John is an incredibly level headed dude considering who his core audiophile consumer is. Even for the cost of the tables he makes, he understands that you don't need a $10k system to get started and get great sound. Great video!

Great video, very educational learnt more than I ever knew before about the turntable. BTW still using my 1984 purchased Technics table and amp and it's still doing fine at least for my ears. One of key pieces of advice from the video is that the sound is very much personal to each individual so if it sounds good to you and gives you pleasure from the music then that's good enough. Love the videos this is one of the best channels on KZread.

Great video, advice, and beard! I agree with John. Have to keep it simple and enjoy the music. After over 20 years in the hobby, I finally discovered that conical styli can be very good. I agree with John. When playing records in the VG range, the conical stylus does not pick up as many imperfections in the record leading to a more enjoyable listening experience. Based on John’s advice, I will look into an isolation platform. Thank you!

With cartridge recommendations I think genre is important as well. What sounds very accurate and pleasing for soft live piano jazz may not be good for older rock records and it goes both ways.

Nice vid with John answering all of your questions. I’ve recently gone with 1-inch diameter Sorbothane discs which are sticky and purple placed under the feet of my turntable. I trim a circular piece thin cardboard and place it at the bottom of each disc. Bought a package of 8 (I use two TTs) via Amazon. There are High Output Moving Coil cartridges that use the MM phono stage so you don’t have to buy an MC phono stage or Step-Up Transformer (SUT). Nice to see you are local here in the Los Angeles area.👍👍

I like his sensible and down to earth answers. I've learned just this year that what he says in the video is exactly what I've had to do myself on the $350 turntable I've been using. I'm getting ready to upgrade but not to a five figure turntable haha. Stopping the vibrations coming from the speakers (and the turntable, receiver, and speakers are all sitting on furniture that is on my wood floors in the pier and beam section of my house) was a little more difficult than buying the variety of insulating/shock resistant feet for the subwoofers and turntable. But once I was able to fix that issue it cleared up a lot. I'm going to continue on and do a little bit more and see if I noticed more clarity that I may not realize I'm missing out on right now. That was an interesting point he made. Thanks for the interview and video! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

I’m still using a 51 yr old Thorens TD-165 - my dad bought it in the year I was born. I’ve made sure it is serviced, on a stable base, and is set up properly. It could do with a new cartridge now - my old Shure is getting on now. But, I love it, and I won’t part with it.

Interesting video. I use an AT 140 TT, with a Denon DL103r, Mogami interconnects, updated mat, and Lehmann Decade phono preamp. I love listening to music and I find it useless spending money for a macho looking TT.

I would say the only thing I disagree with is the stylus shape, to a certain extent. Generally nude ellipticals and micro lines are far more forgiving on poorly pressed albums. Of course there are many great inexpensive bonded elliptical and conical styli out there, however some are not particularly great at handling inner groove distortion and sibilance. Shibatas are kind of unnecessary now as they were a precise stylus developed for quad decoders in the 1970's. The Audio Technica AT-VM95ML is an excellent budget micro line and a nice upgrade to the already excellent AT-VM95e.

As a music lover and hifi enthusiast, I appreciate the recent videos on system improvements. It’s usually perceived as niche, “nerdy”, or prohibitively expensive (regardless of budget), but can have a profound impact on overall musical enjoyment/appreciation. Quality playback for anyone who truly values music on a regular basis should never be ignored or dismissed.

A good stylus will improve on a bad cartridge but a good cartridge will not improve on a bad stylus. Prioritizes stylus before cartridge.
