You are very wise to be getting yourself equipped and prepared!! My husband of 41 years passed away - which was extremely hard! But I could tell that I didn't want to stay alone. So I listened to alot of Mats videos before I started dating again. It was so tremendously helpful!!

Being vulnerable is something that couples should not be afraid of… learning to vulnerable in a relationship actually can work to your advantage… it can make your relationship stronger, healthier, and your bond firmer with your partner - it really works wonders! Anyway, that’s my two cents.

I’ll never forget my old pastor (unfortunately, he’s now deceased) telling us not to be “fix it” spouses when our husband/wife tells us something that happened. Basically just validate their feelings - “lead with compassion” as said here. It has been great advice in my relationships - son, fiancé, mother, etc. Some of the best advice I’ve ever received as a “fix it” personality.

    1. Open up first. Can I be vulnerable with you? 2. Lead with compassion. Offer compassion instead of judgement. 3. Pick a private place. On a walk for example. 4. Shoulder up. Sit 90* angle or side by side. 5. Talk over an activity. Fishing, going for a walk, drive etc.

I want to thank you so much! I could NOT figure out what I've been doing wrong. I'm a business owner, I take care of my apartment, I maintain my car, I carry my luggage. And that was my issue. I was so into masculine energy as a Computer Engineer I lost touch with my feminine. Now I'm better at nurture, nature, and heart. I'm at the beginning of a great relationship where I feel like I AM a delicate flower instead of the flower pot.

Matt. Listening to your cabin story brings tears to my eyes. The amount of respect you have for your woman is incredible. Being able to respect when a woman is ready and when she is vulnerable is huge. This story from when you were dating 6 months in has made me realize that my boyfriend may not respect me on the level I need.

    1. open up first, so he knows that he doesnt have to keep up the perfect public image with you 2. be understanding and empathic when he opens up, so he knows that he wont be ridiculed and judged 3. be in a private safe place, so that your important and deep conversations dont get interrupted by or eavesdropped by others 4. be at a shoulder to shoulder position, our personal bubble is wider to the front and back, but shorter when its on our sides, so its easier to get closer and personal to people that way 5. talk while doing something together, so that the mind and heart dont get too stressed and overwhelmed with the deep conversation

Mat, I started watching your videos 2 years ago when I was single and actively NOT looking for a relationship. I didn’t feel it was fair to try an enter something not feeling like a “whole” person, so figured it was a low stakes time to research. Well my mindset shifted around a few things (which happens as we learn more), and less than 6 months in, I accidentally found the best man I’ve ever met. In a pandemic, no less! Now we are about to celebrate a year together, and we seem to just keep getting stronger. Thanks for doing what you do…and for HOW you do it. 🙏🏾😻🙌🏾

Thanks for this Mat. I think it’s really useful. My partner and I have been together for almost two years but for most parts our relationship has been long distance. He is a very reserved man due to his upbringing and life experiences but he told me that he has never been open about himself to any other person as he has been with me. What I usually do when I want him to open up is to first tell him that I am there for him always and that I want to know, understand and learn everything about him. I also tell him that although I am curious to know all that’s going on, he can take his time and tell me when he is ready. He told me he loves and appreciates my approach and patience with him as it makes him feel comfortable about opening up. I notice that he has become more open and more at ease about being vulnerable and it makes me happy to know that he trusts me with his heart and emotions.

TY Mat for this advice. I'm so devastated & heartbroken right now. The love of my life pulled away & ghosted me for a little while after I told Him that I love Him. Then, I reached out to Him & asked where I stood & He told me I'm the one person He never wants to hurt. He's emotionally unavailable so I let Him go heal or to find someone who He really wants.

Omg this changed my life, literally just understood how to communicate properly and with love and I did not know how before and I was always defensive and confrontational and I want you to know this video has opened my eyes and actually sank in and now I get it. It may sound crazy I didn't have the tools that I needed to properly work on life and that was working on it with the wrong set of tools and that's why I was failing at compassionate communication. I am so thankful to God that I found this video because before this video I really didn't get it. You have to put yourself in the other person's shoes and look at it from their perspective and I honestly have never done that before in my life and I am 34. I know everyone hears this and may or may not get it but the moment you do actually get it it feels like a spiritual enlightenment and a rebirth. I'm alive and I'm on fire and I'm so glad I found this video because it will help every aspect of my life with how I communicate with everyone.

I'm trying to get me and my sister to do #5. I want us to build our late mother's collage together so we can talk about our bringing up, what we've learned from each other etc....I want to do this because we now stay together and our kids at our mother's house and this is the first time since I left home when I was 18yrs I'm now 38yrs and I've only saw her during visitations....the reason I want us to talk its because I can see we avoid getting on each other's toes, we avoid talking about us instead we find ourselves talking about other people. I find our relationship to be not as healthy as it should be...

Matt, I love this. Curious, in step 4: shoulder up, how do you do this in a long distance relationship? You can’t always wait to have important conversations when your together, so how do you create that on FaceTime, where you are literally facing each other and don’t have the benefit of touch, or being side by side?

Love the "shoulder up" and the "campfire experience"! It's a pity that videocalls (for people at long distance, like me) are face to face and not side by side! I've opened up by letters and I'm encouraging him to do the same, patiently. It's amazing how to love another person comes from a place of compassion and self-love. Compassion is particularly important for men who had bad or toxic experiences in past relationships, and yet are doing the inner work to be in a healthy relationship at some point. Self-love is the foundation for letting things flow, to allow time for the other person to respond, in his own rhythm. It's a dance, and a beautiful one. Thank you so much for sharing your love life with us and your valuable insights! Love from Brazil! 💖☀️🌸

Hi Mat, I absolutely love your no nonsense, straight to the point videos and they have been a huge help to me. I have a question for you and maybe others can join in here as i would be interested in everyones advice. Q: Who should say 'I love you' first? Ive been with my guy 10 months now- All going well, but I feel he is not letting me in emotionally which keeps me firmly on the outside. He may not love me at all of course, but I know he cares for me deeply. It would be good to know as it helps me know if I am on the right track. Is that reasonable thinking or am I barking up the wrong tree with this one?! Many thanks everyone. I love reading the comments! x
