How to grow and harvest hazelnuts (filberts) at home, successfully!

Growing hazelnuts (filberts) at home or on a small farm can be easy, but it's different from how it's done on large commercial nut orchards. We grow our hazelnuts as multi-stemmed bushes, not as trees with a single trunk. This allows us to harvest them by hand as soon as they are ripe, before the jays and squirrels have a chance to strip the trees. Unlike other nuts, hazelnuts ripen in summer, not fall. Watch as Michael Dolan explains how we grow and harvest hazelnuts on a small organic farm.

    @@moniquevandeplas5210 Missouri. Unfortunately all of my trees died this summer. Too hot and dry dry dry. I kept them watered but we are 10" behind on rain so the surrounding soil just sucked up the water. I was even watering with PVC pipes under the plants. I had 2 year old apply trees that were well-rooted die this summer.

    Superb Very education. I live in the UK had on of these Red leaf variety in the front garden, used to cut it back as it would ground fast and up to about 10-12 foot high. One day a Cypriot friend informed me it's a Hazelnut tree./bush, while pulling a spout from the bush. This post confirmed it's true. I will try and harvest at the right time. Looks like there are about 20 spouts on each branch, with about 12 branches, expect about 240 nuts. Thank you for sharing.

    Recently watched a documentary about ancient peoples, and hazelnut was found to be a staple all across Europe for over 8000 years. Millions of calories would be gathered and they cleared land to grow the bushes.

    I moved to Arizona from Washington and decided to try hazelnuts down here (8b) to see if they will grow. I planted them 3 years ago, pretty sure I bought them from y'all, and so far my trees are about 4ft high and I see my first nuts (although its just one little clutch lol.)

    I managed to nab some large hazelnuts (what I grew up calling filberts) and they were already brown. I thought it was odd that no squirrels had gotten them yet. I wanted to try growing some more trees. But for some reason the seeds inside were not fully developed. I'm bummed. Does make me wonder if the squirrels somehow knew they were bad. lol I figured they had just not finished up with the large English walnut trees.

    Are you going to have a video on how to start Hazelnut trees? Can you start trees from cuttings or just by planting the nut? You got me excited now.

    Черенок можно укоренить , но он должен быть толще большого пальца и длиной с руку . И сажать такой толстый черенок нужно за 1 месяц до распускания почек , и нужен частый полив в течении всего лета

    I have always found the trees to give spurs, which you can split out of season. Just done one. Nice to obtain two trees for one, and that will continue

  • @burntridgenursery591

    @burntridgenursery591

    15 feet is close enough, but you'll need to plant two different varieties for cross-pollination. Good partners for Theta would include Jefferson, Dorris, Felix, Yamhill, York, and most other named varieties.

    Okay so your in The Pacific North West. Around Sequim, P.A., Forks, Port Townsend, Silverdale, and Seattle. My Hazel Shrub doesn't have Any Nuts And I was wondering if I could take a Cutting and Propagate another 1 That way, So I could get some Nuts. And if so How?

  • @burntridgenursery591

    @burntridgenursery591

    If your existing hazelnut is not producing nuts, you may need to plant another for cross-pollination. The pollinator has to be genetically different, so propagating a cutting (cloning) your existing tree would not be sufficient. A hazelnut seedling, or any clonal named variety (other than what you may have already) would be the best pollinator.

    It is hopeless, the squirrels eat them while they are green. Way before they are edible to humans. They do not care they are wasting immature nuts. Just grab anything before another one can!
