    I had a super eye-opening game last night. Was losing a high diamond game pretty damn bad (enemy pushed Junker Town with 2:38 left). I was doing bad, my dps + supp was doing bad, and we all deflected blame. But the person on my team that was doing the worst, one of my dps, instead of being negative, he actually gave my team a motivational speech through VC, sayin that we got this, and that it's possible. I then became way more active in comms, coordinated my dives with him (Ball + Genji) and we pushed all the way in overtime. Then, even when it was 1:00 to 3:38, we full held them and won the next rounds. Y'all, your teammates made it to the rank you're in for a reason. It's all in the coordination and the mental. You *can* win.

I thought "others climb without it, why should I have to go through the emotional burden of managing my teams emotions" But this video reminded me that comm's, leadership, maintaining positive vibes is a skill and that is important to the game. ❤️ I was going to address this in video but decided against it because it’s such a sad topic. The experience you get depends a lot on what game you’re playing and what elo you’re playing in. On my main account in Overwatch it’s rare that I get the sexist annoying bs, but on alt accounts and in other games I get it all the time. In those situations I always wait for someone else to talk first and see how the team vibes are. I can usually tell pretty well just off of how they act for a couple minutes whether or not I should speak and the unfortunate truth is that a lot of the time I shouldn’t. It’s so stupid that it is this way and I hate it!! Regardless even if you wait it out and only talk when you’re comfortable you’ll still get bs every now and then and I’ve cried because of it so many times. But each time it happens you get stronger, and each time you talk and queue again after it you’re winning against those idiots who try to put you down. I guess the answer is just talk as much as your mental can handle it, and there’s nothing wrong with not talking at all. Even in top 100 there are tons of players who don’t speak or even join voice chat. Keep yourself happy!! It’s not worth the mental anguish. But playing in groups and having duos can help a lot too. You can comm with them or just comm with your duo in group voice/discord

    @@Eskay_OW I really wish you'd put this in the video to be honest, if I hadn't scrolled down here and opened the comments I would've left thinking you were only pro voice comms. There are so many reasons, especially competitive reasons to not use voice and that did not come through in the video at all. For too many people comms are not safe or accessible or even worth the mental energy (ie not even competitively helpful, rather a hinderance) and I wish more people knew, and were told, and reassured that by someone in T500 who can relate. I personally think the narrative that comms are so important is a load of bullshit and it just makes people - who for very valid reasons can't use them - feel even more anxious and shit. It also wastes so much mental space for you and your team mates unless done well. There's so many cultural considerations to be made too, just let people play. ***If*** people are keen to use voice, then let's talk to *them* about etiquette and effective communication. Comms are like the last 5% to greatness, if you're in T500 or high level scrims that 5% can be everything, heck it's the whole game at that point. For the more than 99% of the player-base though, whether you should or should not be using voice comms is so deeply dependent on a lot of things that these 'how to comm and carry your ranked games' never address :/ I rate the words about vibes at the end though

Obviously I'm hard carried by being male presenting in the sense that noone hears a dude in voice and is creepy or violent towards them, which has given me a lot more practise learning how to com. The first tip actually works well even in other places. I'm temporarily living in Japan and most Japanese players will use the hello macro in game, but if you go out of your way to type "hello", "good morning", or "good evening" in chat, or say it in vc, you find that players are real responsive and will chime back with the same very politely to enthusiastically. Sets a good tone for the game to come.

I think one of the biggest takeaways I got from this video was the very first tip…just saying hello to my team at the start of the game. Although I’m not afraid to speak over voice chat, I always wonder if I’ll sound like a big dork if I say hi right off the bat…but you’re so right, doing this breaks the ice and will hopefully lead to those who are in vc actually piping up because they know I’m listening and will respond if they have some info/strats to share.

  • @baldfelix1841

    @baldfelix1841

    i mean i dont think its that that bad, you get some chill people but definitely toxicity exists. I have peaked high gm on tank and sup, barely play dps but could probably reach gm if i really applied myself. I have also played in every role every rank up to diamond on various alts. People will shit talk, i will get flammed for locking the wrong character or not preforming, while literally playing my best character on my best role trying my hardest to win. Just ignore them 90% of the times they have no idea what they are talking about, and even if they do they communicate in such a negative way its not worth your time. Just try to stay positive and encourage your teammates to join vc. It does suck in lower ranks to deal with coms, its hard to get team to ever be positive unless im literally preforming my ass off, so i can imagine what its like if your just having an average or even bad game, the amount of toxicity does suck. Id saying trying to get a premade queue is a good idea, people that can keep a good clean mental, and com a bit. Having bad attitude in your lobby really does impact preformance.

    While yes toxic people are super common, going in with the mindset that doing x is useless is also pretty damaging to your own mental before you even start the round. The only way to get better is learning how to deal with/overcome others’ attitudes and being able to preserve your own mental over the possibility of someone else’s being bad.

    there's nothing wrong with stating your intentions clearly; if you want to come off as friendly you can either outright say "sorry if i come off wrong, i have troubles managing my tone", or using turns of phrase that can't really be taken off the wrong way like "can we try this for a second? i think i have a plan". In these situations it helps me to visualize this scenario: If i was ready to be angry at my teammate for whatever reason, which way could they tell me something that I would be inclined to listen? What kind of words or phrases would tell me this person is trying to help instead of judging me?

