@Michelle Meade & @Birdtricks - I've been bummed lately because my (approximately 8 to 9 month old) budgie has been biting me for the past few months and sometimes getting aggressive with my hand. I've had him almost 7 months now. This is a new behavior that started about 2 months ago. His bite doesn't hurt, but I want it to stop. I don't want him biting my grand children who love him dearly. I got him from a pet store so I've had to tame him myself. He spent the majority of the first few months mostly cage bound because he was so scared to come out of his cage. That's his "safe space." Now, he'll come out and explore close to his cage and spend some time outside of it. I don't know whether this new aggression is hormonal or if it's boredom or if he's just a grump. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Exactly, we breed too notch German shepherds for law enforcement, SAR and service dogs. My dogs are very well trained. They do occasionally go off the rails. They are always sensitive to weather, seasonal and earth magnetic changes. Currently, we are seeing herd migration out here in West. We are waiting on the big one …..earthquake. Animals are moving from west to east. They predict sometime June the quake will hit along the Cascade Zone. We have been trying to prepare several years now. Pray it will not be massive. This is expected to set off Yellowstone. When Mt St Helen blew her top in 80’s the devastation was unbelievable. The area to this day…..look’s like a bomb went off.

Thanks for showing everyone the warning fluff, I often see videos with people getting "surprise" bites, but you can see the body language beforehand and I feel they're just not aware of what to look for

parrots are just feathered cats. "Pet me, pet me, *attacks your hand* Why aren't you petting me?"

This so reminds me of children when they are having challenges in their life. Bean feels safe around you and acts out when he didn't feel safe acting out without you.

I always used to behave like i was dealing with a bi-polar two yr old when I dealt with em.

He’s being distractingly cute though, constantly presenting the back of his neck for scritches!

The way I could tell bean was being aggresive was through his eyes. his eyes were squinting and pinning.

It's incredibly hard to get inside the mind of a bird, just when you think you have it sussed they do something crazy

I wonder if he was a bit rude towards the birbs in the garage, and they corrected him. His birdy manners didnt seem the best when Bondi was trying to help him crate train.

My Grey does a similar click sound when he's angry. It's my que to stop and pay attention to his body language and what I'm doing that is causing the aggression. I've been super successul and have not been bitten in the last 2 years. He was a rehome that I bought from an lady that had an impulse buy and had no clue about parrots. He was kept in closet for nearly the entire time she had him and he was afraid of most everything. With lots of work and encouragment and now the sweetest most confident bird. He's not a talker but he knows his colors and shapes and does a wide range of sound effects.

Bean must be feeling cranky due to lack of sleep and the pain in his face after what he been through that night.

I could definitely see the aggression and felt it too. Bean was not his happy self. It looks like he got bit.

You perfectly described my male grey parrot who passed away 3 years ago. He did the same thing you show at 8:38 with the mean feathers. Luring us for petting and then suddenly bites. That's the meaning of this body language. I really know that very well.

He looks like he knows what you’re talking about and he feels embarrassed 🙈, so sweet.

Love this, my Grey can be pretty unpredicatabe and learning those subtle body laugage moves is absolutely key thanks for showing!

I’ve had an African grey since he was 6 months old , he’s 26 this year ! All I can say is they can change just like but you have to tell him to be nice or step up . Mine likes being sung to also they are super intelligent so colour blocks and different objects expand the mind . Play games ie ; tell him the shape and colours of different shaped wood toys then ask him to pick a shape you ask for . Get him to focus on nice things then he will be very happy as he’s using him mind more then aggression will stop 🇬🇧🇬🇧xx

@@elaineambrose7413 I thought it was 45-ish (most I read is 35-55). Macaws reach 90 easily, usually: larger birds live longer (unlike dogs).

First time I met my bird he bit my fingernail in half. Didn’t know I was going to be his mom until my brother in law died. 20 years later I can only pet him when my hubby’s not home. Been solely feeding him and you’d think he’d like me by now.

