I am also in Texas, 8b. As I watched this video I realized that I already own a couple of the plants you have in your run. I have tons of blue salvia in my front garden, and my vitex tree plants hundreds of seedlings every year. I really love the idea of putting plants in the run, and I think I'll plant a grapevine on the west side next spring. Thanks.

I live in 7B. I’ve been doing a complete overhaul of my chicken coop this last while and one thing I thought of doing was planting blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries on the sides of their fence so they sprawl out and climb the coop. Free snacks when they’re inside and hopefully it’ll look nice.

Congrats on your chicken run plants. You’ve encouraged me to give it a try…again. My tiny flock of 4 girls will decimate a yard like a Roman legion. I have 4 cast iron plants hanging on for dear life. My girls use them for shade. Every vine and every single blade of grass has been eaten down to the soil. Hens are as bad as goats. I took grass clipping from mowing the lawn and dumped that in the run and the girls ate that too. Chicken feed, table scraps (watermelon, sweet potatoes, etc.) they, grass, etc. they eat it ALL.

Yea you’re right! And I don’t love the look of tons of plants in cages BUT I’ve been able to slowly remove the cages so now the chickens can eat bugs, dig underneath, enjoy shade, etc. And as a bonus the plants don’t need babying anymore! I’m happy to help! ✌🏻❤️🐓theMama@realsimplemama.com

I do what you do. I keep rocks and bricks near the ones I want to keep. In the yard I have a floppy fence around the garden and let them roam around. They help me weed. Little wire cages around some plants but mostly bricks at the plants roots. I will say mulch is tricky. I use it on only a couple beds. The chickens really move it around

Oh yea that’s true! In concept I love mulch but it won’t stay where you want it if you have chickens. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Thanks for posting this helpful video for how to put plants in chicken run. Was just wondering what plant (leafy vines) is shown both at 5:57 and 10:20? And do the chickens eat the leaves? Thanks for letting me know!

Hi! I have other videos on my channel that name all the plants, the playlist is called “Chickens and your garden.” But I think you mean grapevines! There are so many varieties, they grow back bigger every year, and yes the chickens eat the leaves that they can reach. ✌🏻❤️🐓

With all the plants do you get a lot of spiders? Or do the chickens take care of that and eat them? I'm new to chicken care so I don't know a lot. Love your videos!

Essentially, yes. No one wants to pay to do the research on dosages for chickens. So it’s for herd animals like goats and cows. Remember I’m not a vet but that’s what all chicken tenders have to do. ✌🏻❤️🐓
