I just found your channel and I enjoy watching and learning from you very much. So in return, I thought I would pass along a hack you may find helpful. I am new to pottery/hand building, but not Art crafting. I've been making and selling my creations for over 35 years, so I hope you can use this tip. When you are glazing with a bottle, if you keep the bottle upside down by placing it in some sort of holder even when storing it, you will find you will have much less burping, fewer mistakes, less waste, and less aggravation. I drilled some holes in a cigar box to store my very small squirt bottles of paint upside down, and I haven't ruined anything from burping since. Your bottles are much larger, but you are the creative type, so I'm sure you can make something work for you. Great job, I hope my tip helps, I hope you have continued success! (love your toboggan, be proud of it!)

How much glaze do you waste when spraying, and how do you clean the booth? Also, what do you do with the dish underneath? Watching you work is so interesting.

How much clay do you use for your dinner plates?

Have you or can you, show how you make some of the different glazes you use. Thank you Eddies pottery in Illinois.

What is glaze exactly? What is it made of and how does it look so different after firing?

I was so surprised to see a Venco pugger. I thought that all American Potters had a Peter Pugger.But yea up for the Aussie's

Is your spray thinner than dipping glazes?

Love your videos Matthew! What type of air gun and compressor do you use? I have asked many people but most say a cheap brand that I think will not hold up well and will give bad results. Yours looks like it is quality.

Sorry for the delay. My spray gun is a Hyundai. It was $25 on Amazon. Ive tried a cheap one from harbor freight before that did not work well. You don’t need to spend a fortune but a higher priced gun should work better and last longer.

My compressor is a Kobalt from Lowe’s Hardware. As long as you have a regulator to set the pressure to around 45 lbs or pressure you should be good with any.

But what kind of paint is used on food safe plates? I want to repaint my plain boring dinnerware but I don’t know what is safe. Please help!

Do you end up with a lot of wasted glaze?

Great video, great tips! My one concern is that when you are at the wheel you are very quiet. Did you call the thing on your head a tobaggan? Here in Canada we call it a toque.

Yes that’s a toque or toboggan. Haha. I got a new microphone that attaches to my phone and may have to play around with the volume in post production. Thanks for the insight. I did watch it back on my laptop before making it public and thought all was well. I’ll check it again.

You’re welcome! I lived in Toronto for a year back in 99-2000 and my family is from upstate NY. My family had a toboggan sled but we also called the hat the same name. Haha. Confusing i know.

The bottle that your using like slip trailing has a long pointed nozzle. Where did you find this? Beautiful work. Very helpful and informative video. Thank you for posting

Matthew Kelly Pottery oh thank you so much. I threw 10 small plates yesterday with your new low profile design to fit in the dishwasher but thought I Hope the glaze perk them up. Was thinking about slip. Maybe slip dragonflies. So they would be influenced by your work but would nothing like your work. Once again thanks for your advice

Very interesting. I have seen ash sprayed on pieces, but it was only mixed with water, then fired. So my question is what sort (colour) of glaze do you use and what sort of quantity? Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

I use multiple different ash glazes. I would encourage you to do some research on ash glazes. There is plenty of info on them out there. It all depends on what temperature you’re firing to and if the glaze works well with your clay. Tons of trial and error to get it to work out, but well worth it in my opinion.

Marcia Silvia Johnson I meant to include a picture in the videos but once it was uploaded, with multiple failed attempts I didn’t enjoy the idea of editing and uploading again. Sorry for that. I’ll look into taking a better photo and posting it to KZread as a post instead of a video. I think you can do that...?

Is ash glaze food safe?

I sure hope so. Hundreds of potter for thousands of years have been using some form of ash glaze. I see no reason why it’s not. There’s no heavy metals in it that would make it harmful.

Matthew, what type of wood ash? Hard wood has more lye in it. Soap makers use hard wood ash lye. Would any type of wood ash work?

Janet Johnson I had a chart on this but I think that they are actually pretty similar once the wood has burned away. Mostly firing is done with pine. So mostly softwood. So yes any wood ash would work. But just see what Mathew says.

Well all of that depends on the glaze and clay and kiln temperature and your desired effect. And probably a half dozen other factors. Haha. Mine definitely looks better that way.
