I like reading children's books with lots of images at first or watching those rare videos stories where you get to see what happens and a text as well along with the audio

This particular video by Olly really hits home for me. Recently, I've decided I want to learn Spanish (I took courses in high school and college many years ago, but only remember bits and pieces). One of the free channels I get with my Roku device is Pluto TV and that channel is currently playing one of my favorite television programs--Star Trek: The Next Generation--in Spanish, with accompanying Spanish captions. Over the years, I've seen most of the episodes so many times I practically have the dialogue memorized, so to hear that dialogue spoken in Spanish, while simultaneously seeing the words written IN Spanish, has truly helped me increase my understanding of spoken Spanish. As I've listened and watched the captions, what was once just a rapid slurry of incomprehensible sounds increasingly is discernable as distinct words and phrases. My goal over the next year is to deliberately study Spanish grammar, idioms, and vocabulary so that I can eventually understand everything I hear while listening to one of my favorite shows in Spanish.

Yes, this is what I need to focus on now with my Japanese: Tons of listening, along with transcripts when possible. Going through your Japanese Conversations course now to hit this practice hard!

I am Brazilian, and when I was at a beginner level in English, I used a technique that helped me a lot with my input skills (reading and listening), which was to read and listen at the same time. During that period, I practiced this approach every single day. I also listened to English KZread videos when I was doing other things, such as cleaning the house or going to university. Some people don't like reading books, but it's my favorite hobby. My tip is to focus on easy materials to train your input skills and to use every free moment to immerse yourself in the language. Okay, thanks for the video and hugs from Brazil.

I was just thinking about it today. I’ve been learning Japanese for some time but I still don’t understand much when I listen to native speakers. I just thought I need to continue listening and learning vocab and grammar and the time will come I can understand things. I’m very relaxed about it now but in the past when I was learning other languages, I used to get frustrated that I couldn’t understand things easily 😊

How is your language learning quest going? Are you still at it? Maybe you've mastered it by now, but Cowboy Bebop is a palatable anime for most people.

I've got a couple of Olly's books. I struggled a bit with the one set in Spain since the vosotros form is totally unfamiliar to me. However, the writing is simple, but with decent adult conversation and enough repetition for a learning to put new knowledge to use.

My biggest issue in language learning is listening omg. 1)listening 2)grammar + conjugating verbs 3)vocabulary Well 2 and 3 is minor because I can read, write, understand and speak Portuguese but the problem is listening, it frustrates me because I have to be patient, this is the last skill that I need to master before becoming fluent. The other 30%-40% in process. And yes vocabulary is the most essential part of language learning.

That's not a bad thing to do, but I think you run the risk of missing a lot of the meaning of the poetry while simultaneously building an unusual vocabulary... it's difficult to explain. I was listening to a song the other day that had a line in it that went like this: "But every silver lining / always seems to have a cloud." If I didn't already know the idiom "Every cloud has a silver lining" I wouldn't be able to understand what this means - that every good thing that happened in the singer's life came with some sort of problem. Poetry is really hard to understand as a second-language speaker, precisely because it likes to use the difference between the ordinary way of saying things, and the poetic way, to emphasize something or create a particular effect. That being said, I've learned a lot of phrases and combinations of words by translating poetry, and it's helping me to get a better understanding of grammatical-case-markers.

What is your opinion of passive listening? Repetitive listening? Where you just listen to something repeatedly while walking, doing the dishes, etc. without necessarily paying attention to it. Not as a replacement for more active listening, but as a supplement. Curious as to your view on this.

Essentially a waste of time in terms of learning. However, like anything, if you do it for long enough it will contribute.

Fyi, passively listening to something that you actively studied is very effective. Also certain activities like walking would allow for more focusing than say doing the dishes.

One language in particular that I want to learn but I also don’t want to learn is Spanish because my grandfather is a Spanish professor and is super fluent and my brother is fluent living in Argentina and one of my uncles married a Latina so I have cousins that are Latino. I have lots of good reasons to learn Spanish but I’ve also had some bad experiences with Latinos growing up and Spanish doesn’t really inspire me unless it’s like Antonio Banderas or Juanes. Like I know a lot of the basics in Spanish and I probably could speak if I could somehow shift my perspective a little bit but they speak so fast! Like I’m already bilingual but people don’t speak is crazy fast in my second language except for this one lady I met. But most of the people that I’ve talked to in my second language speak at what I consider a normal pace but a lot of Latinos I’ve heard speak talk like they’ve had too much caffeine or sugar and they’re going like 50% faster than is reasonable in my opinion. I definitely need to do the story learning and use some of your resources to really get this down. I want to connect with Latinos but for some reason it’s harder than it is with other people for me

I just had a look at your Spanish course. It seems very interesting indeed! How would you compare it to Assimil courses? I know that you've put a lot of work and passion into preparing it, but it is at least 3 times as expensive as Assimil. Don't take me the wrong way, I love your work :D I just think it's quite pricey, but what do I know, I am from Poland where labour is cheap and wages are low :P I would be interested in Brazilian Portuguese course though!!

Well it’s a totally different concept to Assimil. (Or anything else!) As for price, yes it’s certainly more expensive. I’d only recommend you enrol if the story-based methodology is right for you.
