How to Help Fallen Baby Birds

We're currently having a blizzard in mid-April, so to take my mind off things I'm posting this video from our recent trip to Florida where we came across a young owl that had fallen from its nest. Watch to learn how you can help fallen baby birds!
And yes, I know this is a reptile channel. Consider this a "bonus" video for this week, and then it's back to reptiles on Tuesday! Because we reptile people love and appreciate ALL wildlife, right??

Been binging your channel over the last week, and I saw this video a couple of days ago. I USED IT TODAY! There was a baby bird that fell from its tree and wandered onto the pavement near my door so I did what you did in the video. Mum a bird watched us the whole time and brought the baby some food once we put it back in the tree.

I actually had to do that with a baby cardinal. It was laying in the middle of the road, so I scooped it up real quick and gave it to one of my friends instructing her to put it in a safe area. I couldn’t do it, because I had my dog, who is known for eating baby birds. When I came back without my dog, she told me she put it in a bucket. I had her bring it back and just place it in the grass away from the road. We sat close to the road and watched it. It was hopping around chirping (that’s how I knew it was a cardinal) for its parents. A couple minutes later the father came down and inspected it. After a while the mom came. We ended up leaving it alone, and were happy because we had just saved a birds life.

It is also important to note that some time on the ground is a natural part of the life cycle for many birds too, there is a short period between losing baby feathers and fully fledging whete they can hover a bit, glide, and fly short distances, but they spend most of their time on the ground. Pointing out the lack of tail feathers is a sign that this little owl simply fell too far from his perch. Elevating him is definitely the safest thing to do, but the parents continue to guard and feed babies who have fallen. Recently it has been discovered that a lack of tail feathers is NOT in fact a hinderance for birds while climbing! A study showed that young quail who were flightless yet beginning to fledge, could use their underdevelooed wings to propel them upwards as they climbed completely vertical surfaces, easily shooting 20ft up and to a safer perch. The best advice possible is one, to control your pets to prevent them from predating upon wildlife, and two, to leave wildlifr alone unless it appears to be in obvious distress.

Kat Mann in an ideal world that would be how things work. Sadly many people do not know how to control they're dogs well enough and others simply don't care. If a dog owner feels nothing when they're dog attacks yours, even though yours is on a lead and is under control. They have even less conscience about their dog killing a baby bird. My dog got attacked last week. Luckily it was minor. The owner simply swore at me when l asked him what he was doing and grabbed the dog and dragged it off. I don't blame the dog. Humans are the problem.

Kat Mann that’s fascinating! I’ve done some bird rescue before- some were injured, one strange young robin was not obviously injured but refused to fly and would only sit still, soaking in a puddle- she didn’t make it, and I still have no idea what was wrong with her- and an adorable case of two robins who were far too young to fly. I assume their nest fell. I saved them from the ill informed neighbor children and made a makeshift nest out of rags, bungee cords, and a large plastic pot, which I put in a tree. One still managed to fall and got eaten by my cat- survival of the fittest, I guess- and the other I watched as it grew up and flew away. Mama Robin was very attentive through the whole ordeal:)

Yes but also, every bird is different, that study about the quail most likely won't be the same for this little owl. So this is good advice for certain birds.

@@sallywaites8517 I'm not sure how that's really relevant, but either way dogs aren't the only animals that can prey on baby birds. There's cats, coyotes, lizards, foxes, larger birds, etc. Most of those are not pets and can go after a grounded bird even if your own dog is well trained.

When walking to school one day, I found a hummingbird on the ground. He was extremely young, going by his size and coloring, and as he wiggled around, I noticed that he was missing over half of a wing. I was worried he would be attacked by a larger predator, so I took him to the local Bird Emporium, hoping that they knew what to do. I couldn't stay with him, so I left my number in case anything changed. They confirmed that he was an extremely young adult, barely out of the juvenile stage, sexed him, and found a hummingbird rescue-rehabilitation center for him. Turns out that hatching with only one complete wing is a fairly common genetic disability in hummingbirds, and most die because they can't fly to escape predators or to eat. Luckily for my boy, he found a new home, and is being trained to work as an animal ambassador now. TL;DR-- As long as you're gentle, and get information from experts, you really can save young birds like this, big or small. :)

Excellent advice. We had some Eastern Phoebes nest near our front door several years ago and I knew my Jack Russell would kill them if he caught them. So every time I was going to potty him I checked outside first. Finally the day came where the two hatchlings were on the ground. The first flew up to my rooftop when I went to move it, but the second wasn’t nearly as able to fly. So I moved it further down the yard, well past where my dog’s leash reaches, to some thick shrubs near a bird bath, the parents watching me closely the whole time. I sat down a distance away and watched the parents go check on the hatchling once they felt it was safe to. Birds are very devoted parents.

I found a young swallow with my friends we picked it up ( I picked him up my friends helped ) and he pirched on my finger and it was adorable. He was very tired and had possibly broke his tail wing. So we kept him in a shoe box in my utilitie where he was able could fly off. He jumped out of the box a couple of times before he actually flew away. We called him swill and made a shrine for him with a Pokémon card of a swallow pokemon.

