How to handle a aggressive large parrot this one a Bare Eyed cockatoo

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A video on how to teach a aggressive bird and what to use to safety teach them to step up on to you for the first time, pretty much using a stick, or perch. He a male Bare Eyed Cockatoo named Frankie. He was sold around 4 times to different owners as none of them could handle him without getting severely attacked and he was kept in cage for years, so had a bad case of cage aggression. He is not clipped and don't need to clip him to train him as it does not make it easier to train a bird despite what others claim. If anything can make a bird depress and cause other behavior issues. Only clip wing if bird is aggressive to a female bird to resolve fighting, so female bird can get away faster, or medical issues.
He was very aggressive at first, but using stick for him to step up, it keep a safe distance from me to him, just in case he decides to attack and to first get him away from his old cage at store, so I can train him without cage aggression, as it get him away from his safe spot. Now he step up on command and even flight training him at the same time and he starting to come when whistle at, or he see me put arm out and he jump over now. Will show more stuff as I train him other tricks and work out other behavior issues.

I’m in the process of taming a grumpy bird that took a chunk out of me and he is coming around now to the point where I put mu fingers up to his beak and he won’t bit me and all I did was feed him everything I thort he might like and I talked to him to the point my neighbours got me locked up and in the end what helped a lot was covering his cage from dusk till dawn they need sleep to calm down from the shock of a new life.i got old curtains from a thrift shop put a wire loop through the tape and a screw sticking up to hang the wire loop on cost me 20 bucks and the bird (yellow crested cockatoo mean as can be)is after 2 nights of 12 hours or a bit more of sleep is calm as and sitting on my hand for short bursts SLEEP IS SO IMPORTANT it seems ,anyhow I hope this helps you because these birds are worth the effort and I want them all to be loved and happy

It makes me sad to know our birds (from Australia) are locked up in small cages and maltreated in America. These are white cockatoos that are docile and roam free in Australia. They are so gentle by nature that they fly and feed right next to people and very slow moving. A flock of them visit my home every morning at 6am and 5:30pm. This bird doesn’t become aggressive for no reason

There are bad people everywhere not just America, people need to be educated. Yes all animals should be free. I agree 100%. I only rescue because good people need to step up and help. The poachers need to be punished and breeding should be illegal but as we can’t make these laws happen right away at least we can try to be a solution by learning sharing what we learned and fighting for animal rights not making this about race or where people live.

@@irisaflowerk3624 animal breeding is not inherently bad (animals from responsible breeders do not end up in shelters or rescues!) and the concept of animal rights - animals should have the same rights as humans - calls for no human use of animals, period. Not even a pet cat or a service dog. Which is why PETA has been found to immediately euthanize the pets turned over to their shelters; they see keeping them living in captivity as too unethical.

He on a 6 foot cage now as long time ago upgraded cage. It was the cage that I got him with. When training you don't want to put him in a new unfamiliar cage right away as they get more aggressive. Plus most of the day he not even in the cage anymore and left out now. He also free flight trained and goes with me pretty every where. He no longer aggressive anymore to anyone. He no longer attack people anymore, so now he can be kept out without fearing he bite someone hard. He pretty well behaved and doesn't even destroy stuff anymore. Yes last owner mistreated him and kept him in cage and reason he had cage aggression and would attack anyone that came near him. I also don't agree with keeping birds in captive but due to illegal trade they were unfortunately. You can't just throw a bird back in the wild that was captive. So only thing you can do is give him a good quality of life. He was a rescue.

Great tips! I have adopted a 20yr old long bill corella who has very clingy aggression issues. When I let him out he goes straight for my shoulder and rubs his beak on my neck and cheek, when I try get him off he turns and attacks, if I try stop him climbing up my shoulder he attacks as well. I have to use elaborate distractions to get him down...food never works though. He gets aggressive when I’ve tried using a stick and hates going back in cage. The behaviour makes me hesitant to let him out daily, which I don’t feel is right. Would welcome any advise you might have.

