    the Picasso varieties are also new generation, I got a purple white one, it got some white "tulips" and some that are more 'soft purple' (not deep at all) And they brake white strands from the start. Same with the pink one I got for my mom it got a white soft share around it's bottom and soft pink at it's tips of the flower if self.

    I love this Lilly! What time of year would you plant bulbs in the ground for the Calla lily and gladioli?

    Hi, I just bought 6 tubers from you, and after researching online I planted mine just slightly proud of the surface, with a thin layer of mixed hort. grit and perlite under. But now I see you are planting yours BELOW the compost surface. What is correct??

    Hello sir, just a quick question. I've just planted mine now, March, indoors in a conservatory. Have I planted too soon? I'd appreciate your advice as this is only my second year gardening. Thanks.

    Will a damaged tuber, (spade through it) grow?

    Hi Kaz, i'd recommend placing the tuber in a shallow tray and roughly cover with compost, water and then wait. They'll either root and throw cuttings or they may not.

    I just bought some (early March) - can I plant them now in pots? I read elsewhere not to plant before the frost has passed - i.e. late May. Should the pots go outdoors or indoors?

    I think they are frost tender so if you grow them in pots you can take them inside to avoid the frost. You can dig them up from the garden as well to overwinter but that is more hassle. You can also mulch them and they may survive outside. I've done that with various bulbs which are frost tender in Scotland but invariably some do end up dying during a cold winter. As houseplants you can plant them anytime.

    Thanks for this. I live in Cambridge, UK so it can get quite cold in winter but actually wasn't 2014-15 and 2015-16 winters. Hardly any below zero days those 2 winters since I bought the plants. I dug up most of the plants and kept them in my unheated greenhouse all winter. They've multiplied and I now have a lot. Some that I missed digging up have also reappeared. I'm expected a different story this spring though as there were some long and very cold spells this winter so I suspect any I left outside won't reappear. I'm just hoping the ones Ieft in my greenhouse will be okay.

    That is good to hear. Maybe i will just buy one calla lily bulb since they multiply and see how that goes in a pot and just bring it in to the semi enclosed doorway for winter.

    How do the stones help with the drainage exactly?

  • @theuglykwan

    @theuglykwan

    Water drains more easily compared to more compacted soil, there are more air pockets and keep the access to the drainage holes open, they absorb less water. Consider if the pot is rootbound then the roots at the bottom of the pot filled with just soil could be sitting in water depending on the water level. If there are stones at the bottom the roots won't grow down that far.

    It lets the roots+ soil to get air underneath = better drying = less risk on moldy roots.....Just basic physics.. If you keep a plastic pot with drainage holes on a dining plate you air block them.. so to be "step ahead" with Zantedeschia you give the tip of the roots some breathing space, as it was mentioned in the video, This calla spreads it's root like mad (Due to being a seasonal "bush" actually when you study it's size and place it grows and that it likes a winter sleep, so it can shed off leafs that are to big for the bulb or "onion" to handle.. )

    I just get lush leaves, no flowers. Any tips?

  • @JParkersBulbs

    Hello! As your Calla Lily has lush leaves but no flowers, it's quite possible it is not blooming due to too much nitrogen. If you are using a fertiliser, switch to one that is higher in phosphorus than nitrogen to make your Zantedeschia bloom. I hope this helped :)
