I grow tulips here in MN, in the ground and leave them year around. I dig them up every 3-5 years to separate them but plant most back in the same area. They return year after year and multiply fast. Have done this for several years without any problems. Yes some do rot and some get eaten, but I still have a good display every year. Oh yeah, about those dried up ones you throw out. Some of those will grow if you soak them in water, or as I sometimes do, put them in a damp area so the melting snow and early spring rains keep them wet. They can sometimes come back if not to far gone, even planted in pots. I treat my daffodils the same way.

A good way to deal with fungus/mold on bulbs (including veg tubers) is Stearamine. A cousin to Bartender's Friend, bar sanitizing water solution. Can be bought and used like a dip, then air dry the bulb - and the mold and schmuck will be killed off - while the bulb remains unharmed. Further protection happens in the soil (soil blight one-celled virus, powdery mildew, fungus, molds, etc) will also protect the bulb during its growth.

I've never grown tulips because I thought they were perennials and I live in an apartment so I didn't want to spend money on something that I would have to leave in the ground if I moved. But the pots are a great idea. I'm in 6a so I'll have to try and remember to try it this fall. If you did a little video reminding us in the fall I'd be grateful cause I know I won't remember lol

Actually you can buy them now (sometimes you can find them cheaper then in the fall) keep them in the fridge for a couple months and then plant them right before spring. The bulbs need that cold period (that’s why people plant them in fall in the ground), but in pots you can do them now on a balcony and let them overwinter. Just do as he said about watering and they should come up for you in spring.

Great video! Thank you! I've done these in pots and half whiskey barrels for a long time now and the display is dramatic and stunning! I have pots on tables and steps and porch and whiskey barrels on the edge of my back patio pad. It's so awesome to see the first crocus bulbs emerge and then each layer continue to bloom. I've had flowers for months and it's so enjoyable. I remember the first year I tried it and was so excited and it still thrills me! I've shared it with so many people and they are so surprised! It's a great way to welcome Spring and so easy! I actually and still putting some in this month too! I had them all planted and then....there was a sale! lol I have another 200+ to plant! :)

You could put a straw or stick in between the bulbs on the bottom layer than add soil, than add next layer bulbs and sticks so you can give the lower bulbs a more direct route up. Then pull those sticks out after you're done making your "lasagna ". Looks great. Love your videos. Thank you

  • @Fg4e

I use Honey in water to dip my bulbs to clean them. It's organic, a natural antibiotic wash. Let air dry and store like ur onions. Long narrow mess bags. Separate out the baby bulbs. To save money you can bake your own garden dirt in an old or foil 13x9 pan at 350*f for about 10mins. This will sterilize your soil. In warmer states you can bury ur bulbs for storage just below the Frost line. But in Ohio or Michigan u might have to go 8ft lol so a garage in a pot is better lol. I love the lasagna pot idea 💡 Thanks for another great video ❣️

I live in zone 5a northwest Illinois and plant my tulips in hardware cloth boxes in the ground to protect them from squirrels and voles.. I make a removable cover that is taken off once they break through the soil and replace it once the foliage dies back. They return for 5 or 6 seasons. Box tops are hidden by other perennial plants. I might try adding some muscari into the tops of this boxes this fall.

I'm in zone 9b/10a in Central Florida and I have had good luck with daylillies and irises. I have successfully propagated my daylillies from the harvested seeds. I just have to keep the rabbits from eating the tender leaves until the plant gets more mature. I use a quarter inch hardware cloth fence with stakes about 2' high around the beds. The squirrels are now chewing through the fiber mesh cloth I placed on top of my garden plants in my grow bags now and I need to probably put a piece of wire mesh cloch around the pot edges, so my project tomorrow....

What is going on will all of these other channels, deceiving their audiences with carefully crafted props that are meant to give the illusion of a "garden hack", but in actuality, NO you can't grow an apple tree out of an apple, an orange tree out of an orange, or a banana tree, by smearing aloe vera on both ends and cramming it into the dirt. I'm dead serious. This is a legitimate problem, especially when you have people genuinely interested in gardening become discouraged and quit, believing they are getting it wrong, when the issue is with these predatory channels spreading misinformation like fire. -End Rant, Thank you for your service.