    Honest opinion, if you break the ice and say hello at the beginning in a friendly tone, people wont take things personal if you make comms later even if they are agressive. If they do, say "dont take it personal im trying to help us win". At that point, anyone still agressive would have been regardless of your comms, and its a problem with their ego that hopefully gets better as they age:)

    Some tips that should be mentioned for support/healers. Dos. 1. Comms should be used for 2v1 dive kill a healer or attacker on opposing side. Specify which enemy player and location. 2. Healer support should call out players to 'move back, move with me, move forward' to get support. So that support player can maximise support to maximum players. 3. Support players should stay with other members of team, rather than moving cart, or doing their own thing. 4. Generally stay with your tanks, unless your DP asks you to specifically come and dive a enemy specific. 5. Always stay alive, by using Tanks for shields, or being with 2 other team members. Ask team to ULT to keep you alive if necessary. Don'ts 1. Don't waste time shooting enemy tank by your self. 2. Be healing only one DP player, while leaving tanks and other dp without support, (unless specific clutch dive) 3. Don't be alone. 4. Dual with enemy players even other healers/supports. 5. Don't be in the front of your team (unless body blocking a low team member).

So every time I listen/read a toxic comm, it's absolutely mind boggling.. like, "this kid doesn't know what game mode he selected? Or what game he just launched? ...Or he's here to just throw other people's game on purpose? What's the deal??!" Overwatch needs positive/good vibe interactions with teammates, for it's a team depending game. It's just so obvious - or at least it should...

    Great video. I will say, though, that as someone in the metal ranks, I've found that I tend to rank up more if I'm not in voice. I get tilted very easily (if I'm being flamed or whatever), and play at least a full rank lower. I cut vc out of my life and it's made overwatch a lot more fun for me.

    Eskay - can I ask, that decision at 4:27 to not help your Ana, but to push cart instead, what are the factors that go into that decision? From my perspective, as a much lower ranked Plat player, my instinct would have been to speed to her aid.

    I mean me here low top 500 sup player have played in lobbies with people like eskay before id do the same thing in that situation of course. Objective is so important, and its pretty unlikely the ana is going to die in that situation since her team is coming and she has abilities like nade and sleep. Ana called it out pretty early most likely has abilities and teammates, if she does end up dying its perfectly ok because the point got pushed, if she doesnt die which is more likely then you have cart pushed for next fight, plus pushing cart gets stuff like closer respawns and what not.

    Question: Do you think it's necessary to know how to play every single hero in the role that you're queuing for in competitive games? You said at 8:42 that you should swap heroes if you're team asks nicely, which I completely agree with. But what if you only know how to play a few heroes in your role? For instance, my friend only plays projectile supports (Lucio, Kiri, Zen, Lifeweaver), so they can't really swap to anyone who can deal with flyers like Echo or Pharah. I myself am a rather new player, so I only know how to play 3 heroes from each role. In you're opinion, should people who just want to one-trick or play a few heroes queue for ranked games (as competitive lobbies are typically where one is challenged the most or on a more consistent basis)? Should you feel obligated to learn a hero you don't want to play to satisfy anyone who asks you to swap to a specific support, tank, DPS, etc? Should those people just play QP and never try playing competitively? Or should learning how to play more heroes be more of a natural progression for the individual? Should they, if they so desire, stick with a few characters they personally find fun, learning how to play against their counters and maximize the impact of their hero's abilities to play in any situation in the process? This is something I've been thinking about for a while, any help is greatly appreciated!

    Just answering as a rando, but: I started playing in Overwatch 2, and I only played Kiri and Lucio in comp. I had NO understanding of how the rest of the support heroes worked, and because I didn't know their abilities or advantages, I could never fight against them on my own, and I absolutely could not communicate to my team what needed to be done to win the fights against them. And this doesn't just apply to specific heroes in your role, but it applies to roles as a whole. If you don't know what a hero can do, you're going in blind against them. I picked up Mercy a few months after first playing Overwatch, just because she seemed like a good hero in comp if I wanted to provide value to my team without having too much game sense yet. I think playing Mercy gave me the game sense that I needed to play any hero. She's one of the only heroes that you should rarely see doing direct damage, compared to Lucio or Kiri or Ana who are doing damage all the time. As Mercy, you are basically watching the whole game from a backseat. Your job is to keep an eye on your team, and thus keep track of their abilities AND the enemy teams abilities so you know when or who you should be damage boosting. No matter what, you will learn every heroes abilities and cooldowns the more you play, and you will learn how to counter them and how to position around them (ex. Don't stay in the middle of your team if you see a Reaper flanking to highground). I think Overwatch is the kind of game that can get kindof boring or frustrating if you play just a few heroes out of the entire roster. Or even if you just stick to one role. I really recommend playing a lot of Mystery Heroes, or in quickplay, queuing roles/characters you have never played before. Sure, you might lose, you might have no idea what you're doing at first, but it's a lot of fun and will not only give you insight into how to counter those heroes, but experience to bring into competitive. And if people flame you, ignore them!
