How to hardcode subtitles with VLC media player
Ғылым және технология
a.k.a. Subtitles not showing up after hardcoding in VLC fix.
a.k.a. Subtitles showing up multiple times after hardcoding in VLC fix.
If you're watching this you've probably tried burning subtitles to your video and encountered multiple errors - either subtitles not showing or displaying multiple times.
I've tried just about everything to come up with this solution. Check it out :)

On the current VLC version, you don't have to do that last step where you delete part of the string, the new version has optimized this and it works wonders!! Thanks so much for such a clarifying video!

Worked perfectly, thank you very much. Doing this for my sister for her Christmas present (Christmas Eve right now). So I'm glad it's so incredibly easy to do with VLC! Thanks bro.

Sir, thank you so much for this video and all your help! You have no idea how long I've been struggling to hardcode my subtitles, since my Samsung TV won't properly read subtitles I've edited using programs like Subtitle Edit. This worked like an absolute charm and you have just made my movie watching a heck of a lot easier! You've earned a new subscriber!

Hi can you tell me which version of vlc are you using ? I don't have "stream" on the latest version, there is one thing that looks like it but then I don't have the part where you are supposed to delete the "codecT40 "
My video has two sub tracks. is it possible to remove one of them? When I hardcore those files, second sub track pops up too in a small font and idk what to do
My issue is a little different. I have a video that has soft subs (they can be turned on and off) but there's no separate .srt file. It's just part of the file itself. But I need to change the audio codec on the video so that my PS4 recognizes it. But whenever I do this, the subtitles are completely removed (it's an episode of Super Dragon Ball Heroes, which is in Japanese so I need the English subs for it). Is there any way to hardcode these subs without a separate .srt file?
+Magic Monk - The icon that VLC uses is a "traffic cone". You've probably seen them in the streets near construction sites or in No Parking zones. :)

hello, thank you for your video. a question, On "subtitles" window, where i need to choose T.140 you have 2 check marks. when i'm clicking the "overlay..." my T.140 become gray... WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
2:43 Do you know which lines should I change, if I want to change the size and the color of subtitles? Thanks.
So counterintuitive that I watched this video nearly a dozen times, but it works flawlessly. Huge thank you!
thanks for the info...only one problem, it seems to write out each sentence twice, thereby taking up half the screen. any idea what im doing wrong? thanks
Video quality took a huge hit, framerates seem inconsistent... during movement it's skipping a lot when it did not before when it was an mkv file... any idea why?
need an updated version of 2021 VLC. if you click overlay now, the subtitle choices are greyed out. also the video codec and audio codec, can i tick the original video and sound without reencoding?
Hey! Does this allow, with some tweaking, to allow it to turn them on or off? I've seen some mp4s with audio track and sub lang "track" choices, and obviously, a way to turn them off completely. All in one mp4 file. I'm asking because english is not my main speaking language, and to exercise my hearing, I like to turn subtitles off. Thanks.
Thanks! Works like a charm every time. I keep coming back to your video.
- - the movie file I want to hard code was downloaded in vlc format - will it work not being a thumbnail file like shown in the tutorial ?
@Magic Monk, even though i followed your steps there is a repeat of the subtitle lines about 2-3 times in each scene. Can you help me solve this?
Hi, in your video, i assume that the subtitle file should be in the same folder and VLC automatically detects it? If not, at which point do i define the subtitle file?
@magic monk what is the VLC version that you are using? tks
I want to be able to copy the subtitles on screen in VLC player so I can copy and paste the words really fast (instead of having to look and type them in). Do you know if this is possible?
how do i add a english subtitles file in a video in itself ? like i have to keep adding the english subtitles from my files each time i open the mp4 file and its not added into the mp4 file itself (if this all makes sense)
what version of vlc are you using in this video? i've tried this so many times and it still won't work for me
Is it possible to make hardsub on ios device? Or using vlc on iphone? I couldn’t find via vlc on ipad
Thanks for the video tutorial.. I'll try it.. one quick question: why does the output file size is shown as 0 bytes when you hover your mouse cursor (@4:26)?
I'm sure it works well enough for short videos, but from my experience with this method, while it does add the subtitles, it desyncs the audio to an insane degree. The desync starts off as bearable, then gets progressively worse. By the end of a two hour video the audio for a gunshot, for example, comes multiple seconds before the trigger is ever pulled. Edit: Selecting to keep the original audio while editing the profile the doesn't fix the problem, but it does make it slightly better. Streaming it at all seems to be what desyncs the audio. In other words, it is the process itself that keeps causing problems. After further reading I have discovered that this problem may only apply to mp4 files.
Eddie, great tutorial but my subtitles are out of sync. I can correct for it while playing but can I adjust the offset before transcoding?
Eddy, What version of VLC are you using? I'm using 2.2.4 and it doesn't look the same as yours thus I can't follow instructions! Please help!
Please help. After adding subtitles your way (really simple by the way-thanks!) there seems to be an issue with the sound (it is delayed). I watch te video on my TV, and I can't set the speed there... do you have any ideas? Thanks
Happy to come across your tutorial after hours of hectic search... works perfectly. Great work, thanks a lot!
with WMP, after streaming ended from VLC, i don't have audio, why? thanks
and how do you sync the subs before saving the hardcoded version?
Hey There! Great tutorial, thank you! One question though, how could get the subtitles with a black background and not just the white text? Thank you!
Why when I check mark the "overlay subtitles on the video" does the "Subtitles" check mark above goes to grey and not able to be unchecked or check nor does it allow the codec to be changed. I followed exactly with video so I am thinking versions are different. Anyone got any info on this?
when hardcoded, how to adjust or sync audio and sub well?
the video file i have, doesn't have the extension .mp4 in its name by default. I renamed the file along with the extension, and then i have tried your method, but the creation of the videofile doesn't start. the wizard just automatically gets minimized. what am i doing wrong?
Thank you so much for the tutorial. However, I can only make it work in VLC. When I try to open the file with Windows Movies & TV or Windows Media Player, it sends me this error: "Can't play This file isn't playable. That might be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect, or the file is corrupt. 0xc00d36c4" Are there any settings, format or CODEC I can change to make it work with any of the players above?
were do i find subs for just the foreign speaking parts ,went on yify subs and sub scene , i hard coded the subs but they were english subs for the full film ,i also had issues with sound but il cross that bridge when i come to it
Does this only work in vlc or can you use that file on iTunes so I can put it on my iPad?
Any better option if not with vlc? Bcs if file 3 hours you need to wait long you know.
This is a superb tutorial thank you! Maybe they've upgraded VLC somehow since you made this but I found that the scodec=t140 had already been removed by the time I got to that page. I continued without touching that code and the conversion worked beautifully. thanks again!

