How to Grow Mushrooms: Dub Tub Method

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This method to grow mushrooms is one of my long time favorites because it was my first bulk method after learning BRF cakes. I used to use a cheese shredder to shred 4 BRF cakes until i learned how to use quart of rye grain spawn and it worked every time.
In this video i could have gotten a bigger harvest if i would have used a sawdust substrate like Agrocybe aegerita prefers but as you can see they still tolerate the coco coir.

    Lightly pack down your substrate before adding the top layer, pack a little tighter around the edges to help guard against side pins. Very lightly pack the top layer down after its applied

    @@wilkiedilkieagree 100%. In fact most tek methods don’t have enough fae which equals subpar results. I always try to replicate Mother Nature conditions for mushrooms as well as cannabis. Think about it: mushrooms grow outdoors, not confined in a box indoors. I create those same conditions regardless of the tek. High humidity, fresh O2 and temps similar to Mother Nature ie: high 70s day low 70s night. Led lighting on timers for day. Room humidity between 65-80%. Not everyone has a dedicated room for this but if you can you are in full control of the ambient environment. Even doing cakes in sgfc have huge yields when done in these rooms. No matter what tek you do, always try to mimic the outdoor environment and maintaining those conditions. 😉

    @@astbrnrd I'm a beginner too, but thinking about it, I'd presume that field capacity wouldn't be the same after the mycelium has started fruiting, and especially after harvesting. Mushrooms are 90% water, so if you've just harvested a bunch of mushrooms, that means the water that *was* in your substrate is now inside all those mushrooms. So if you want more mushrooms (i.e., another flush/harvest), you'll need to introduce much more water back into the substrate (i.e., rehydrate it by dunking/soaking). I hope this makes sense! 😊

    If you use pop corn as a grain spawn you won’t even need a pressure cooker. Just steam bath the jars of corn for 2 hours. The substrate is just pasteurized in the bucket with hot water and adding the spawn doesn’t need to be in front of a flow hood. So it is a very easy relaxed method!

    Can i grow white button mushrooms this way, because they need around 90% humidity of what i heard, and at the fruiting stage the second lit is only resting on the other which results in less humidity if im not wrong. What can i do to keep it more humid, so i can grow them? Also thanks for the great and detailed video 😊

  • @SporenSprout

    Yes it would work but white button mushrooms require specialized compost substrate and a casing layer to successfully fruit. As long as you use the correct substrate it would work.

    hey man just wondering if this could possibly work with morel mushrooms. idk if you have any experience with them but just thought id ask. i think wood would be needed in the substrate to start anyways

  • @SporenSprout

    @SporenSprout

    It would possibly work but you have to have a freshly bred strain of black morel and I believe composted substrate is best. It may be a good idea to add viable rye grass seeds to the final substrate and allow grass to grow in the tub as well.

    Came here per your suggestion on another video haha. Wondering if there's a reason you don't put holes in the second tub you use as a lid? I see a lot of talk about needing fae and having the air filters in the holes etc etc

  • @SporenSprout

    @SporenSprout

    Ай бұрын

    You can definitely put a few holes in the top tub and cover with micropore tape if you want. Iv grown this way so many times and it works great so I never added holes, I just open it 3 times per day to air it out. If you are gone on vacation then the holes would be helpful.

    Love how clear and detailed this was. However, I'm wondering about the specifics of what you meant at the very end when you said "after harvest you can dunk the substrate for 4 hours and get a second flush." Do you or can you talk more specifically about this in another one of your videos?

  • @SporenSprout

    I wonder why I get that question all the time! It’s very easy just add some water to the tub and let it soak and then dump out the excess and fruit again. Or remove the substrate cake and soak it and then place it back in the bin.

    It doesn’t matter if you pat down the sides, the substrate shrinks while growing and the side pins will come after it shrinks and exposes the sides.

    Great video, I have a question. If the tub is completely closed while the mycelium colonises the substrate how does the mycelium breathe if there is no air flowing into the box? And with the other tub on top of the colonised substrate how does it breathe also?

  • @SporenSprout

    @SporenSprout

    Жыл бұрын

    The lid is not a tight seal even when clicked into place. It is fine how it is for 6-10 days during colonization. You can add a couple holes to the lid and cover with tape and that’s fine too. The top tub is removed 3-5 times daily to fan and mist to replace the air and it works fine. You can add holes to the top bin if you want as well.

    Hi I have another question for you! Does this tub method need a specific environment like the greenhouse you built in your other video? Does it need regulated humidity and air exhaust? If I plan to do it in a basement where light is low should I get LED strips? Thank you so much for your response :)

  • @SporenSprout

    @SporenSprout

    11 ай бұрын

    You don’t need any grow tents or special environment, the tub provides the environment and you provide fresh air by fanning it 3-5 times per day and replenishing moisture on the top of the bin. Yes 1-2 LED strips in the basement is perfect.
