How to go to the Great Wall Mutianyu by public bus

This video shows how to get to the Great Wall at Mutianyu in Beijing by public bus.
Here is a summary of how to do it:
- Take the subway line 2 to the Dongzhimen station
- Take exit C and follow signs to the Transport Center
- Enter the transport center (next to the KFC) and look for bus 916 Express
- 916 Express is written as 916块
- bus fare is 12RMB or 6RMB if you have the transportation card (Yikatong)
- The bus takes a little over one hour to reach the village of Huairou. In Huairou you get off at the Huairou Bei Da Jie stop. Stops are announced in Chinese only. Let the driver know that you are getting off at Beijing-based Da Jie.
* *One or two stops before Bed Da Jie, someone will stick their head in the bus and yell Mutianyu Great Wall and wave you out. Do not pay attention to the scammers. The will overcharge you to take you there.**
- At Bei Da Die, cross the street to take bus H23 or H24 (5RMB). The ride will be about 15-20 minutes.
- Near that bus stop there will be some drivers with mini vans who will offer to take you to Mutianyu. It is ok to take these vans but negotiate a rate of 5RMB per person.
- Note that when returning to Beijing, you will take bus 916 at this bus stop.

Be aware that in August 2016 on the 916 Express bus, I was approached by a man dressed in a Beijing Transport uniform, he came directly to me (the only westerner) to tell me that this was my stop and I needed to get out and use a taxi for the Great Wall. As he pointed to two burly looking guys standing outside the bus. This was on the first stop off the expressway from Beijing and on the outskirts of Huairou. I told him to get lost and ignored him, as I used to live in the area and know the city, plus my destination was not even the Great Wall that day. It was simply an attempted scam. Also as of December 31st, 2017 a new Beijing Suburban Railway opened to Huairou North station from Huangtudian station in Beijing (just south of Huoying Metro, Line 8 & 13), the same train station for rail access to Badaling Great Wall.

Technically the eventual Beijing terminus with be at Beijing North station (next to Xizhimen Metro) but that is currently being renovated for the 2022 Winter Olympics and the new high speed railway to Zhangjiakou. Also soon to open, a further extension from newly opened Huairou North station will go to Gubeikou, Miyun county, near to the Simatai Great Wall. Thus the three major Great Wall tourist sites will be accessible from Huangtudian station later in 2018.

Went on Chinese New Year, I was the only one on the wall, literally not another soul in sight. Things to keep in mind: THE LAST BUS BACK IS 6:50PM. If you aren't going to make it in time for that, don't go, it will cost like 500 yuan to get a taxi back from there. 5 yuan might be possible for a negotiation if you are chinese and fluent in mandarin but there is absolutely no way you are going to be able to broker that deal as a foreigner. Especially on the way back, expect to pay double, because they know that it isn't obvious what time or where the buses run from, they always posture as if the buses have stopped running (and they are at least extremely infrequent). I had to pay 15 per person on the way there, 30 per person on the way back. And I jumped in the car with a chinese guy and his daughter on the way back who also paid 30 each to the dude.

I am just worried about walking in the sun for my wife between places. With private tour you will be in a car. I guess we can always find a coffee place near by. Tour will cost a little more with convenience but give us less adventures and freedom.

I guess that your question is about Beijing and general and not about the Great Wall specifically. I think that the subway is better than a car in Beijing. For one thing, traffic is very bad. Second, for many attractions, even with a car, you end up with a lot of walking. For example, cars cannot stop in front of the Forbidden city. With 3 people, it makes sense to hire a driver for the Great Wall though. To find a driver check the classifieds on www.thebeijinger.com

Now, you can also take "慕田峪旅游专线" directly from DongZhiMen Wai to there, non-stop, 30 RMB, only runs on weekends 8:30(To MuTianYu)/16:00(Back to city). But first you need to know how to read "慕田峪旅游专线"... Not recommend any foreigners who dosent know Chinese at all to use Beijing buses, especially beijing suburban/rural buses (Start with 8/9/H/Y/M/F/X/昌/兴/顺/房/密...+numbers, such as H11). Most of them lack service/stop signs and only have few service each day. (Do you know where to get correct timetable? First, search baidu map, google is not working at all, then for this case search 8684.cn(Chinese only) to check if baidu is correct, in extreme cases you may need to phone the bus company) Even beijingers have trouble taking rural buses... And most bus stops are only in Chinese, the stop signs may outdated/lost/covered with ads... Also most Beijing buses are self-service ticketing, no change, recommend to use YiKaTong card.(You may deal with Chinese only service again) Just use subways only...Or find a Chinese friends.
