💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Have you ever taken a solo over a chord progression with chords that change quickly?
Did you ask yourself: How do I handle the chords moving along so fast? Do I really need to outline their chord tones?
The answer is definitely not.
In this video, I explain how to improvise jazz guitar solos without worrying about quickly changing harmony.
We can do so by using an improvisation technique called prolongation.
I talk about using prolongation over a 1 6 2 5 chord progression, which is very classic in jazz.
Each of those chords take up just two beats, so they change fairly quickly.
There are many ways to improvise using prolongation, so in the video, I provide concrete steps to help you practice it from the ground up.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about how to improvise jazz guitar solos over a 1 6 2 5 chord progression. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

Whoa! Lightbulb moment! I have been playing for years. I have struggled to create solos/improvisations to jazz songs where the chords last for only for one measure and often there may be 2 or 3 chords in a measure. I do not know why I never came across the prolongation concept before. Even with this brief exposure to the idea, I can see my ability to create sols/improvs will be greatly enhanced. Many Thanks. Cheers and Well Done!

Thanks for sharing guitar prolongation techniques targeting the beginning or selected notes of the music phrasing, it's sure makes a difference when applied to chord tones soloing too.

Thanks again. .. I am taking some time away for a few days and to hang out with this lesson along the way. I will bring my nylon electric and mini amp to work on this in my old (refurbishing) 17' Chinook motorhome .. and bringing the acoustic to keep with in the place where a few will be playing gospel and light bluegrass types ... and mostly I follow along .. memorization a things.. and I like this set up lesson .. I wonder if there are any handy apple apps that I dan record a simple loop to work with... ... I have sort of a peddle system not used yet (old but new Roland dual thing). After this trip away I get to get to fun with normal chores, hand therapy (great exercises helping much) and music .. daily is the goal. The root "get it encouragement" .. in this lesson is one of the mail things I want to grasp .. and play in keys too, capo (if I must 😞). Great lessons and thank you though I am a newbie (just above beginner .. in my mind).

Okay, okay, I get the message ....learn where you are and learn the chord tones. But what does that mean? Does that mean learn the arpeggios? Or learn how the chord fits into a pentatonic, or natural minor? Or a major scale? I find it too vague.

  • @ArthurCanal

The notes that make up the chord. Example would be 1 3 5 are the chord tones for a major triad. Those fit into the major scale. Add the 7 in for the maj7. Learning the arpeggios for these chords will definitely help here with your ability to solo over chords and land on those sweet notes to resolve. As the video discusses you can play pretty much anything in between but resolve to one of those tones. Hopefully this helps a bit.
