How to Go Beyond Diversity and Inclusion to Community and Belonging | E'Ula Green | TEDxOU

Do you ever wonder if people who “have it all together” really know what they’re doing? Could it be they’ve just become experts at pushing through ambiguity? Through personal experience and interviews with a few leaders at the height of their careers, this talk issues both a license-to-chill and a call-to-action. My life's journey began in West Africa, and my family has always been committed to social service. While I will be the first to acquire a master's degree in Social Work, there are many social servants that include ministers, teachers, therapists, nurses, musicians, artists, historians, and financial advisers. These family dynamics have deeply impacted my perspective on life by making me highly aware of the needs of others around me. I have spent the majority of my life traveling internationally with my family on missions of service. I have participated in medical mission trips, trips to build and reinforce infrastructures and buildings, I have assisted with nutritional needs assessment and fulfillment, educational camps, safety education, and a host of other types of activities directed toward individuals, families, and communities that are under-served and less fortunate. It is this strong commitment to compassionate equity that drives my life's work. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. A simple, heartfelt talk. Many of us have that problem of our names not being pronounced right. It makes us feel excluded.

Thank you, E'Ula! My birth name is Yvonne, and it means archer. I tried to find the meaning of your name, but found only for "Eula," which means good speaker. You are definitely a good speaker! :-)

My name is Mercedes for as long as I can Remember people have always mispronounced my name and it was usually teachers, however for the most part it was unintentional since it was/is a result of how my name is pronounced in the Mercedes-Benz car commercials.

You probably should have included a caveat about how wonderful it feels to say your name out loud. There are many people who had to choose their own name after abusive parents misgendered them at birth. Someone asking their name could make them experience that trauma all over again.
