How to improve and increase the glide phase of your inline skating stride by pausing after the push

Спорт

In this video I show you an advanced intermediate level exercise where after the glide phase I initiate a pause before taking the next stride. This slow-motion skating exercise will help develop your ability to glide and tell you if your edge is upright enough to allow gliding - for many skaters an inside edge pronation will hinder this gliding ability.

    @@mayallgowellwithme I started skating daily this week, first 8 km, then 15 now 20. All to prepare my legs before I start training ice hockey, thought I'd only do it until the season starts, but I just enjoy rollerblades so much, muscles all hard always, only takes up about an hour and combines not just a leg and core workout but also cardio. Feels as if I were commuting on a bicycle again, which I won't ever do. I definitely won't stop inline skating after starting hockey. When I come back to the gym, I'll definitely spend much less time there, which I do find very boring. I'm 22 but my mom's nearing 50, I'll try getting her into skating too. It's just great for your whole body unlike running. Maybe my father would try too.

    Hello Asha I have just started inline skating and thanks to you I know how to skate but the problem is that I cannot skate comfortably on asphalt road it’s like I cannot glide on it well ,do u have any suggestions regarding this and one more small thing how do I skate uphills more efficiently?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Rough surfaces are challenging for sure and they make gliding less secure for sure. On rougher surfaces you need to change how you skate and reduce the gliding and have a higher cadence (stride tempo), more strides per minute. This is more tiring but will generate more speed which is the crucial factor over rough surfaces. The rougher the surface the more open toe V shape you'll need to create. Also, choose your rough surfaces so that you don't try learning rough surface technique on the roughest stuff. Remember speed is the best help over rough ground so for new skaters this is the hardest challenge. Sometimes staying on smooth surfaces for longer until your base skills are fluent and your average speeds are higher. Uphills is the exact same technique as rough surfaces. No gliding, higher cadence but more open V shape in the feet for uphills than flat.

    Hi Asha, what is better to visualize with the pushing leg : all the wheels on the pushing leg push at the same time evenly, or front wheels push more? Where is that pushing area on the skate pls?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. All the wheels will push together, you will achieve this focusing on the ball of the foot (around the second wheel in a 4-wheeled skate). It's never the front wheels, although lots of people who learn by themselves do it that way it's actually not efficient. If you're a beginner go focus on the ball of the foot, and that will give you even force in all wheels. Later on, in advanced stages, you will start to "carve" and you will find out the heel gives you extra power, but don't worry about that for now.

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The skates for a beginner should be comfortable, have a good ankle support, and a heel brake. Focus on those 3 points. Besides, 80mm wheels or less provide more control than big wheels. Fitness skates are usually enough for a beginner and they are very friendly in terms of comfort. Later you can upgrade to a more robust skate according to your needs. If you need further information about how to choose skates please have a look at this skatefresh.com/product/ebook/ If you are interested in inlines there is a short guide here skatefresh.com/buy-skates-skate-equipment/ however those skates may be more suitable for intermediate skaters. You can buy a model like those adding a heel brake, sold separately. The heel brake is important for beginners.

    Hi, i have a question about my toes going numb when inline skating. I have tried not tightening the lacing too much but it didn't help. How could i relieve the pressure on top of my foot and toes, so they don't go numb?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The way you described it makes me think the skates you are riding are too small for you. Maybe the size is right, but not the shape. Some brands/models are narrow/wider even in the toe box area, and sometimes we really need to choose a different model because our foot shape doesn't match. That's why it's so important to try skates out in a skate shop. I have one foot a little wider than the other and the little toe gets numb frequently in certain models I ride. When an area gets numb is definitely due to a nerve under pressure. Fitness skates tend to adapt to your feet after a while, but if you are riding a freeskate type the plastic will never change, it stays like that forever and sometimes changing the liner helps but not always. I suggest that you take a look at this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/gn11p8edpMe6odY.html where Asha talked about pain that appears on top of the foot because of not enough knee flexion. However, I really think your problem is actually the skate being too narrow and/or small. Toes should actually be free inside the boot, never squashed together.

    Hi Asha, i state that i am a very beginner with rollers and contrary to many who are pronators i have the opposite problem, my rollers, specially the right one, tend to be supinators even when i am standing. For me it is difficult to understand why.

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. First, make sure your skates are tide up correctly, because loose skates are one of the reasons ankles rock in or out. Then, you must practice the exercise that appears in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIF7yaeJZM6rkZM.html That exercise is to solve pronation and also works for supination. The point is to focus on the center edge controlling the tilt using the knee. Do the exercise for a couple of minutes at the beginning of your session every time you skate, until one day you realize the supination is gone.

    Hello. If you have a lesson for a beginner, how to properly and beautifully 🙂turn when moving to a left or right (transferring weight to the left or right leg) I will be grateful for the link. Sorry for my English:)

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Absolute beginners keep their weight in the middle so they can't barely transfer weight to one leg in order to turn. That's why the proper and beautiful way for an absolute beginner is to use the A-frame turn. It's an easy turn with both legs wide open and all wheels on the floor. Beginners who already have some time on wheels can use the parallel turn, as long as they have already mastered the scissors position, because the parallel turn is based on it. Both these turns are explained in the online course for beginners by Asha skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-beginner-level-full-course/

For skating I now use a Garmin sports watch with GPS capability and have found it more realistic from a perspective of average and top speeds. There is also a skating specific app available for the Garmin watches.

    I think I tend to get lazy with this drill, I always find myself toe rolling my back skate

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    We’ll that’s ok, it’s one of the easier progressions to roll the back toe or then tap it for a moment. This then enables you to push, glide and pause all on one skate. I suspect if you are very often rolling the back toe when drilling in this slow motion, it might be because you’re not quite balanced enough for that long one footed glide. I can’t say without seeing you skate but check that out with yourself. 👍🏽