I have a question. What do you do if you need to sync the subtitles before you hardcode? I have a Digital DVD video copy and its subtitle file, but the subtitles are slower that the video. I have to do Track Synchronization to hasten the subtitles by about 1-second to get it up to speed with the audio and video. How can I hardcode the subtitles after a Sync adjustment?
I love these guys that do tutorials that don't work and don't respond to the critiques that youtubers leave.
Its a long wait for a movie streaming but anyhow thanks for the good work!
Thanks for this video. I have been unsuccessful in hardcoding in VLC with sound until this video and comments below. Excellent job! Excellent presentation.
after browsing through so many channels. Yours is by far the best. The explaining thod is so great and detailed even complex stuff is
It didnt work with my VLC version 2.2.4, i can imagine that they may fixed this bug cause the layour of stream is different and even I tried to do a similar process but didnt work, any recomendations for the 2.2.4 version? thanx
Thanks a lot. But is it possible to sync subtitles with the video during this process?
HELP!...Anyone know how to embed a subtitle that is not a separate SRT file?...Some of my vids have the subtitles already in the movie file (mkv files I think) and I have to check under 'Subtitle' if I want to play them while running in VLC...How do I embed those to play through my TV...Thanks in advance...
Hardcoding was successful but I lost audio when I played the file in a TV through a USB stick! It's an mp4 file if it matters and the TV is Sony Bravia KDL46EX720 (2011 model), and when I play the version of the video without the hardcoded subs everything is great, but when I play the hardcoded version of the file the audio has been vanished! Any solutions?
I tried every step exactly several times and each time where it's supposed to do the timer count as the video is supposed to be hard coding, the screen just has the orange cone, but no counting or playing bar color appearing. I have even let it sit and wait for over an hour and nothing happens, no new video appear. My files look exactly like yours. I have Windows 10 (latest) w/ i7 (latest), 16GB Ram, and NVidia card so plenty of power to process this easily. What else can I try? Thanks.
got it any way to do the same with a subtitle track that you tun on
I think i found the right videoone thing i still wanna know, does it work with zawgyi font also?
How can I hardcode multiples videos at once? Any way to make it automatic?
hi this worked perfectly but i have a doubt. Is there anyway we can control font size cos the subs is huge and when i take it to tv it just dominates the screen
This man has never seen and recognized a construction cone in his lengthy and experiential life.

Can know a way to remove harcoded subtitle from anime episode that downalde at the site soulreaper
Your method does work. Thank you for that. But I'm trying to subtitle a .mp4 file that's around 3gb and my final subtitled file is only 891mb..and of significantly lesser video quality than the source file.. any suggestions..?
Excellent advice thankyou but what if you file has several different language subtitles embedded (muxed) in with the original video file and you only want to use one subtitle language?
If I'm using .smi files instead of .srt, is there a different process?
Um, the video just keeps turning out corrupted and unplayable. I keep following this video but it doesn't seem to work.

