some strategy: if you hit less than 85km/h don't bother spin serving unless its deadly accurate. Over 85k any small amount of side spin will begin to make a difference and dart left or right as well as down at the last second making it almost impossible to pass. I also say 'deadly' accurate because it is a high risk serve and hitting a top spin ball to the centre of the court is just a gift for the opposition, make sure you can pick the lines. If you do insist on jump serving, i suggest that you practice like crazy, go to the gym early and leave late and when you practice, absolutely WHALE on it, as hard as you can THEN work on accuracy. i know it sounds crazy but if you work on accuracy first then try to add pace your mechanics will break down. video tape yourself from in front, behind, and both sides to pick out any quirks you or your coach may notice and get them corrected at max effort. Given new dimpled balls, floats are much more difficult to pass now. accuracy is not as important when you float because it can dart any which way. also, because it is an easier serve to hit and be accurate more players at the amateur level are developing this serve. As a general tip, if your coach asks you to serve at a position on the court (1,5, or 2) what he/she is really saying is "pick on the player in this position" so whenever you practice be sure to have a targe and work on serving to either side of it.

Thanks this was helpful. My daughter has overhand served since 7 or 8. At 12 she has a 65+%accuracy. She also has a lot of strength, something most girls her age struggle with. (Growing up on a farm w cows and heavy feed bags has helped strength a lot!!). She’s worked on hitting right at the back line and back corners this past year. Having a not so great coach at her small school has caused her to start serving differently than what she has in the past...not for the better! So we’re switching lanes, going to public school, trying out for travel, and have done many clinics starting in feb this year and going through the summer. The best money we spent was on Pat Powers volleyball clinic!!! He got her serve back, fixed her spike approach, and made her skills of setting she seemed to naturally have, shine!!! All within 10hrs/2d of training! Wished I lived in Colorado!!! That man is amazing! I recorded her while this went on so she could see herself and the improvements and to remind her of what he taught. So, I’m glad to know I’m doing that correctly. My husband, when I was asking if she needed to focus on jump serves, said he didn’t think so. He thought that it was the ‘in thing’ to do right now. He said she had so much power that she needed to focus on making sure she could put it right where she wanted it...anywhere on the court...meaning to increase her accuracy. When she was younger and played rec ball, she would win games just bc of the way she could serve. Again ty for your tips. I love watching her play this sport! So much fun!!

float serving tip (If you didn't understand reply and i will try explaining it a bit better) Float Serve Tip : In the float serve she can take a step to make it stronger. For example if you are right handed you right leg must be back originally.... But you begin with it on the front and when you toss the ball on the air you bring your left leg to the front and the serve is much more powerful than it would simply be if it was for the way it told us...

I do a stand float that drops before 10 foot. People think it’s because I specifically maneuver it too, but it’s because I don’t know how to add power to it. I’ve gotten many aces with my weak short floats, but I can’t seem to figure out how to do a strong deep float.

  • @6lack863

Gobogi maneuver you body quicker but also time it well if that doesn’t help then do some exercise focusing your core muscles and arms just to make the impact connect a bit better but I guess the best way is just keep serving until u find ur own way of generating power But I don’t really know too well about float serves I’m just giving general ideas on what I know cause these helped me with my jump serves I’m to sure these would be the most effective with standing float serves but I’m pretty sure they would work somewhat

Your power comes from your elbow. Make sure your elbow is leading your hand, so your hand goes back, elbow comes forward, and you spring your hand back up. Also, make sure to never break your wrist and keep it locked. With practice, you'll get there. I'm still working on it myself.

Treat the serves (float serve, top spin serve)like you are doing a spike when you hit the ball but do your hands like they tell you in this video but RIGHT when you hit it, hit it like as you would a spiked ball. That’s what happened to me when I used to serve these servers it was ridiculously weak but when I added the missing ingredient: SPIKING TYPE OF HIT it improved quick and goes over the net now. Of course don’t add too much power that it goes out of bounds on the opposite court cause you will turn into Superman you’ll have so much power after this lol.......Hope that helps y’all .... sucks that KZread videos don’t tell you this..... bunch of farces lol

Physically I know I'm capable of hitting the ball harder than some of my female friends but I don't know what's lacking in my technique that's causing me not to consistently hit the ball over the net

LoLCollege there are many things that could cause you to not be able to serve as well or as hard. You need to follow through as she said many times. The timing and the ball toss is crucial to a serve too

Sounds weird maybe, but I have the same thing. And it is mentally. I am 27 and playing volleyball for 4 years now. I finally know how to serve upper hand but during a game I suck. During training I nail it. I found out it is in my head. If I say to myself I am gonna hit this hard and over the net. Then there it goes. If I am insecure or don't pay attention I fail.

When she does the jump float she raise the ball with her right hand then hits with her right hand. What is this called? My granddaughter served this way when she broke her left wrist and she aced the ball all the time, then the coach made her go back to throwing the ball up with the left and hit with the right when healed. I heard they teach that in college so they won’t let her do it now in high school. She still aces it a lot that they gave her the nickname of Ace. Should she still practice the serve this way.

Aside from the fact that I’m only 12 and that was my first ever practice. I think I’ve gotten better and am ready to show my skills in my next practice tomorrow. I learned a bit from my brother who played volleyball for years at least. The one thing that I really need to get used to is that I need to do either more of a follow through or I need to shorten my tosses cuz my elbow keeps extending when I serve and it just keeps cracking and annoys me the whole time.
