Thank you Helen, they are the best I've grown so far, which I think is down to the new allotment's position and green waste compost.

Think I may have planted some Casablanca garlic on the same day as you. All my garlic succumbed to rust in 2021 (together with many others) and was too unsightly for plaiting. This year I planted around 300 cloves of about 6 varieties, mainly saved stuff starting in late October then through November as my local garden centre reduced them down to 75% off. I didn't like the look of Wilko's tiny Casablanca garlic bulbs this year, then only in December I discovered that The Range were selling 3 packs of very large bulbs (2 per pack), still in excellent condition for £5 and they provided 72 plump cloves for planting. I split them before departing for my allotments as my wife doesn't appreciate being given a handful of muddy reject runts on my return ! Will have to see how my harvest compares with yours. P.S. Also have a three plots with total area of 600 m2 (having downsized from over 2,000 m2 lost to housing development).

That's a serious amount of garlic David and my respect for running three plots, I know how much time it takes to grow and prepare everything at the end of the season. I also had some rust last year but it wasn't too bad. Let me know how you get on.

@@veggieplot My late planted Casablanca garlic are now nearly all through and with a better showing than the other varieties of cloves planted in Oct/Nov. Just hope they grow to a decent size.

Hi, i did this spacing 2 years ago and had a great crop. Ive improved the soil since then so I planted a bit closer together this time, i also used mycorrhizal fungi to see if it helps get fatter bulbs. Did you say that soft neck can send up scapes if they are stressed? I ask because i bought germidor soft neck and everyone had scapes, i thought that they had sold it wrong😂. I will see for sure if they are hard neck as i planted the home saved cloves this time. New sub. Book looks great.👍👌

Hey Nick, I can't remember what I said although now I want to re-watch the video! Hardneck garlic do send up scapes and although softneck can do when stressed, it's not the norm. I'm not sure if the mf will make a difference but I'd be interested to know how you get on.

Do you add any amendments? My two varieties have just been pulled up and very, very poor, with so much rust. They didn't even form proper garlic bulbs - just a sort of globe, the size of a chip shop pickled onion. The leeks have rust too. I'll have to plant in potato buckets next year and don't want to waste so much space, as I'd given over a whole 8 x 4 raised bed in the garden in anticipation of a harvest to last us all year. Won't give up just yet, but it's disheartening.

Ah, that can be disheartening and I feel for you. we wait all winter and then, sometimes, it just doesn't go to plan. Sometimes they don't split because they haven't had a long enough cold period over the winter. I've seen some people store them in a fridge for a couple of months before planting out in early winter, perhaps that's worth a try.
