Hyper focus. Yes. My child finds NOTHING and I mean NOTHING near as interesting as a video game, favorite KZread channel or superhero movie. Nothing. Not a book, no matter if it’s ABOUT video games, superheroes or if his fav KZreadr wrote it. I’ve tried it all. I Do Love setting a timer and working for set time intervals/bursts. I will definitely be using this for this upcoming school year.

We CANNOT do video games. We can't. It is a can of worms each and every time he's exposed to it. It's like a drug, and frankly, legos can get that way too. It's a struggle, and you're not alone!

@@TheParentTeacherBridge I definitely tell friends with younger kids to AVOID all games. Maybe Angry birds is ok, but that’s it. The gateway is Roblox and watching kids open toys on KZread. Stop them at Angry Birds. Don’t even do. Temple run!!

@@scharf74 I've tried to direct more attention to reading books and encourage a love of reading there. Bedtime we leave the lights on for 30 minutes so they have time to read. It's taken a while, but now he actually is excited (providing I have actual interesting books). You can look back throughout my Instagram to see posts on what we've read periodically. It started with me reading a book WITH him...and gradually it transitioned to him reading it to me some...and finally on his own. We end with a movie night on it. :)

Rebecca, I have a question. Am I wrong to be upset and extremely frustrated because I feel that ADHD kids over a certain age, in my case 10yrs old, are, at the end of the day, making choices? They’re choosing to play Minecraft. They’re choosing not to read a book. They’re choosing to watch Black Widow for 2hrs straight. They’re choosing not to sit for 3 minutes doing math homework. I feel like I’m negotiating with terrorists.

Nikki, I think it's normal to be frustrated in that situation. ADHD children are often immature (sometimes by about 3 years). Keeping a clean room is something that is. a struggle as is getting dressed, brushing teeth, etc. Look up "executive functioning." For us, it's best to severely limit screen time. Each time I get too free with that, I can tell in his behavior. I try to have alternative things out to do. That doesn't mean I don't get asked. Some parents form routines after a school day that certain things must be done before screen time is earned. Additude Mag may have some more info on that in depth.