I think Bean was traumatized by one of the other birds and was simply looking to you for comfort and cuddling,, when he bit you he was reminding you to keep scratching, that is my guess but I'm the owner of a cockatoo

Sorry Bean and you guys have had situational stress. But this was a great video of how adept you are at reading his body language. It makes me think about how good our domesticated companion like dogs and cats have become at reading human body language for the most part and what a gift that is for our bonding. They have to do most of the signal reading and are often very forgiving of our mistakes and inconsistencies. It also makes me think about being visually impaired as I am, a wild parrot would be even more of a challenge for me. If I had to hold a frustrated bird close enough to see raised back feathers, I would likely be close enough to be at risk for a bite. Thank you, Jamie, for your clear description and attention to camera work! As a person who cannot see the beauty of birds in trees but can mostly hear them, your videos educate and delight me. Using my iPad zoom feature lets me see little Bean/s wound and his raised feathers. Love all you and Dave do. And a hug to your getting-taller Capri because she is great with the bids too (and even I can tell she’s growing😂)

I’m really happy that you posted this video because my Amazon has a similar behavior that confused and frustrated the life out of me. He’d come over for heard scratches which is all cool but then if he’s asking and I ignore him he’d keep begging and eventually he takes the hint and moves on. Butttt their are times where he gets pissed off and his back feathers raises up as well and his body language gets super heavy and it feels like he’s saying make the wrong move and I’ll eff you up .. at which point I’ll get him off my hands and have him chill out. But just seeing bean do the same demonic trance behavior that my Amazon does and seeing how you worked thru it is comforting because I do the same .. I’ve recognized he does it when he’s going thru a molt or maybe he didn’t sleep well etc. but sometimes it just happens if he gets extra excited ( or at least what I think is excited) and that’s the part that I’m struggling to read

Never compare amazon behaviour with african grey behaviour. They are quite different. Amazons have this amazing tailflare for example. But humans responses.. not bad :) My african grey was living beside 2 amazons for a few years, so he 'spoke' amazonian to me when he moved in here. I did not understand him! (He was my 3rd african grey at that time, I grew up with my first.)

There was an African Gray on Marlene Mccohens channel that did an even more exorcist looking head thing. The way he twisted his head was unlike anything I had seen an African Gray do. Its more like something you might expect from an owl.

I hit the wrong key ; he and I did everything how long should I wait to get another beautiful Quaker or even a African gray thx for giving us the opportunity to learn and love these beautiful babies.

I always hear the birds who do that …who were taught “kisses” every time their former owners had them step up (often very attentive adoring Children who outgrow them and trade in their relationships for relationships with other humans paying less and less attention to them… or they got ditched in a breakup and the person who PAID for the bird, rather than the one who the bird preferred got “custody” and the bird becomes a possession, then an annoyance. I think it was part of their “ritual” with a human…it’s the sound of kisses… it’s attachment Human/Bird ritual communication for affection… and part of their attachment rituals with his former humans, I bet. He can love you and be trying to adapt …but still struggle with the extreme FRUSTRATION he feels at not being able to “attach or interact in a way HE understands” from a whole lifetime of communication with other humans…so he is like “WTF is going on …this human doesn’t act right” … Even when he has been “abandoned” …to a terrific situation by pretty terrific (if not perfect-who is?) former owners. Love Bean! and You! and Your Mini-Me!! I feel like he misses Kisses! And is being aggressive - but you are for sure doing all the right stuff…except maybe letting it go on too long to get it for the camera. That feels some kind a way to my heart. But I know it’s temporary. But it’s fun watching him learn how to Bird with You. And of course he misses his people and grief is normal and I hear his heart!! If you could make a 3 second TIK TOK Video of just the segment from this one of you looking DIRECTLY into the camera and saying “There is ONLY so much ‘Petting’ that is GOOD for Birds” and his “bite” and just have it repeat over and over and over…that would be awesome!

My quaker has been being like this quite often, likely dur to spring hormones. The way he mellows himself out is by being outside!

