Cayenne also deters rodents (mammals in general) from going after their feed. I remember picking that tip up to keep squirrels out of my bird feeder.

Yes you’re right! I recommend it to friends for their outdoor plants as well. You will have to reapply it regularly, but it is really cheap and low risk, as it doesn’t hurt any wildlife. And honestly, it would deter me too! 🤣✌🏻❤️🐓

With all of your herbs, except the garlic, how much do you add and how often. I currently ferment my chicken feed and add crushed peppers, oregano, basil and cinnamon to 1 gallon of fermented feed, but I kinda guess at how much and need some guidance. I also add food grade diatomaceous earth weekly to help deworm them. Live your video. Thanks so much with your guidance, it's so helpfull!!

Hey! I honestly don’t measure. For a gallon of fermented feed you could start with one tablespoon each. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Maybe you could try giving them some marigold flowers and see if it helps them.

You could do once a week! The key is that MOST of the time they just have plain fresh water, so rinse out the ACV the next day. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Good timing for this video. I've been looking at herbs I can find at the grocery until I can grow some. Plus perinnual plants that are good for the chickens to eat that I want to plant this year! And I just looked up oil of oregano yesterday, for the chickens and us. Have recently heard oregano may be used as an antibiotic, since those types of those things that will no longer be sold over the counter as of June...

Yes! Remember that (in my non medical opinion) oregano isn’t the same as a prescription medication but I do feel there are certain instances when it can really help. And a lot of store bought herbs can be regrown and propagated!!! I did that with rosemary and basil! (Did not work for parsley and cilantro but that wasn’t for the chickens anyways.) ✌🏻❤️🐓

I've been using cayenne to deter pests like mice, but I've always been careful not to put it where the girls can get to it. I thought it'd be too hot. I regularly use red pepper flakes. Good to know the cayenne is safe for them if they come across it!

Yes! It’s crazy! I Can give them scrambled eggs or plain Greek yogurt literally covered in raw garlic and cayenne and they don’t even flinch. I don’t do it every day, everything in balance. But it’s so nice to have those things in our arsenal that we can rotate around. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Hi! I avoid salt and sugar but other spices would be ok. Make sure chicks have access to grit too so they can process and break it down. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Oooh yes! I made a tomato soup the other day and got to pick fresh herbs from my plants. It’s soooo cool! And so far my oregano is doing well too. 😎 My chickens get it in their feed but hopefully I can eventually have more plants around too. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Love the video! Subscribed to you recently. . If you can't get fresh herbs, will the dried ones like Oregano and Basil flakes work also?

Oh yeah definitely! I’ll add that you can buy from the grocery store, and then save some of the herbs, put them in a cup of water, and within a week or two you will have roots that you can plant your own! I have also used ground up herbs because I feel like it sticks to the pellets better.

Hi! I honestly have it in with the entire 20 pound quantity. So I mix the whole batch and then fill their feeders as needed. I also always put cayenne, raw garlic, etc. on the treats whenever I give things like yogurt or oatmeal. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Can you add that for chicks or just for grown hens? What about mixing grit in chicks feed? Love your channel!!! ❤

Hi! I wouldn’t add anything to the babies except maybe a tiny bit of garlic (but I’m no expert). And I never mix in grit - I want it to be separate so they can see it and get what they need. You can offer grit to chicks but it’s not necessary until they’re bigger and eating other things than chick feed, like plants or bugs! ✌🏻❤️🐓

Thanks again Sarah for your informative video Do you have experience with integrating pullets in with your laying hens? How do you feed them so the laying hens get their calcium? What do you feed them? I feed my hen(s) Kalmbach reserve and a blend from the breeder for the littles. Oh by the way there is scientific studies about onion and garlic for laying hens/chickens and it is positive ❤️ ( of course the amount is a factor as you mentioned)

Oh that’s interesting - I’d always heard onions are dangerous so mine have never had any! I would honestly have out both feeds and let the chickens grab what they want when they want it. And I’d have oyster shell offered to the side - I really feel that laying hens can sense what they need and so if you have it available, they can grab it. ✌🏻❤️🐓

@@realsimplemama I started digging a little deeper with that when I realized I have all kinds of wild onions and garlic growing in my yard and I thought great I can’t free range they pop up everywhere! Just like the internet bloggers and social media posters scare us to death don’t give your dogs leftover Olive Garden there is garlic butter be safe than sorry, garlic is toxic and butter will cause hearts disease ( this was a real FB meme ) when in reality they need cloves per lb of body weight before they are harmed so keep your veggies away from puppies but share your pasta with your puppies and chickies. 😂 So right now I have one vision impaired hen and 4 pulleys that are ready to coexist when the nights warm up here in NC. But I have a few more chicks coming in Sept and I am wondering how will I keep all these girls properly nourished. Omg! I am so new at this. I need to make time buy and read some books. When I ask questions in groups I get too many different answers and sorting through that makes me more insecure. I just want to pick a source and try it trial and error. Thanks for your info! It is very sensible.

My chickens are loosing their feathers around there butt area any ideas why do you think they have worms I don't see long worms but could have other worms but my chickens run is so terrible and muddy right now

Oh no I’m sorry. It could be worms (check their poop, I have videos) but it’s probably that they got poop on themselves and it was irritating them, or that they might have mites/lice (I have videos on that too). That would be my guess. ✌🏻❤️🐓

No standing water, clean poop regularly or agitate the ground with a rake, lots of fresh or dried herbs - I make a deodorizing spray, I use Irish Spring soap - lots of ideas! I have a video here too just about that if you’d like to look it up.

Great info! We have 2-3 month old pullets, can they have herbs and chili powder in their feed at this age? If so, how much per pound of food? Thank you!!

Hi! They can BUT I tend to not worry about it until they’re “foraging” some, or getting time outside. If they’re old enough to be eating bugs and being out in the dirt, for example, I’d do it! But if they’re just eating grower food and they’re inside a brooder, I wouldn’t worry about it yet. The good news is I don’t know of a risk/danger to them having it young but remember I’m not a vet. ✌🏻❤️🐓

As far as quantity, I have no idea. 😆 i mix probably about 4 tablespoons per 20 pounds of food each of basil, oregano, cayenne, and whatever else I feel like. But it is definitely not an exact science with me!

Totally up to you! I don’t measure at all. If you’re not sure, start with just a few tablespoons per pound and see how they do. Document it and go from there. ✌🏻❤️🐓

All those things give a horrible taste to the eggs. I used to give them garlic and oregano and their eggs started tasting like burned feathers.

Hi! Is your crossbeak laying? I would start just with grit first and start with barely any, and then see how her crop is emptying by the morning. I don’t know enough to tell you quantities or anything but there are “special needs chickens” groups on Facebook, or you could ask on the Backyard Chicken forums too. ✌🏻❤️🐓