Hey Eddie, I am all frustrated because your magic do not work with me, what version is your program?
+Magic Monk - Does the video file HAVE to be MP4 ? I have it as an ISO. Do I need to convert it to MP4?
@nUrnxvmhTEuU
7 жыл бұрын
ISO is *not a video format*, it is a disc image. If you have Win 8/10 (or linux or some specialized software on older Wins), you can *mount* the ISO (right-click, mount) and a new drive appears (as if you inserted a physical disc). Then in VLC select Stream > Disc and continue according to this tutorial ;)
So this only works for mp4 file format and not MKV?
How long does it take to merge the video plus SRT file? I can very successfully merge these files using the software HD Video Converter Factory but using 720p resolution takes roughly the running time of the video and 1080p resolution takes roughly double the running time. I download a lot of Korean dramas with 50 to 150 episodes from you tube and then download the SRT file from downsub.com. and merge them with HD Video Converter Factory. It takes a lot of time but does a good job of permanently embedding the sub title. The mp4 embedded video can be played on any TV that has a USB port.
My video was rotated by 90 degrees - any ideas on how to fix that
Hi Edy! I followed your instructions and the file vlc created was without sound . Any idea?

YOu need to select "conserve original audio and same for video"
I've tried three times and the best result so far is that I get the word "WHISTLEING" AND THEN "SINGING" in the opening scene then nothing. Does it need a particular .srt file from a particular site. Don't know if there are some duff ones floating around.
the first time i try to do it my file was in another type of video and hardcoded in that type byt the sybtitles aren't ther so I delete that file and changing it to vls type byt when I tried to hard code the video i can't
what is that pushup.srt? and how to get that? thank you
Thanks. Was easy to hardcode a subtitle following your video. Ran in to a problem though with the audio not being in sync afterwards in the new file. Just a slight delay of 2 seconds or so, still enough to make it unwatchable though. Tried it with 3 different movies and had the same issue with all of them. Any ideas?
Thank you for the video. How does this work backwards? HardSub of srt? Thanks
thanks! but can i do it with .sup subtitles? because i have 3d movie.
I don't have that "Generated stream output string" after subtitles window, and therefore, can't delete "scodec". So, how?
Cool but are there any quick method for this? What if we need to hardcode subtitle on a longer video like a movie or something?
so wtf exactly does deleting that scodec=t140 do and htf did u come to that conclusion?
where did you actually select the subtitle file you wanted?
Great video thank you! This is way more complicated than it needs to be would have been lost without this video.
Tried this in the latest version and in between lost the voice of the video. Do you know why? Help
bonjour qqun peut il me dire comment dans vlc on vire le titre de la vidéo qui apparait qqs secondes en bas de l'écran au debut ? grand merci pour la rep
Will the subtitles be there if you upload the video to KZread?
Is it possible to hardcode multiple videos at once?
I'm on a mac and have downloaded the VLC media player, but there are no buttons on the top of the screen. Where your screen shows "Media" -> "Playback" -> "Audio" -> "Video" -> "Subtitles" etc. my screen shows nothing. Any idea why that might be? I've been trying to figure this out for an hour now and every single online resource is telling to just click the Subtitle button on the top of my VLC screen. You can imagine how frustrating it is to not have that option. I have no idea why it's not there.
Subtitles in the portrait position changed to landscape after merge.... Pls help
I actually got a problem with this method, The hard coded subs work great as intended. but the hard coded version has severe audio and video desynched problems, why is that and how can i fix it?
when I press stream it says building font cache, what's that?
please help I cant load subtitle and system gives me this error mes:" this file isn't playable. that might be because the file type is unsupported, the file extension is incorrect, or the file is corrupt".
Can you show how to hardcode the subtitles without overlay? I wanted the subtitles to display at the bottom and the video cropped display on top.
may i know that why after i merge it the subtitle become came out double
Hmmm, so if you want to do that for a movie, you have to wait 2 full hours for it to be done?
can you tell me the screen recorder you used?????????
how about the video file's codec is "ts"? How can I put subtitle? 'Cause everytime I'm doing it VLC always crushes.
What about recording say a 12 minute clip along with subtitle from the middle of a larger video?
Worked thank you, but when the video with the subtitles finished, the final video had no sound. Probably some audio setting at the output of the video (VLC) prevented that ? I have tried to find a setting like that on VLC, with no luck. Any idea anyone?
how you change the subtitles files
I've been doing it this way for like 2 years but now my video is coming out without audio 😭😭 do you have any idea why is this happening? I swear I'm doing the exact same thing, no headphones plugged in or something like that
What's with the "profile name"??? Yours has one. Mine is blank. It asks me to type something in and I don't know what to type in. If it needs a profile name how do I get one?
You're a world champion. I've been struggling with this for hours... THANK YOU!