I am so happy i got here so early! I need some advice on what to do about a duck nest with eggs in it in my backyard. I live on a lake and some ducks have decided to put a nest right in my backyard. The female has already laid her eggs. I walked out to the backyard and i saw a Mallard flying away from a bush. I went to investigate and saw a nest with eggs. I did NOT touch it. Doesn't touching a nest or disturbing it cause the parents to abandon it? How would i deal with this so that they will have the best chance possible to hatch the eggs? I have a dog that runs around the yard and i cant have him disturbing the nest. But putting up a man-made barrier around it would disturb the ducks right? Could someone advise me soon? BTW this all happened just 20 minutes ago so i dont think much has changed

Wild Gaming birds abandoning their nest if a human touches it is a myth, so you should be fine.

Wild Gaming I've seen a museum put a barrier around a ground bird's nest that was next to one of their statues. The bird was fine with it and no one touched it. Putting a small fence up so your dog can't get to it should be fine. Birds don't actually abandon their babies if you touch them or their eggs.

Ducks might abandon the nest if you mess with it too much. It's not about scent its more just effort and risk/reward. If the ducks feel threatened they might abandon the nest and move on. You should check local and federal laws regarding nests and eggs. In the USA it is illegal to mess with a duck's nests. The best advice I could give you right now would be to keep your dog away and call a professional if you need to keep your pet in the yard. If the lake you live by has a wildlife sanctuary or educational facility they will be able to advise you better then I can. They probably get your situation all the time. This site might be helpful: dfwwildlife.org/resources/fs_co2_ducks.pdf www.dfwwildlife.org/duck.html

Block the dogs ability to reach the nest and if it is impossible to divide the area between your dogs yard and the nest make certain it is safe from the dog and call the rehabbers in your area to get advice. Do not touch the nest due to disturbing nests being illegal not because they will abandon it. If you can just section off a place where the dog can not get to then everything should be fine.

My cousin just rescued an adult off of a road 2 nights ago. It was a bit stunned but didn't have any broken bones luckily. She got it to a rehabber who thinks it can be released in a week or two after some observation and a few good meals. People pick up babies all the time. I know they always believe they are helping but so often they intervene when it isn't necessary. The one that bothers me the most is when people take bunnies out of the nest. It's almost always a death sentence 😢. Thank you for help this owl and for taking the chance to try and spread valuable information ❤.

Niels Hazeborg Nope, they aren't reptiles. They don't have scales, they have warm blood and they care for their young. They evolved out of reptiles, but they're part of the group anymore.

A couple years ago I found a robin nest and spent awhile regularly checking on it and filming the babies, and researching robins to understand what I was seeing/hearing. (Apparently the robin parents have three alarm calls - they used the "low threat ground predator" call for me, "high threat ground predator" when a cat came by, and though I never heard them produce it, they also have a call for flying predators.) Robin chicks actually have a stage of development where they're supposed to be wandering around on the ground, with their parents guarding and feeding them.

Last year my mom found a baby bird (like barely had feathers baby) in the parking lot of her work. She couldn’t find the nest, so she brought him home since I have experience raising baby birds. We also got advice from the local wild life rescue. We fed him and watched over him and after a few weeks he was flying and ready to be released. It was awesome watching all his feathers come in and see him get more confident in flying.

We rescued a Red-tailed hawk who had been shot in the wing by some hunters near our property. We called our local rehabilitation facility and they instructed us on how to safely capture her. We took her there and a few months later they called us and told us to release her where we found her. 3 years later and she still lives by our house, has had a few clutches and has a mate. We named her Artimis.

I know this video is 2 years old, but owls are my favorite animal! I’ve studied them for over 3 years now, and it’s been so much fun. I’ve met an elf owl before and got to hold it once when I went on a vacation trip to Peru, but I’ve never had one of my own because it’s not legal where I live. I can’t even imagine how amazing it would feel to have an owl as my very own pet. I’d give it all the care and love it needs.

Encountered the same kind of baby Owl when I was a kid and my family was camping on a family friend's private property. Our dogs would roam free and they found the Owl. We moved the Owl just out of the dogs' reach on the other side of a fence and the momma was nearby the whole time :) It was so magical and the memory of holding a baby Owl will be with me forever!

People think animals are so “stupid” and just want to “harm” any chance they get, this shows mom understood her baby needed help & was allowing for the help to take place. You can’t really fake this kind of stuff! Animals are honestly so smart I wish more people did their research. Anyway, thanks for the videos!

I worked at a summer camp last summer, and I had an "office" in an outdoor wooden structure. While I was working there, a sparrow moved in and had babies. The babies fell out of the nest a couple times before they even had any flight feathers, so I got an egg carton, filled it with leaf litter, and put it in the rafters next to the edge of the nest so that the babies didn't fall out anymore. I got to watch the baby sparrows grow up. It was adorable.
