How to Groom a Parrot (meet my macaw!)

Many of you have requested to meet my Blue & Gold macaw, Cheyenne, so here you go! Her introduction is followed by a not-so-realistic guide to grooming parrots. Watch to see what I mean ;)

@@butterbun7033 my grandparents had a bird. It was not a parrot. I can't remember what species he was but I can remember his name. His name was Kiki. Kiki was a lovely bird and had a strong bond with my grandfather. After my grandfather sadly (and finally - he had so much pain and didn't look like him anymore) died due to cancer 15 years ago, Kiki became very depressed and aggressive. He started to attack my grandmother around 5 months after my grandfather passed away. My family decided to buy him a girlfriend. It was a terrible idea. Her name was Koko, and she copied Kiki's behaviour and the end of the story was that my grandmother sold both birds cause they attacked everyone and destroyed everything.

@@frederic5974 that happens a lot...usually a lot of birds are stuck in sanctuaries and shelters because they're just so heartbroken over the loss of their owner and best buddy! People see pet birds being "not as good as dogs or cats" but I would bet they're just as loyal in the end.

Snake Discovery I too have a blue and gold macaw. We bought her from a man that kept her in these small cages and quite literally hosed her down leaving her traumatized and unwilling to bond to men. Originally she formed a strong bond with my mom but I'm making good progress with picking her up and feeding her treats on my lap (even though she's really bitey). I want to learn how to bond better with her, she bites but I consider her family and would like tips on how to show her more love if you could provide it.

She's such a sweet girl! I used to have cockatiels, and occasionally I'd petsit my neighbors African Grey, Goffin Cockatoo, and Amazon Parrot. The African Grey would yell, "Ouch!" right before she lunged to bite and then she'd giggle. As much as I didn't trust her, she was an amazingly smart creature.

Not always. They are extremely smart so they'll figure out that you figured them out and change their behavior to confuse you and get what they want. They also tend to learn to go about it so sneakily that you don't figure out that they know that you know, which puts the parrot in the top spot. Which is also why African Greys are often abused; people can't fathom or understand how smart they are thus enabling it to get away with anything it wants, which is often whatever gets the most reaction out of the person such as biting and screaming. Even my own Greys regularly keep surprising me with how smart they are while I am an expert on parrot behavior and have known them for over 15 years! (Edit: typo)

ForestofTooMuchFood Lmao first of all, who said I was getting a parrot for the sole purpose of making it my ring bearer?! I only said that I wanted to have one as my ring bearer. I'm sure there's plenty of organizations or parrot owners with trained parrots that would let me borrow one. Plus, how do you know that I wasn't getting a parrot anyway? Maybe Ive always wanted a parrot and was planning to get one anyway. Not just for a wedding. But even if I for whatever reason did want to go through the hassle of buying a $1,000 parrot then bonding and training it to hold and hand me things on command just for a wedding, as long as I do my research and provide with a good life,it doesn't matter. It's still being given a good life just like any other animal owned by a good pet owner.

She is absolutely gorgeous & can very easily tell she’s happy, loved & well taken care of!!! This is 1 of the things I ABSOLUTELY LOVE about this channel the love, care & pure joy of having all of them in your guys care!!! Also that a lot of breeders care more about mating, raising & selling them off as quickly as possible & sometimes to the detriment to the animals & YOU GUYS NEVER DO THIS!!! That just shows us (among many others) just how much you guys care about ALL the animals in your care!!! Never forget everyone, always keep love in your heart & be safe!!!

I LOVE VIDEOS OF CHEYENNE!!!!! MORE PLEASE!!!! I remember working with the exotics vet....we had a blue and gold macaw come in for a nail and beak trim. The owner left the room cause the bird was so against either. So I was the lucky one to towel the bird, sit in a chair with the birds back agaisnt my chest, holding the head secure with my leather gloves hand while the vet did the pedicure and beak. It's amazing how strong these birds are! And yes let a pro do it esp if you don't know what your doing. I have rarely seen birds like Cheyenne...usually they will fight beak and nail during this! She loves you so much!!!! And the trust is just super!!!💖🦜

I have some tips for you to get rid of the bad habit of plucking. Whenever you see her plucking her feathers giver her one of her toys to play with, so instead of plucking her feathers she will play with her toy for entertainment. Also, try to make sure she is occupied doing something not just sitting there because that will cause her to start playing with her feathers.

Sadly many parrots pluck no matter how many toys they have, or nutritious their diet is, how much socialization they have etc. The trauma never fully leaves them.

I have a blue and gold named Ollie. She's approximately 30 years old and I am at least her 3rd owner that we know of. Her previous owner passed away and she plucked her body feathers, like your Cheyenne. She now has separation anxiety. Ollie loves car rides, hates the vet and the dremel but lets me use a metal nail file lol. Thank you for sharing this, I really enjoyed it.

Is it possible for a parrot to break the plucking habit, if, for example, they have enough toys and other forms of stimulation?

  • @marissa8052

Yes, uncommon but not impossible. It’s kind of like self harm and it becomes such a comforting habit

It’s taken a couple of years but my rescue Blue and Gold has slowly broken out of her habit of plucking. We went through a bunch of toys before we found out that (of all things) a clean, unused, cotton mop makes a great distractor for her. We put sections of the mop around her cage and on top, that way she always some to chew on. She still plucks every once and a while but she’ll stop and go after the mop instead of her own feathers. So it is possible, it just takes a while.

There are tonnes of variables. Some parrots stop plucking but it too late, their follicles are damaged beyond repair.