Do you have videos on the first two days? My bird is a Goffin cockatoo also cage bound and probably passed from house to house. He is 20 years old and I refuse to give up on him. He hisses at me and I leave the door open all day but he never comes out. He does play with his toys and stretches while looking at me from a far if I leave the room he sometimes squawks. I have only been a cockatiel owner but never a parrot rescued like this one from a rehab. Any suggestions are appreciated thank you.

Sit close to the cage for extremely long periods of time, build this up to then opening the cage (although you already have so you can probably skip the closed part step) but just sit there for ages for cockatoo to get used to your presence. He will come out when he is comfortable, but might just take a long time. Don't feed them sunflower seeds in their mix, only as treats, reward him when he gets used to you and takes food from you even through the cage as he approaches you.

My african grey was very aggressive when I first brought her home. I bought her though the breeder my friend bought his McCaw thought I was going to have this tame bird since I bought her at a young age I think she was 2 and she was hand fed and raised when a baby. I had to get someone to come and clip her wings and even that guy said that she was a very aggressive bird and I paid him to come once a week for an hour for a month to go through steps like this and it took a while but she did come around. I would suggest that if your going to get a parrot you get lessons on how to handle them you can watch videos if you want but learn before you buy or it may be a nightmare. It that guy didn't teach me how to handle her I probably would have given her away. If you find a bird on graig's list for cheap you will have problems with them.

The bird could be plucking for a unknown health reason, or could be bored as was not out of cage and no interaction, but you want to rule out heath first. You do want to get a base line, so you know where to start and correct any deficiencies. Plucking of chest area is usually signs of health issues? My male U2 Copper his liver values were high due to poor diet they had him on, it took me a few months to correct his issues as he also had upper respiratory infections and yeast infection. Now he a 100% from his last tests and has way more energy of like a 5 year old kid. When I first got him he was breathing heavy and lack energy and was a heavy plucker and missing most his feathers. I saw your site and had to click , I have a rescue umbrella cockatoo that came from a flea market bird seller ,the seller told me the guy that sold him the bird couldn't take the bird screaming all the time and he put the bird outside ,when the bird would start screaming he would hose the bird with a garden hose at high pressure ( I really want to find this guy ! ) he said he had him only two days and hadn't really heard the cockatoo scream much ,I noticed that the bird ( I've named him Mad Max ) was really scared and nervous and you couldn't get your hand in the cage well it's been a year now and I can get him to take things out of my hand ,but when he does it he grabs it out of my hand like a spoiled three year old and he's still very scared and will bite if you get close ,when I got him he had a small cage he now has a huge cage ,he is also very close by me all day we talk but he doesn't say anything ,he gets excited and does normal crazy cockatoo stuff ,when I first got him I tried to stick train him to step up I used a1" inch dowel perch ,Ha he grabbed it at the end and chewed it in half same for all the perches in the cage he now has dragon wood perches that have held up one year so we train with dragon wood perch, I do let him out of the cage but only under constant supervision as Mad Max would destroy anything he comes in contact with he's a chainsaw with feathers I would be happy just to be able to one day get him to step up on my arm and be able to be on the cage and not have to worry about him , he's an older bird and I think he's had many homes any help would be appreciated .

Those cages are REALLY shadowy and will cause hormonal issues in sexually mature birds over time (especially cockatoos)--you want them to have full light from all sides or at least bright walls, because that purple is acting almost like a cage cover and just zapping the light out from under the cages...VERY crucial for behavioral and immune health to make sure they have normal lighting during the day (not saying you need expensive lights...but just brightly lit rooms and cages without shadows)....

To clarify, what I said about light applies all day, except when they are sleeping (on a schedule of 12 hours of sleep each night--in which case, they should be covered or in a dark room)--excluding birds with night-frights, who may need a night-light..

