Here in PA, I plant my garlic in October. I've been doing this about 4 years now. A farmer friend got me doing this. It's the best thing! Thank you for the tips!

I'm in NEPA. Do you do soft or hard neck? Also, do you water when they are dormant?

Hard and no I don't water them and make sure to cover them with leaves or mulch to protect from freeze, thaw...did you plant some?
@tianamarie989

@@debrakrause7570 yes, I did both, first time so I wanted to see which one did the best in my area. So far both are growing. I read that you do a light layer of mulch or leaves before freezing and then after freezing put more on. Something about mold?
@debrakrause7570

@@tianamarie989 So far I haven't had any problem with mold but in the Spring if it stays too wet you have to get the leaves off once there's no more chance of freezing
I planted mine today 😁 .. wasn't aware of the manure requirement though ... and as only 1" deep on free-draining soil, I will spread some compost over .. thx Tony, for all the good advice

To plant your bulbs in spring time , just put your garlic seed bulbs that you have drying through the winter into the fridge about a month or month and a half before planting outside in the early spring , they will still bulb up for a nice harvest in the fall

Thanks for video Tony. I have never been able to grow garlic for some reason, probably something I’m doing or not😂 but now I’ve watched this I have a better idea of what I have done wrong, planting at wrong time for one or overwatering. Here in the Southern Hemisphere (New Zealand), it is normal practice to plant garlic on the shortest day (June 22) and reap it on the longest (December 22). Last year I planted my garlic late August - as recommended by a commercial grower - and had a great crop. This year I am going to do the opposite and plant early - Easter to be exact - April 19 - 22

Very useful programme. Though you are from West your pronunciation and narration is wonderful. Rewuest more programmes on garden vegetables
I had no luck with my "pukka seed" garlic bulbs last year - the (European/French Wight) bulbs got attacked big-time by some root aphids. As I saw the leaves yellowing, I watered them more thinking it was a water deficiency problem, which I think the pests thrived on. In a separate patch as an experiment I planted some ordinary grocery bought purple Spanish garlic. Out of a dozen or more cloves I got 2 plants which each produced a small garlic bulb to harvest. For the rest, the foliage died back completely and for the winter I mulched the plot with sheet cardboard topped with wood shredding. But surprise, surprise, in the past week or so, strong garlic clumps are springing up from those hidden bulbs poking thu the decomposed cardboard. They look really healthy so I am just gonna wait & see if I get a proper harvest, they certainly have an early start!
growing mind now 14 oct hope i gets some next year first time for me

I live in south central Texas and it rarely stays cold enough to satisfy the temperature requirement for garlic, but I do have 'trick'. I put the whole heads of garlic in a brown paper bag and store them in the fridge for a month. I've only done this for Spring planting but it does work. The winters where I live are too wet for onions and garlic to stay in the ground.
@meme852369
2 жыл бұрын
I'm also in Texas, you can still grow it without a cold phase it will just be a single bulb instead of separate ones
Hi, I'm in US zone 7a and I watched your video because I'll be planting garlic for the first time, October 6th, 2020. I'm putting them into a 50 gal container around the edges with a kale in the center about 6 " apart. I'm hoping the kale (Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch with a 30" spread) won't crowd the garlic. The garlic is Red Inchelien. The pots are in the sunniest spot in my yard ( i have tons of Pecans) but soon the trees will defoliate and I'll have more sun. I hope I'm doing it right.
I'm growing garlic this year, 2019 & leeks in fall/winter, zone 8a, USA. I don't know why I haven't before since I put garlic in just about everything we eat. I'm also taking your advise on the fall/winter onions too! I ordered 1000 seeds today of Texas 1015Y, sweet slicing onions, like a Spanish onion, that I'll sow indoors & grow my own transplants. I did tons of research after your suggestions to get the ideal onion for my area and everything else I needed to know. I didn't realize growing them from seed took so long....over 175 days :-o but it will definitely be worth the effort! Thanks for the video

Thank you for your recordings. I love them. In the years to come I plane to have an organic vegetable garden. Do you use any chemicals? And in case you don't how do you mix your vegetables, that you don't need pesticides. Do you use fertilizer? What do you do to minimize weeding? Do you use Epsom Salt in your garden? Thank you very much.