Wow wow wow that back fluffing feathers makes Soo much sense now.. I get bit a lot when those back feathers fluff up .. mine also asked for head rubs and then bites really hard. When those back feathers fluff up... Thanks Sooo much ... I think he's in pain and his face hurts so maybe this is why he doesn't really want to "work or teach" today...

i admit mine bit me bad a year ago, i haven't been able to handle him since. It was a really bad bite on palm of my hand took ages to heal. I was lucky not to lose a chunk. I was hand feeding him some treats in his cage & he didn't want the treats he wanted to come out, but i was going out so.. bloodbath.

African Greys love to beak, although not sure what it means. Mine beaks me all the time but has never bitten me and she is about 20 years old!

Question.... Do birds stack emotions and triggers? I work with a lot of high drive dogs and we see this. It can be several small things the dog gets ramped up from or things that on their own are not a problem but together stack and are. You may get a redirection or hyped up behavior.

We all have off days or set backs. Maybe the speed of the new changes is getting to him & he needs a slower pace of change ( not that it's unrealistically fast just that he has a lot to take in that's new) . It took my rescue cat a year to be really fully relaxed .

I'm only able to talk and give stritches to my boyfriends african grey. when giving him scritches he will "bite" like that too, I think it's his way of saying "hey I don't want that there" lol. I love african greys and budgies :)

I've had my Grey for 18 years now and he has spells of being needy and wants lots of head scratches which can end in a bite, I've put it down to him thinking he is the boss as its me indulging him and he also has bad moods for no apparent reason. I can loose his attention for a week or so he becomes distant but then he gets back to being himself I think its greys being greys.🙂

There are cameras, like baby monitering cameras you could set up, so if anything weird happens you can go back and check footage.

Aww he is so sweet. MYbe something scared him and he try to attack whatever maybe a bat or animal. He will hopefully get back to being a good bird without the biting. Or aggressive behavior.

Any advice / videos for birds that want head scratches but you want them to step up??? My cockatiel i just adopted from a rescue always puts her head down expecting head scratches but i want her to step up. If i don’t she will bite me.

Three things...... 1) That wasn't a bite. It's what I call an "admonishment chomp". They're not given to injure but rather to express displeasure or in an attempt to establish a little better positioning in the "pecking order". 2) That looks like a small, not too deep, puncture.....so, just keep an eye out for infection or abscess formation. 3) Although the injury doesn't look too bad or deep, it is where the main muscle mass that moves the upper beak is situated so chewing and manipulation might be a bit sore going for ol' Bean. Consider making up a little special food that requires no chewing and can be fed in "beads" from a 10cc syringe. Hot, cooked oatmeal A jar of veggie or fruit baby food A dollop of smooth peanut butter Put all ingredients into a blender and puree adding hot water until it the consistency of Portland cement or brownie mix. This was a staple for my assorted birds as a wonderful source of extra calories and bonding, (I found I could even add baby food that had meat as well). Also......I'd do a careful inspection of that outdoor aviary looking for broken wires or exposed nails, screws and fasteners, since that does look like puncture injury. Now, I don't know what other birds were in that aviary, so, it is possible it was inflicted by another bird, (which might be the reason he was hanging from the roof throughout the night), but, you can better assess that.

My grey used to click for different reasons. Sometimes it was positive (as a greeting or just before a treat) and sometimes negative (if it was something he was scared off he's growl and click and the hackles would go up.) I'd have to read his body language to tell the difference between the two.

My grey clicks like that as well and for her it's a a curser for aggression if I try to pick her up. She's not often a biter but you know she's upset when that happens. Interesting that other greys do it too

My male grey parrot did the same clicks and it was usually a cursor for aggression too.

My Catalina Macaw does the “FU” feathers thing for seemingly no reason (Or for something super small) and when that happens and she is on my hand it usually leads to a bite of varying intensity. I am having so much trouble keeping my cool when she bites and latches on and wont let go. Why Amelia Why!?
