Haha, this was a fantastic video. My 7-year-old asked me why I was laughing so much, and I told him different ways he can live a life he'll regret. He was also laughing but locked in. 😂 Reverse psychology at its finest.

Living a life true to myself since 2011, despite all the opposition, is incredibly hard. It’s still a struggle. Today is one of those days when I feel like breaking down. I tried to sleep but couldn't. I felt so low on energy, but a few minutes ago, I jumped out of bed, made an instant coffee, and opened my journal. I started writing, started organizing. Suddenly, I got some energy and decided to watch a Ali Abdaal video I got a notification for the other day. Here I am. Not successful yet, not even close, but hopefully soon.

Great video. I was a process control engineer (just retired 2/21/24) I would always stress test my projects just to make sure it would work under all conditions. Also depending on the government. Hey Ali, thanks for your works. I wouldn't search for this video, but watched because of subscription. I notice, that people un-learned how to form communities and friendships (it either happens "naturally somehow" or more often it doesn't happen). I'd like a video explaining how exactly to be that person "gluing" things together, i.e. how to make a difference between people "just meeting each other" and people "being a strong supportive community to each other". (I've read your book.)

To guarantee a life of regret, prioritize work over everything else, follow societal expectations, suppress feelings, let friendships fade, avoid growth, prioritize instant gratification, never apologize or forgive, avoid happiness, set strict rules for happiness, and lack intentionality in life design.

The problem I have is that my parents depend on me financially, sometimes even my sibling too. I'm in the software industry so if I don't have any up-to-date skills, I'll be replaced. So I kind of have to prioritize work because the economy sucks.

Of course my biggest regret is first in ranking. Why do we care so much about what our loved ones say? Why do we let others define our life, hiding it behind a shield of "oh, i'm just a people pleaser what else could i do".... Staying where we were always told is the easiest way, but I wouldn't live a happy and meaningful life sticking to it. It's time to stop mourning about "we're too old" to do something, when a lot of people who are, in fact, too old for a change, regret not taking a path they liked when they had the opportunity too. I'm 25 and I say I'm too old for stuff I'm definitely NOT. Let's start building our dream life.

People, especially my school friends, have never really understood what my life is like and what my priorities are. They believe, and not incorrectly, that I often work quite hard, but this nearly always leads to the assumption that I just want to achieve high and waste my life without happiness. However, this is simply not true. I find the joy of living every day, whether that's just sitting in the sun in breezy sunrise/sunset times, just being happy and having happy thoughts, or it's hanging out with my school friends and just talking freely, and I get quite annoyed at certain peoples' (what could be called) naivety. I wouldn't be surprised if I was happier than 99% of those people.

Some of this advice is great for someone who has found comfort or live in an environment of abundance/privilege. For the rest of us, who leave in less than ideal circumstances, we have to work extra hard just to get by and more if we want to live comfortably. I'd rather die knowing I eliminated my family's generational poverty than the memories of spending time with friends. The rest is good advice though.

Maybe the hard work is what we need to stay grounded and be humble and not corrupt our minds/spirit, and by "ending generational poverty" we actually create more harm than good in the long run. - "Hard times create strong men.
