How to Handle Differences of Opinion

Xisuma Says Playlist ► • Xisuma Says
What's the best way to deal with opposing points of view? Seek understanding, listen to one another, and see the situation from their point of view or the different sources of information they were exposed to.
It's so easy to point the finger at others. Don't "slam dunk" on someone when their decisions later lead to their own suffering. Instead, show compassion for that individual. Attacking someone's opinion only makes them dig in further.

    1) Are they arguing in good faith? 2) Is what they are arguing for morally/ethically defensible? 3) Do they offer you access to the sources they used to come to their conclusions? If you can answer 'yes' to the above: listen to their perspective with attention, question their assumptions and data sources where needed. If confused, ask them to clarify for you why they have drawn _these_ conclusions from _that_ data. If 'no', don't bother: it's a shill or a troll, not a person worth listening to.

    I didn't want content creators telling people what political side they belong to. I was scared I may feel distant or a large group of individuals may feel that way and stop watching the creator. But now I realise the problem is the fact that people cannot tolerate other people's opinions. People must be able to say how they feel about stuff.

    I agree with this to an extent. I also was so against everyone sharing their "controversial" opinions when they are influential to a lot of people, and for me personally, depending on the audience of the content creator would still be against sharing such stuff, but I think after I started listening and understanding other people's opinions from outside my home, I started to realize it was fine, normal, and healthy. Then, you have the exact reason why people don't want content creators, teachers, whatever talking about such opinions; where they try to force their opinions on you. (Had to unsubscribe from a content creator that I used to look up to for this reason.) There will always be rotten apples in the bunch no matter what side you come from. There will be extremes on both sides for and against while there are middle grounders. Extremes have always been bad because that leads to close mindedness. The extremists are often the ones that will over look others bias', opinions, morals, ethics, etc. just in the name of being "correct". In reality, like Xisuma said, opinions are not cut and dry and that is why we have and need the middlegrounders. 😅 Apologies, I ended up using your comment as a place to ramble.

    honestly trying to have conversations about any hot or highly debated topic is exhausting, so i tend to just stay out of it all. i wouldn't even bother getting into an argument with someone online anymore; even if you can get past the barrier of trying to convey meaning and not misunderstanding each other over text chat, people still seem to want to defend their position to the death, ignoring any and all counterpoints. it can be tempting to try and "win", but at the end of the day nobody usually accomplishes anything and everyone just ends up wasting their time. i guess it's just a shame it's come to this because if we can't have proper debates, we all just go back to our echo chambers and achieve nothing there too. and the worst part is, there doesn't really seem to be any sort of solution to this. humans seem to be hard-coded to group up and antagonise the other group, and that just sucks i suppose. the world, i think, would be much better if we were all more willing to be kind, give the benefit of the doubt, and listen to each other more. because even if someone else's opinion sounds insane or stupid or even malicious, most people really do just think they're right. and if you had lived through their life experiences, there's every possibility you would have come to the same conclusions as them.

    I think it's worth noting that road traffic accidents are often caused by other people not following the rules, as opposed to the rules not being strict enough. Even if the rules were 3 mph everywhere, that doesn't eliminate drunk drivers and other things. This is just one specific example, but I don't think you could reduce accidents by 100% just by tightening traffic laws.

