    So delighted that you love my videos. I generally don't use grow lights. I have a shed like room in my backyard where I keep my seed trays until the seedlings sprout. As soon as they pop out, I move them outside either in filtered sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

    Am growing my watermelons in containers, but I am using Clothing Bins, so any way, I used soil mix, sand, perlite & all purpose fertilizer, mix it all up and wholla the plants are growing up a steel mesh trellis, and I got about 10 watermelons in different stages of growth. I planted the Black Diamonds, and also Catalops. Watermelons are costing close to $10 each, and the cantaloupes are all most $5.00 each. So w/these 2 plants growing really well, I got like about $200 in Watermelons & Cantaloupes alone. Watering them, well I had a gallon jug, so what I did, I cut off the top, and I got my sprayer w/fertilizer and aimed it into the gallon jug, and counted 15 seconds, then I poured the water from the gallon jug into a measuring cup. The total of amount of water was 1 3/4 Cups . So for each plant I put the sprayer to the base of the plant, and count to 15. This method saves me a lot of water, before I was using the gallon container until I got the Whopping Water Bill. Now I only use about 2.5 Gallons of water at the 15 second rate, for 30 different plants. W/the grass that I cut each week, I use that as mulch and I mean thick mulch, but I make a "cup" around the base of the plants to put water in, each time I water I make sure my sprayer has water soluble fertilizer of 20-20-20. So far so good. I am very please w/the garden growing, this is my 2nd year, I kept a log as to what I did each year. Please note that on Watermelons and Cantaloupes, the fruit does not grow near the stem of the plants, the vines have to grow I would say about 5 feet for water melons and about 6-7 feet for Cantaloupes, that is what has happen to my plants. Each Watermelon & Cantaloupe has a nylon mesh tied on each side, one side higher than the other, to hold up the weight of the fruit, I don't want the stem going into the fruit to have to put any stress by the weight of it. Lastly, because my back yard is so small, I had to go "UP" w/my plants, and I did not want to dig up what yard I have so I think that for me, Watermelons & Cantaloupes grow better on a Steel Mesh trellis growing upwards not only because of the weight but be cause the bees do not have to fly so low to the ground to pollinated them. Could be that is why I got so many watermelons growing on the steel mesh trellis because of the bees flying high. I hope this post helps someone to at least have an idea as to how to grow these fruits and save money. Thank You.

    Hi...your videos are so useful for container gardening. Can you tell me which grow bag brand you are using also the nursery pot brand? If you could make one video on how to make your own potting mix also will be useful. I am depending on packed potting mixes from nursery for now

  • @TowardGarden

    @TowardGarden

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi, so glad you found my videos useful. For grow bags, most of these brand discontinue after a while so I usually don't stick to a specific brand. I have purchased different brands and pretty much they all do the job. As long as they are heavy duty thickened they should be ok. It is same for plastic pots. Bloem and The HC Companies are examples of brand I have used. I also reuse plastic flower buckets from chain grocery stores for free and add holes for drainage. For potting mix, I like your suggestion. Since plants require different media to grow, I need to find out how I can combine different options for a general purpose mix. All my videos contain the mix I use to make my own potting soil so for now you can refer to them. I appreciate your comment and happy gardening!

  • @TowardGarden

    @TowardGarden

    2 ай бұрын

    If you are keeping the seed pots inside, the the room temperature should be enough for germination. Heat mat is only required if the temperature is below 70F. For the light, yes you definitely need a source of light. A sunny window sill is much better than grow lights. If you want to use grow light make sure they are high power/output ones (200 Watt equivalent or higher amzn.to/3VpwW8y ). My choice would be to expose them to 4-6 hours of morning sunlight in a clear tote or a cold frame. You can bring them inside in cold nights. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

    It is always better to check the pH level of the soil before adding the garden lime. If your fertilizer contains calcium, then adding garden lime is not needed and is optional. • @TowardGarden

    @TowardGarden

    The grow bags yes, but this wire trellis for sure won't be enough to support a 20 lbs watermelon. I 'd say for those you will need a heavy duty trellis such as cattle fence (www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/ok-brand-handy-panel-8-ft-l-x-50-in-h ) and also lumber (1x1) instead of bamboos. Once the melons started to get heavier, use stockings to support the weight. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

    Is it ok to plant sugar snap peas with or near watermelons? Thank you for all of your videos 🙂

  • @TowardGarden

    @TowardGarden

    2 ай бұрын

    Short answer is yes, definitely. Peas are nitrogen fixing plants meaning they take nitrogen from air and store it i their roots to be released into soil. It is ideal to plant peas before planting watermelons so that watermelon can benefit from nitrogen rich soil to grow leaves. There is one concern to be cautious. Too much nitrogen will result in a rapid leaves growth and plants will struggle to produce flowers and fruits. If you see your plants grow just leaves and you don't see flowers, add phosphorous (P) rich fertilizers to your soil to fix it. The middle number of NPK in your fertilizer should be high. You can use Tomato foods amzn.to/3P4whWc or amzn.to/437FD9u . Hope this helps. happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!😊
