GREAT WALL OF CHINA: Using Beijing Metro and trains to visit the crowds of Badaling.

I could have joined a full day or half day tour to the wall, but where's the challenge in that? By using the Metro and a suburban train, I managed to access the closest point in which the Great Wall of China passes Beijing. I did it like the locals do, and experienced the crowds like the locals do. Online guides say don't go to Badaling because it's too busy, so I was curious to see exactly how busy Badaling was. I found out.

Wow, big changes since I went to the Great Wall in 1995, I think. It was November and ferociously cold on the Wall. Probably the equivalent of hiking in the Highlands in winter. Very few people were there that day, as you can imagine. It is so impressive to see the wall stretch up and down the mountainous terrain, and it really exhausting to walk any distance. I couldn't imagine being there in the middle of the summer with the crowds and the oppressive heat. It was very humbling to be there and imagine the scale of the construction and the conditions the workers endured to construct it. I didn't even realize there was a train service to Badaling - in fact, it may not have even been built when I visited. Instead, I took a tour bus day trip, which included the obligatory stop at a factory selling tourist crap. Apart from taxis, that appeared to be the only way to get there at that time. Made it a lot less chaotic than what you experienced. My experience of the train station in Beijing was seeing an army of people camped out on the concrete quadrangle outside the main entrance. This was families from the interior of China coming here to seek jobs. I have no idea how many days or longer those poor people were encamped there. It was quite shocking to see.

When I did the Great Wall I went the same route as you did but managed to pay for cable car in cash. Mind, I was with a handy Chinese person to do the wayfinding and ticket buying!

Yes I have 👍 next time try Mutianyu It’s more spectacular and less crowded And I think you don’t need to book the cablecar there. At least in 2015 And also you can make all the way back down in the greatest toboggan in the whole world Greetings from Greenwich London ✌️😎👍

Any travellers to the Great Wall from Beijing, never catch a Jade tour coach to the wall, it is a trick, you are taken to the wall and then to a jade factory, then to a palace with a jade factory inside, and then another jade factory, it ruins your day and takes you a step closer to madness. Other than that, Beijing is a wonderful city, and the Forbidden City is a must see, place to visit.

Thanks for the comment. I've heard about these factory tours, but I don't think they are unique to China.

@@PlanesTrainsEverything ppl can be killed just by getting close to the high voltage line. China has the highest voltage line in the world, +/-1.1million volts.

Cool tour, R.N. (shameless cross-channel plug) Is there a app that will translate signs, when viewed on a pfone, yet? T'would be a boon for travelers, methinks. I can imagine the plethora of monster bottle dumps all along the wall, chock full of stuff from the bajillion workers it took to make all those rocks look like they fit together. :-))
