I just got a queen and it's summer but I want to plan ahead, my basement doesn't get cold enough to hibernate a colony and none of my house is, I don't trust the fridge so what's the easiest way I can safely hibernate my ants when the time comes? Also, what's the most effective way to heat my ants? My house always runs on air conditioner which makes giving the ants a proper environment impossible and I want to give the ants an area where they can be in a controlled temperature environment but I can't find enough information and I don't have a room I can set aside. Will putting the test tube in an empty fish tank with a reptile heater work?

I have a question. I’m new in the hobby, although I tried getting started last summer. Unfortunately, all my queens died. This year, I have a Camponotus ligniperdus queen, and since I’m really fond of that species, I hope to be able to start a fine colony with her. But she ate the small batch of eggs she has laid, so did the one I caught last year, and that one died soon after. Now I know that camponotus ants lay in batches, and take breaks of sometimes a few months. But since it’s the beginning of September now, can I really hypernate her without any brood, and she will survive and start laying again after hypernation?

It is not necessary to put them in a refrigerator ☝️ It gets really cold at night here. I just leave them in room temperature in winter. When day hits. They go out to drink water, carry seeds, and eat chopped up mealworms. They prefer the heated areas in their nest farm setup 😤 And yes. It is November. And they really still eating and drinking. And they choose to stay by the heating cable locations 😎

Jennifer Rubel Hey! Congrats on the catch! Your Winter is exactly the same as mine. December - March. Therefore you should slowly start to hibernate your ants around the end of October to the end of March at a temperature of 5 - 8 degrees Celsius. Unfathomable Reasons fuck off. What are you from ...The People for the Ethical Treatment of Insects. Keeping ants is no different than keeping a dog or a cat or a hamster. Test tube setups simulate the natural place that a queen ant starts her colony in the wild. With you logic of KeEPiNg aNyThINg IN a PlAStiC BoX tHaT WasN’T mEAnt tO LiVE iN a PlAStiC Box Is TorTure means that we should get ride of our cats and dogs because ThEy aRE NoT MeANt tO Be iN a HouSE because they don’t live in a house in the wild. You don’t have problems with people keeping fish even though fish don’t live in fucking plastic bins in the ocean. Also people don’t keep ants to play god they keep ants to learn about nature and you end up figuring out how similar ants are to humans. Bottom line shut up and if you have never kept ants you should not be commenting stuff like this.
