HOW TO GRIP YOUR GOLF CLUB CORRECTLY | Paddy's Golf Tip #33 | Padraig Harrington

Спорт

Having the correct grip is the most important element of the golf swing as it is the only thing that attaches the player to the club face and allows the hands and wrists to function properly. I've previously released a "Paddy's Golf Tips" video to discuss the grip, but given some of the more recent feedback I've received to revisit the topic, I felt it was time to release a new video to focus more deeply on the topic.

Double finger over lap. It works on the driver swing wow. Laughed my head off when i first tried it. The ball was smashed, again and again, and again. On the fairway. Best driver shot tip ever for me. 🎉

Moving my pinky on to the top of index finger has made a world of difference for me. I used to put it between index and middle fingers but found that created a lot of tension to my grip. Thanks Paddy!

I have been watching many of your tips on utube. My game had gone up from 8 to 12 in 7 months. I read your tip on the grip and swing changed my grip to be more across the fingers in the right hand and improved my takeaway. Gradually with perseverance and practice my golf has improved. I shot a net 63 thanks to you and feel so confident in my swing now. Getting those fundamentals was key. Thank you for sharing your expertise and down to earth advice.

This was a game changer for me. I've always been afraid of changing my strong right hand grip (I'm right handed) after about 50 balls of the range. Getting used to, what I can only describe as 'the whip of the club head' balls started to fly high and long and not one pull hook ( Which has been my game destroyer) Thank you sir, and love the channel?❤

Cheers for the tips and vid Paddy! I went to the range today, and remembered from this: the right-hand life-line over the left thumb, applied this, and it did wonders for me. Not one slice or hook, and found it easier to compress the golf ball. Grip is so personal, and every golfer suits a different one, but this for me worked perfectly, a golden nugget. Thanks again.

Love watching you again after getting some lessons this fall that have deconstructed and overcomplicated and reworked my entire swing (and am now the most inconsistent I've been all year) and here I am watching your videos again thinking "he speaks my language!" and maybe it can simplify things again. Thanks Paddy, congrats on killing it this year! It's a gift having you do these videos. Weekend warriors!!! And a few shots of Fernet!

Padraig, with your irons, where are you looking at the ball, I found I hit better shots if I look at the front of the ball which helps me take a divot in front of the ball. Just curious where your eyes are looking over the ball.

I’m 42 and picked up golf a month ago and got the Callaway cosco set. After using the double overlap grip I’m hitting 235-310 yards consistently and on the fairways. I was forced to try this grip when I was hitting some balls at the range before my tee time and got a large blister on my right hand. Luckily I discovered Pattie giving driving tips on another channel a day before! WOW! I’m even using it for irons and having the same results, straight, and powerful shots. This guy is incredible!

This is both a great, and timely, video for me. My grip has been a bit off as of late. One thing o struggle with is the size of the grip. I’m 6’ 4”, and have pretty big hands. I played standard size for years, but have tried jumbo (seemed like I had zero wrist action), and now have midsize plus 4’s. I’m thinking I should go to mid size with no taper. Is there a standard (even ballpark), where the fingertips should touch? Hoping to get some feedback from anyone with knowledge regarding this. Ps. I wear a XXXL glove (Bionic). XXL in most other brands.

There are more and more videos here that emphasize gripping at the base of the fingers on the left hand. The interesting thing is if you refer to Ben Hogan's classic 5 Lessons book he instructs the reader to grip with the palm of the hand. I have used this method for over 40 years, lol! Working on re-training my hands after decades of muscle memory and pre-shot routine.

Something which makes a HUGE difference is establishing the grip with club in air, shaft vertical with elbows bent vs. resting club on the ground. When gripped in the air the action of lowering it and straightening the arms automatically creates counter-rotation inward of the forearms which stretches the muscles and connective tissues firming up the arm triangle and the grip without any muscular contraction. Hogan compared the feeling to wringing a towel. Something else Hogan did which makes a difference is when lowered applying enough downward pressure with the pad of the trail hand on the lead one to get the slack out of the lead arm to the same degree the force of the swing pulls it straighter. Do this when lining up to the ball and notice how much the club face moves.😊

Paddy, do you change your grip if the ball is further up in your stance such as for driver. I find that I have to take a more neutral grip with driver else by the time my club gets to the ball, my right arm straightens and I lose my angles and the right hand turns over and hit pull hooks. The ball is up by my left toes for driver.

I have this same issue and I solved in the same way. Trying to figure out if that’s okay. I hit clean golf shots by doing that but What I end up struggling with is since I change my grip for certain clubs I cant hit it where I am aiming, I hit it left and right more.

Fulcrum and Input force. Then you will grip it correctly just by intuition. Don’t change those rules and your clubhead (the output) will turn in to a monster.

Excellent information. Nothing better than hearing this from someone who has been on the tour. Absolute gold in all of these videos. Would you be able to do something on the start of the downswing and drills or the feels for the separation of the left shoulder from the chin. As I have got older I have started to move my head left in the downswing. I somehow seem to save it with timing and hand, but as the clubs get longer it gets more difficult to control. 🙏

Appreciate the video, although I think it would be even better if you slow way down, very slow, with a extreme closeup of your hands, painfully slow, extreme closeup. Of the hands, so slow and so close, that I can see the dirt under your nails. My question has to do with the right hand, and where exactly it fits on the shaft, is it at the tip of the fingers, or are you pushing with the the part of the palm, near the base of the fingers, typically the area that has callouses from ordinary work? Part of the problem is I appreciate your description, but I'm not even sure my grips are the right size, under my right hand, so I've got a lot of ways too go wrong. Thanks for all the great videos.
