How To Grow A Mango Tree From Seed - Days 38 and 55

How to Grow A Mango Tree From Seed!
I've been asked by several viewers to start a Mango Tree from Seed Series and since I love growing from seed, I figured I may as well give it a go!
I have experimented with several different techniques over the last few months to get an idea of which methods work the best. In this video, I will provide you with an update on the 2 seeds that I started on 8/7/18, as well as the one started on 7/21/18.
A few learnings:
1 - Once the root is a few inches long - plant them into a good potting mix
2 - Keep the pot covered with some kind of clear wrap/bag to act as a mini greenhouse
3 - Open the bag daily for a few minutes to allow air flow
4 - Once the seed sprouts a plant, cut holes on the top of the bag to allow the humidity to drop down from 100% to help acclimate the plant to normal conditions.
5 - Once the young sapling outgrows the environment, remove the bag
I plan on keeping you updated on all of the seedlings progress from now until they either perish or flourish into fruit-producing trees.

Last month I ate an Mango after watching your vid, I never opened the stone before but I thought I could give it a try since I saw you do it. The video helped a lot! I removed the "paper" and put it in the soil with my avocado tree to see what would happen. I had to go away for 2 weeks and when i came back there was a small mango tree and it is still going strong! Thank you for the inspiration. Cheers.

Wish I could post photos in the comments, I followed you germination guidance on December 13th and on Jan 7th it was ready for soil and bag greenhouse. Over the last 3 days the sprout has more than tripled in size! And the leaves are starting to spread and unfold. At the rate it's growing I'm about to cut the corners off the bag to get it used to less humidity before it outgrows the bag-greenhouse. Mines an Ataulfo Mango (the yellow not the green) not sure if that affects growth rate or I just lucked out with an extra healthy seed. Thanks so much fir sharing this info one of the highlights of my holiday season and winter. 😀

Hi Rob! I have a total of three mangoes growing right now and out of the three, my first one is the first SUCCESSFUL mango that I have that's growing VERY WELL and looks similar to yours. Mine is a little over a year old now and she does growing in spurts. So far she's doing great and looking healthy! Yes, mine did the same as yours when it comes to the new leaves. The new leaves are reddish/pinkish and then after awhile they turn green! I noticed the newer leaves are a light green while the older leaves turn a dark green! I wish I had a way to show it to you here on youtube. As to watering though, I let the first inch of potting mix dry and I used the "second knuckle" test, which is when I stick my index finger down to the second knuckle and it's dry, I give it a good "drink!" I don't want it too wet or it could rot the roots! So far, so good! Keep up the GREAT work!! Looking AWESOME Rob!

Just curious Rob. What does your planting mixture consists of? Now I use one or two parts potting soil (planting mix, not pure soil) to 1 part desert sand and 1 part worm castings. I swear the worm castings help them out BIG-time!

Suggestion only that may work for you/others, I wear rubber gloves in hopes to keep all clean etc.! I use a 1/4 cup of 3% Peroxide, then add 3/4 of "distilled water" = 4 to 1 & I found that using a cut bottle, or using organic paper towel in ziplock bag with some air in it with the peroxide method, then I put under my kitchen sink, my mango seeds in a bottle & trying the paper towel method, as well to see which does best & so far the cut bottle is #1. Also I'm trying to grow some Plums as well, from an organic tree, but those are in a bag with paper towel & in the refrigerator for a month, but keep a close eye on all yr seeds & keep them from molding & keeping all sterilized & clean all around... But never tried an almond seed, for a tree, hmm interesting & good luck to ya, IF you try... Of course with my Avocado seeds, I use the same mixture with Peroxide & D. water & in the window with the most light, but I have a container to where I don't need toothpicks. The container that I'm trying is a sterilized star shaped Viloe Jelly container, just to see IF this will work, hey I get curious & bored while being home bound, so I will see, in tImE, lol... Good luck y'all & no worries IF it /they don't work out, tis life & we move on in the most positive ways as possible, but enjoy the seeds/plants that do grow for us, ;)...

This series is sooo cool. It helped me a lot on my mango seed. However my mango seed has sprouted very well but their is 3 roots and the stem just came out today is it normal to have 3 roots? It’s also a Asian mango so could that be the cause? Keep up the amazing work! 🇨🇦😃🥭

I have a ton of veggies growing - I guess I'm super due for an update! I just use a mix of regular cheap potting soil (indoors) and Garden soil (outside) and my homemade compost. So 50/50 mix of soil and compost. I do add my own fertilizer to it - crush egg shells, dried banana leaves, coffee grinds, and epsom salt - about 1 tablespoon per gallon when I'm potting it.

Sloppy Tuber I have found they prefer partial sunlight over direct sunlight (at least here in Texas). I think because they are tropical they don’t like dry heat in the upper 90’s or more. Since I’ve placed it in shade it’s done much better.

Yesterday I was changing the water in the bag and the plastic wrap for the mango seed when I accidentally broke a tiny piece of the end of the tap root off 😢 I'm seriously freaking out right now!!😖 My question is, will it still grow? I checked on it this morning I don't see any black on end tip & the seed is greener. Also the top of the seed where the stem is going to come out looks greener than yesterday. I've got it in the bag now where the tap root is completely in water. I tried looking this up on google but it wasn't much help😞. Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy the remainder of your 💚😊!

Kent and Kiett mangos almost always grow for me. Yellow Alphonso mangoes grow but never get very far. Haden mangoes always mold and die. Ataulfo do ok. But if you want a good mango tree in North America from the store Kiett and Kent seem to be the best... I have a 1 and 1/2 foot mango tree that’s a year old. Red skinned mangoes have a bad chance of growing because they are chilled to redden the skin and this kills the embryo or fatally wounds it. Get a green Kent or Kiett mango for a mono embryonic tree for a poly embryonic tree get a hatian mango
