How to Have Looser Brushwork

But for your videos which encourage us to focus on the big shapes, some of us (who are self-taught) would be foxed by the myriads of details that confront us. And when you start and paint those shapes in, we marvel at the effortless way you seem to factor them all in. Truly inspiring and "encouraging" for beginners like me.

When I began my journey a year ago (I did hire an art online art coach for 8 months) I watched artist videos and only focused on how they held their brushes. Bob Ross was my first experiment. I watched his videos daily for 7 days, not his piece, but how he held each brush he used and how he moved his arm/shoulder etc. Then I went about creating a painting in 20 minutes. I have 7 amazing paintings and an incredible knowledge of how to approach holding and using brushes. As you watch your videos, forget about what they are painting, watch how they use their tools, it will help you tremendously!!

@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Yes, I am making to observe that in your videos, mainly because Shibasaki, also youtube and speaks Japanese, made a huge effort to get a translator to aide him in sending the message to always observe what he has done to his brush and angles of use. It alerted me to the concept before using one and it is a dimension the beginner should learn to observe, (I am a beginner, too). I would feel more confidence in a bit of brush tutorial and am looking to those, including care of them, especially if out doing plein air. I would prefer not observing only a realist... for difference of use and comparison. I use acrylics and scrap thick papers to play with types of possibilities of what brushes can do and get used to holding them without too much tension.
I fall short of words to express how valuable l find your videos. It’s also the most peaceful content to watch on the Internet. Thank you for doing what you do .
Thanks for another great video. I love when you draw on the image digitally to illustrate what you're talking about. It's also helpful to see the images side by side, whether the photo and the finished painting, or the block-in and the finished painting, or the original photo and the cropped version, etc., to get a sense of the differences and the choices you're making. And it's always great to get to watch you paint.

Monument valley, simple and stark??? Oh my I see it so differently. So many amazing shapes rising out of the ground. I could never focus and choose just one like you did! I just stop and stare when I have the luxury of going there on my travels. Truly one of the most amazing places in the USA. Fabulous lesson as always in planning and simplicity. Shakes shapes shapes… mantra… 😂 nice to see the grey cardigan come out😊 I am going to check out your smaller book. I have the Mastering composition and have given it to three other artists as a gift so good timing to remind me about the next gift….

Hi Alison, delighted you enjoyed the video and thank you for recommending my book. So I agree with you about Monument Valley. When you're in it, it is magnificent, and complex and rich. But when you come to paint it, and I find this with all plein air, whether Provence or Maine or wherever, you have to settle down and find a tight, crafted crop, some simple shapes, that gives the feeling of the whole, because you can't paint the whole. So I looked for those shapes, which I called simple and stark, that could imply that majesty. All the very best for Thanksgiving
I've learnt so much ... I need to be reminded about simple shapes constantly! Going to get the book for myself ... my treat to me. Thanks Ian

That was a fascinating look at a landscape that I know I would've struggled with. The overwhelming scale of the place would have indeed overwhelmed me---I can tell just from your photo. Once again, your seeming effortless ability to simplify, and with such beautiful results is compelling. I try, I really do, with each painting, but I find myself getting caught up in nit-noid details and it's infuriating. I'll keep working at it of course, but I doubt I'll ever achieve a similar smooth, straightforward approach. Thanks for another great video Ian!

The rose rocks and clear blue sky were a wonderful antidote to the weather the last two dank days in England! * see below. I was fascinated to see you focusing on the big shapes which emphasised the verticals when the natural strata of the sandstone were in horizontals layers. It should be so easy to mimic nature and to lose the dramatic composition. Often you show us what to ignore! * No sun - no moon! No morn - no noon - No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member - No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! - November! Thomas Hood

I sympathize on the weather Ian. Being in California now locals claim there are seasons here. And while it is true, sort of, coming from Canada it just seems warm and sunny all the time. I remember those November days. All the best.
Greetings from London. I wanted to say thank you for all of your videos as I've been watching them weekly (now monthly) for the last two years and look forward to a new upload each time. I feel I have learnt so much from your lessons about the value of composition and contrasting value masses, and the importance of leading the viewer's eye with colour and detail. It's so rare to combine such a clear teaching style with an ability to draw on examples of the teacher's own work which are themselves so beautiful. Thank you!

The book arrived within 24 hours and it is excellent - I also have the essays, which really make me think. I said this in my email, Ian but would like to share it: You are the first person to really make me think about my work in many many years. I had grown too comfortable, churning out tjhe same old same old year after year with my palette largely based on earth colours. What I find so refreshing is your use of complementary primaries and secondaries to control tone and temperature. Plus, of course, the simplification of composition. My work is already benefiting from this. Thank you.

@IanRobertsMasteringComposition
Жыл бұрын
Delighted you are enjoying the videos. and the book. Are you talking about watercolor. Because then large wash that are too dark well that can be a problem. With oils you can just lay in a slightly lighter value. But also it helps to lay in a two or three color one next to the other to text the "key" of your painting to make sure you have the values basically in the ball park before laying in the whole mass. Hope that helps. All the best.
I have only started painting a couple of months ago and your videos and website have been invaluable, so thanks a lot! I’m using acrylics and applying your principles as best I can, but if you had any advice regarding painting in acrylics I would be most interested. Your book is on my Xmas wish list 🎁
@IanRobertsMasteringComposition
Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, good luck with your new painting practice. The main thing I would suggest with acrylics is spray the panel with water and add a retarder to the paint. The main issue I find with acrylics is because the paint dries so quickly the painting gets edgy. The brushstrokes start leaving edges that are too hard. So keeping the paint wet softens that. All the best.

I have down the "big shapes". I would love for you to show us how to finish the painting with more detail techniques. For example, you darken and dull something down, how do I do that? Smaller details use different brushstrokes? Thank you for your very informative videos.

HI Amy, next video is the same idea but more intricate so perhaps that will address your questions. I don't really paint details really. Rather I paint smaller shapes. That may seem like splitting hairs but it is a different way of thinking about detail. As I say hopefully the Dec 6 video will address your questions. Or part of them. All the best.
