How To Gradient Dye Canvas Sneakers

Today Vick is going to show you how to make a custom dip-dyed Air Jordan 4. The shoe we’re working with today is the Blank Canvas Jordan 4, which is a sneaker customizer’s dream. The inspiration for this custom Air Jordan is the iconic Jumpman Sunset photo (as seen on an upcoming pair of Jordan 1s, and the Photo Reel Jordan 29s).
The process for this custom is pretty simple. Using a few different colors of Rit Dye, Vick dyed the Canvas Jordan 4s to recreate that sunset gradient effect. He used orange dye to color the toe portion, and a few shades of blue and purple to color the back portion of the sneaker.
Some of the dye bled through onto the midsole, so Vick applied a quick coat of paint to even the tone out, and then used an x-acto knife to distress the edges of the canvas sneaker to give it a roughed-up look.
The finishing touch on this Custom Sunset Air Jordan 4 is the tongue tags, which Vick pulled from a pair of Sand 4s a while back and has been saving for a special project.

As someone who’s very experienced with dying fabric, the main reasons that you didn’t achieve the colors you originally wanted was you didn’t leave them in the dye bath long enough, unless the water is extremely hot (nearly boiling) it will take much longer for the dye to be absorbed into the fabric. Soaking the shoes in hot water before dunking them in the dye would have sped up the process as well, allowing more dye to be absorbed. Lastly since these were canvas using a dye fixative afterwards would have helped with bleeding tremendously, and they would be far more vibrant once fully dried.

Probably could’ve soaked the shoe in soda ash as well prior to dipping them in the dye

that would be a good idea!
If you lightly dremel the rubber outsoles/toe cap with a grinding stone, it removes the dye bleed because it's just surface level. Had this happen with a family forever pair I dyed and it came right off with some minor resurfacing.

You could try to make gradient laces. Uses the blue for the bottom and orange dye for the top.

Rit Dye recommends the water temp being between 140 and 160 degrees F.
I need help restoring the clear midsoles on Kobe 10 "Overcome". Lots of scuff marks all around the midsole of the shoe that makes shoes old and dull when there's alot of life left in shoes. Not worried about the clear bottom of the shoe that hits the ground, I just want to get rid of scuff marks. Help me Reshovn8r!!!

Not feeling these. Overall the work is good. But not a fan of the barely dyed look. or the two toned orange/blue. But this is only the 2nd "L" i've ever given The Almighty Vick. So his rep is still safe. With a record of over a hundred wins vs -2 losses. He's still Hall of Fame