Every time I approach with the stick , I say step up. He wont step up and he will walk in the opposite direction after he bites the stick. hard. Ive tried over and over to no avail. One time he was on my shoulder and he bit my ear so hard I could hear my own cartilage as it was being bitten. The times we have managed to go outside, he will start biting my shoulder or neck as soon as we are 5 ft out the door and he wants to go back inside the.house. I want to be able to say step up and for him to do it without biting me. I love my bird and he is in his forever home with me. I tell him over and over again no one will ever hit him again nor will he be neglected. I just dont want to be bitten anymore. Please, any advice or suggestions are greatly needed and appreciated

there is apearently a trick to dominate or immediately permanently erase dominance issues with roosters(chickens) if they attack a person or kid.. people sometimes put the bird gently but ofcourse over-ruling with the fronthead or stirn down on the soil or between the claws..(about 15 seconds or so is what is concluded) this manouvre, triggers a "i 'm beat and accept my position"effect.. so it seems.. not positivly sure.. but judging from our habbits to..it might be a universal mechanism that at least seems afirmed to stop the aggresion from roosters.... i'm curious if such would be the case with parrots too, and if thats possible to conduct or peform, without causing harm to the bird..or the person doing so.. it might sound harsh but sometimes not establishing position/ roles, will result in lifelong problems due to the often confrontational behaviour this uncertainty keeps triggering from animals..

He's aggressive because you are calling him a bare eyed cockatoo! Try referring to him as a little corella😂

As a "parrot genie" you should know not to pet a parrot's body, especially an aggressive one.

Actually I do know body language well. Plus he no longer aggressive anyone. He actually stays out of cage most of the day now. He no longer attacks anyone anymore. Plus his cage was long time ago upgraded to a 6 foot stainless steel cage which he only sleep in, or eats. He actually more behaved then my U2's for the most part. Plus he free flight trained now and goes even to work and outside with me. He been a great companion. The aggression is long gone.. The last time he bit someone has been over 2 years now.

Just try not to scratch them between the wings like that, stick to around the face and top of the head scratches and pets only. It causes very bad sexual stresses on a bird, especially cockatoos. Its just not good for them, even though it looks cute and feels like your bonding. I see this far too much on videos, and that alone can lead to biting and aggression. It's not fair to tease your bird and then leave him hanging every day, imagine how that would make you feel.

Humans are peculiar beings. How do you expect birds (which are intelligent) to come out of solitary confinement and accept our world as their own? Some will and some won't. Millions of years of evolution are not ours for the changing. I liken it to slavery. Is this really what you want?

This bird is an Australian Corrella not a Bare Eyed Cockatoo. What an ignorant insult to this bird by a bare arsed human. This bird doesn’t belong in America where someone smuggled it. These birds live in large groups broken up into smaller family groups and have extremely strong bonds with their mates and bigger family. They don’t belong in captivity with humans unless a rescue animal. This bird is very intelligent and needs constant stimulation or it will get sick, die of grief and loose all its feathers. These videos make me angry.

The bird species is a little corella not an Australia Corrella. Number 2 be actually is a rescue from someone that wasn’t taken care of him properly as they had him on a poor diet and not giving him attention and leaving him in a cage all day. Now he gets a few hours out of the cage on most days and free flight trained him since, so he well taken care of nowadays. I also upgraded his cage to a much larger stainless steel cage a few years back. Number 3 he missing no feathers and fully feathered and in very good health. Then finally I actually volunteered and worked a a few wildlife sanctuaries over the years. Plus have two other umbrella cockatoo’s that been with me for 4 years before I rescued him, so fully aware how to handle and take care of them properly and worked with many species of birds over the years. Next time don’t assume anything before commenting, or speaking because you’re completely wrong in this case. Yes I do know exactly how intelligent these birds are. I had him now for a few years he practically goes almost every where with me and is a great companion as don’t even consider him a pet as that would be insulting to him, he more a family member, or good friend. Now do I hate that he a captive bird and not free of course but unfortunately people smuggle and breed them and sell them to a impulse buyer that doesn’t know how to properly care for them and how loud and have the time to give the required attention these birds need and end up dumping them at a rescue, or worst leaving them in cage all day in a corner or garage. Yes in some cases in bad conditions and bird in poor health, I seen it all over the years.