    Being in a family where my dad’s dad is wanting my family to get the vaccine, and the other where my aunt is very against it… conversations like this are things I like to be careful around, but still talk about. Of course, being at an age where I know everything I’m watching can be very influential, I like to pause a bit and dig deeper into what I’m being told, whom it’s being told from, and even the beliefs that other person has towards the situation. Bit of explanation as to my family: My dad’s dad can be anxious about my family, not that we’re unsafe, but he’s concerned and the media that he’s most likely looking into is adding on to it. Anxious to the point where he probably wants all of us to get it, instead of just my parents. The other side of this is my aunt and her family. My grandparents on my mom’s side aren’t too invested, I think, on the topic, but I don’t believe they’ve gotten the vaccine. However, my aunt is someone who doesn’t trust those in government (in the US) and therefor, doesn’t want to take the vaccine and doesn’t want her family to. Now, my mom is someone who DOESN’T want to stir up problems there, so she’s tried to not really focus on what her sister has to say on the matter, but as my aunt is someone who vocalizes her opinion and believes she’s right and wants the good of everyone else, my family hasn’t avoided hearing her opinions. So yeah, real fun. But I think seeing these experiences now is actually helpful to a degree (for me). I’ve had to think a lot about how to explain my beliefs and opinions in a way that is opening for conversations in politeness and so I can actually BE convincing. And also, just taking the emphasis off of what doesn’t matter, and what, in reality, IS just opinion, so that conversations can be more enjoyable and people will want to hang around me. (This is coming from a person who, back in 6th grade was very opinionated, and believes she was right and needed to convince people to live right as well.) But I mean, maybe this is just my set of beliefs (not opinion, as it’s faith in something and less of just, “I think I’m right about trusting in X political party, etc.”) and my drive to impact and be kind to others just comes from that… idk. It really is interesting to think about how people’s personalities, their situations, their friends/family, and their faiths/religions can impact their opinions and viewpoints in the world. Thanks for another cool “podcast episode”. I like thinking a bit more.

    Canada's biggest issue here is the inept Healthcare system. Being a government institution its extremely inflexible and inelastic to demand changes. In Ontario they only have 4000 icu beds and have actually decreased this number since the beginning. 4k beds to keep our 10million plus population healthy. It was barely enough before the virus came around. This said. I'm indifferent to c19. I've had it twice. My family has had it more. I'm more likely to die doing motorsport than catching this virus. So I take my shots, knowing they are less deadly than the virus I'm unafraid of. And I continue to prep my broken Subaru for winter rally. The lock downs can * off. They make socializing and dating excruciatingly difficult and losing that person to person socializing we get at work and school and church is destroying people's ability to empathize. In fact, a couple of years pre-covid I'd started working on a dystopian novel and had got stuck in the narrative so bought in a worldwide pandemic to twist the plot and focus. I did a lot of research on the topic and was terrified just how inevitable the scenario seemed, just how much information there was, and how unprepared we were! Unfortunately (for my mental health) when covid hit it felt like I was living through what I was writing, and where I took the story was a lot more tragic and darker than the reality - but tbh it could have been SO much worse, covid was mild to what could have happened.

    Hearing people not want the vaccine kinda bewilders me, I had covid 3 months ago and it was a living hell, I'm still not able to do anything sports related because it completely fucked my breathing, I reacted badly to the vaccine but I still say get it, it wasn't as bad as actually having covid.

    They don't want people to die from preventable things. They need beds for people with illnesses and critical things. If you don't wear your seatbelt and get in a wreck you are less likely to survive. The government wants you to live and they have shitty ways of going about it. I don't want to come off as mean. Sorry if I did.

    That's cool, but how about where opinion actively harms people? How about when opinion obscures fact? As a trans woman I deal with that often, and seeing this both appeals to my compassionate side which wants to hear everyone out on their reasoning, but also my trans side which has been insulted and degraded by "opinion" numerous times

    @@PuncakeLena I would say that their opinions don't actually hurt you unless they, or others, act on it, and then it's criminal. Because those that act out on hateful opinions get punished, society slowly learns that these opinions that led to those actions are wrong-minded and eventually these opinions become either extremely fringe, or better yet, non-existent. I know this won't help the next time someone voices a hurtful opinion, and there are a few 'opinions' that make my blood boil too, but things are getting better, people are learning how to be more tolerant, and if we keep working hard then over time we will succeed.

  • @AmbrosiaPoly-yolkEgg

    @AmbrosiaPoly-yolkEgg

    that's an idea that I personally take issue with, because by that logic, things don't neccesarily exist. Objective truths exist, such as it being objectively true that durians exist. Someone can be unaware of the existence of durians, but that doesn't nullify their existence, it only makes their perception of reality different. Now, we can only present what we believe is objective truth from the perspective of our own personal perception of reality, but our limitation to perception being the basis of our understanding of reality doesn't mean that what we perceive cannot be shaped by objective truth. And, even if our assumptions get thrown out the window, such as if it's discovered that this is all a simulation, our understanding of truth would change, but objective truth wouldn't, we'd simply have been wrong about it. TL;DR our incapacity to perceive reality in an objectively perfectly true way does not mean that the objective truth doesn't exist, it only indirectly informs our perception.
