    Stupid question, I was at the grocery store yesterday and seen that the grocery had put out the seasonal bag of assorted nuts and bag of hazlenuts, the kind that require a nut cracker and pick. Anyone know if they could be plantable and viable.

    I’ve raised and released two squirrels so far and have spent my little “fortune” on hazelnuts from Amazon ever since. They’ve gotten so expensive, thank goodness Market Basket is selling them a couple bucks cheaper per pound(!) with Thanksgiving and Christmas here. But I’ve started a bunch of nuts, and hopefully in the Spring I’ll be rewarded with sprouted hazelnuts! I’m so excited! Something to leave all my new friends. We have a very cute Red Squirrel with just a stub for a tail, we call Stubby. He looks like a really fast hamster as he chases the grey guys from his territory, and it hasn’t deterred him at all from what we’ve seen. So funny to see a “fast hamster” tho. And I worry about his loss and fears as he seems to prefer staying under cover. I provide small pieces of fleece from the stuffing in old little couch pillows I have or buy cheap. I put a bunch in a basket and it’s all gone in a few days as we watch them carry it home to make their dreys and holes comfy. We’re retired so we are constantly entertained by our little friends. Thank you for this super video to spread your helpful knowledge.

    thanks for the video, my teenage son is wanting to grow some nut trees,and I know where there are 4 of these Hazelnut trees way up on the mountain ,the Forest service planted them maybe 20 some years ago,I was up there bow hunting and found them one fall day ,I could see that a Black Bear had been climbing them and breaking the limbs down and eating the nuts,they must really love them because he had been in each tree breaking the limbs down so he could lay up in the crotch of the tree and eat the nuts he pulled down .I diddn't get to stab that Bear ,but we have plenty of them and they love eating the plumbs and apples from the trees next to my home,so I don't have to go very far to find them when season opens.we will try and start some of these trees ,thanks for the video.

  • @stevendeatley4878

    @stevendeatley4878

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@klugscheier1644 yes.you can eat bear.and I do,and personally I like it much better than deer or elk,but for the flavor ,I think moose is tops.bear has much more fat content and I think this is what gives it a better flavor .just remember bear meat should always be cooked well,because they often carry the same parasite as pork.I like bear canned ,it's just like canning venison ,90 min.at 10 psi.for a quart and 75 min.For a pint jar.I have several quarts of venison and only 1 quart of bear .left over from hunting season.when I was a young boy I would hunt with my hounds all year and never jump a bear,but now the black bear population has expoled here in South West Va.when the weather warms up.I will see them everyday here often I see several each day.I will buy bleach each week just to mix with water in a spray bottle to spray my trash cans with to keep them out of my trash .they hate to smell of bleach ,bear fat rendered down and canned in mason jars ,makes much better oil or shortining for makeing bread or biscuits or cornbread than anything you can buy in a store .my little 7 year old granddaughter is across the road sleeping on her daddy's couch wrapped in a bear skin tonite.she is a typical girl in that respect.she is always cold.lol but she loves to hunt and trap and fish.I know some folks will say that bear meat is tough.it can be strong ,if you run it a long ways with hounds I think it has a stronger flavor ,than one you just ambush ,but a hog is much the same.we usta kill and work up 6 to 8 hogs a day and if you run them or don't kill him right off,with your first shot .the meat will be stronger flavored than a animal that has been stressed .that's why when we would kill our hogs ,we would separate the one to be killed from the others .

    Is it «Corylus avellana» if so, Jeez the tree is high. In Québec (Canada) I've never saw one that high. The average zone is 4, could it be why.

    @@GrowWithKit hmm .. I forgot that I wrote to you Thank you, I made a research and I think that I finally find out that ours is «corylus americana» But, since I think that the hazels that are in our grocery store could be the fruit of «corylus avellana» I'm gonna try to make one sprout. Thanks again.

  • @GrowWithKit

    Best to wait for them to start falling from the tree & collect them when fully ripe. You can still try to grow them, i think they need a cold period to trigger germination. They grow like weeds here in the UK.

    @@GrowWithKit The problem is that i can't wait for them to fall off the trees, the wildlife take them all before they fall. They strip the trees in no time. Will i increase the chance if i put them in the freezer for a while, or just plant them during automne for the winter freeze?
