How to Gold Leaf over Texture - Tutorial

This week is gold leaf over texture. I share how to apply the glue or size to a textured surface. When it is ready, I share tricks to pick up the fly away leaf and apply it to your surface.
I use Mona Lisa metal leaf kits. The Speedball Spray Adhesive is no longer available but there are other brands. You can just use the fluid size and brush that on. Be sure to seal the leaf before painting on top.

soft cloth or cotton ball
I used a textured surface I made using modeling paste and then I painted it with Red Iron Oxide.
The easiest way to get started is to buy a kit. Mona Lisa Speedball comes with leaf, size and sealer. The leaf you get in the kit is Not the Simple Leaf. You may purchase that separately.
I show how to use an extra thick adhesive size over textured surfaces. You may use this or a spray, but if you only have the brush on size, that will work for medium height texture.

Yes. I match the weight of the paper to the weight of the gel. For a heavier paper use a heavy gel.
Can gold leaf be applied over ceiling textures? I have a shell design in my ceiling but I am interested in the gold leafing effect. Would I have to remove the ceiling design?

The only issue is the adhesive. There is a fluid adhesive you have to paint on and it might drip. There are spray adhesives but they are very toxic and messy. Taking the design down would probably be easier in the long run. Let me know how it goes.
what about protection, for long life, can we use acrylic spray or varnish to protect it

You want to use an MSA varnish as I say in the video. MSA stands for mineral spirit. An acrylic array will eventually tarnish the imitation gold leaf.
