How to Graft Avocado Trees in Containers

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Grafting season is here. This graft was done August 2020 in Southern California Zone 10a / 10b. I grafted a 3 month old avocado tree in a 1 gallon container. The scion came from a mature, 7 year old Reed avocado tree.

I watched so many grafting videos, This is far the best detailed info. Best of all you’re showing the result after several weeks. Some people may not agree grafting with young tree in container but what not to agree if you have successful result.

Great to watch your video and confirm that I didn't rush it when I grafted onto 1-2-month-old seedlings. I even tried my hand by grafting two thinner scions into a single cleft of a 1-year-old seedling. Holding my breath on that one. One thing I would recommend is to use aluminum foil, shiny side out, around the scion to reflect any unwanted hard light. Might be useful to those of us who can't store the seedling-graft in total shade.

I just grafted 6 plants in a pot (grafted on 2/14/2021)- but I’m unsure if I should leave them inside next to a window - with morning sun (I can lower the blinds to filter out the sun) or if I should put them outside (in the shade). It’s still kind of chilly in the Bay Area (CA), but I just wanted to get your insight?

  • @AJTheGraftMan

Nice video, couple of questions I bought a 4-5 foot grafted cold hardy avocado, but was told by local grower it may not be as cold hardy as advertised due to smell of leaves. If I buy another "cold" hardy avocado can I graft those 2 together. Meaning g can I take a branch from each other and try and graft to the other? 2. If I take a young seedling as you did in this video can I graft 2 different types of avocado to it if I put on at top as you did in video and another on side if bark is big enough?

  • @AJTheGraftMan

Yes you can graft the 2 together. Yes you can graft two different types of avocado onto one young seedling tree. I would make sure the seedling's trunk is thick enough to take the side graft. About a 1/2 inch trunk thickness is good.

I have hass seedlings that are 2 months old 18 inches tall the stem is very thin. Would topping them thicken the stem or what would you recommend?

Your video is amazing, I learned how to graft from your video mostly. I have questions. Is all the tape for grafts the same or not ? I watched some video they mentioned the graft could fail because of tape. Is it true?

Hi, I re-planted my avocado plant in a big wine barrel and kept it in full sun whole day, at first all leaves dried like chips. then new leaves came but they are also dying and again new leaves are coming. Is the plant getting too much wind because it is open area in the backyard and sometimes it is too windy. Should I move it to partial sun where there is less wind. It is 2ft tall tree. I added gypsum also after watching your video. When I bought the tree from nursery we could see the avocado seed which was very healthy but now it is shrinking. How much water should I give that plant?

Very informative video! Can you use anything besides the tape you used. Also I read you can use citrus do you happen to know if this is true?

  • @AJTheGraftMan

Thanks! You can use a rubber band to wrap the graft union and then put a small plastic bag over the rest of the graft area and tie that off tightly. Unfortunately you can only graft citrus to other citrus, and not to avocado

Hi I live in Northern California and you said keep it in the shade for the first month because it to hot where you live right, so my question is what's to hot? The average temp where I live is between 68 to 75 degree so do you think that I can keep mine on the sun or should I also put mine in shade like you did?

If there are no buds on the scion, I would not expect any growth from it. Might be a good idea to start again. Thanks for watching!

Hi, love your video, its very informative and detailed. I have a plant from seed which is 6 months old now like the one u showed in the video. Do i chopped the entire leaves off? Also we have a very old avocado tree which is starting to flower now, can i look for scion in our old tree? Is it ok to use something that is flowering already? Thanks in advance. Hopefully i can show u the picture 😊

Thanks! I would only chop the leaves off when I’m ready to graft. I have had no success with grafting flowering avocado stems. I would wait until the flowering ends and then graft regular, non-flowering scions. Also, if you live in the northern hemisphere, I’d wait until late February or early March to graft avocado. Good luck!

Hey AJ. Do you let the seedling push new growth while the graft is taking, e.g. buds lower than the graft on the seedling trunk or actually new trunk combing out of seed (I’ve got both happening with the 3 young seedlings I just grafted). Thanks

  • @AJTheGraftMan

    @AJTheGraftMan

    Жыл бұрын

I don’t let the seedling push new growth. That new seedling growth is competition with the graft, so I remove it
