How to give an asthmatic cat an inhaler

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Emerald gets her inhaler!
Points not covered in the video:
- It's best not to press the Aerokat onto the cat's face, she will be more cooperative if it's lightly resting on her face.
- If possible, she likes it if you stroke her paw while she is getting the inhaler.

Thank you for posting this! I was worried that using the inhaler twice a day would be a pain for me and for my cat, but was reassured by the calm no-big-deal-ness of your video. We're using the inhaler now with no difficulty, and my cat loves routines so much that he gets up on the countertop mornings and evenings to get his medicine--and his treat:)

Liked your video and the no nonsense way about it- Your kitty is just adorable!! Since I am a little bit of a tightwad (& an Aerokat is now $70 on Amazon) plus I wasn't super sure my cat had asthma but he just turned 14 yo & has never hocked up hairballs so I thought maybe???--- I just "made" an Aerokat-cut the tip off a funnel that would fit over his snout and duct taped it to a plastic bottle I cut down from 20 to about 16 ounces. Then I put duct tape on the open end of the bottle leaving a hole just big enough for my own personal rescue inhaler that I had on hand. I shake it up and give a small puff while it's over his mouth and hold it there for a bit-light condensation shows he's breathing it in. Works like a charm-his breathing improves a lot & his Vet loves it & told me to keep using it. And of course after he gets a treat after being such a good kitty.

I'm so sorry to read that your Emerald passed away in the meantime. But thank you still for this informative video that will surely help many other cats! xxx

I can't really remember how much the Aerocat cost--maybe $40 or $50? We used it for many years, though. Thank you! Unfortunately Emerald passed away last year from fast-growing kidney cancer. Gratefully, it was a brief illness and not painful.

I just adopted a kitty that wandered into my apartment building &named her Mellow. I've only had her for about a month, and in the last week or so she's been coughing. Looks so uncomfortable for her. To the vet we go in a few days!

Well I think you should really consult your vet about that, since I'm not a doctor. I can tell you from my personal experience that Emerald began experiencing her asthma around 2003, but we did not treat it regularly until about 2007. She was extremely difficult at first, but the asthma became more pronounced and necessitated treatment. She's now 17 years old, still active and healthy, but I attribute a lot of that to the treatment. It's definitely been beneficial for her.

I just bought an aerokat, it's expensive ($119 for the chamber and another $325 for two medications that will last me the year) but the $800 I just spent because of a really bad attack and needing oxygen overnight is not worth the money or the suffering for the kitty to not have the stuff at home

@Klayre Your cat will totally hold her breath to avoid getting the treatment or take very shallow breaths that aren't registered by the indicator. She probably learned from the first time she didn't like it. I would give her a while until you see some visible breaths; I would ordinarily wait for more breaths if they were shallow.

I like the count to 10 you did - if you always do that, I am guessing that Emerald would get used to that and associate it with the mask coming off :)

As a human doctor Im amazed too see pets can suffer these type of diseases (I thought they may suffer similar to humans) as well as glad to know they got devices for their treatment. What's the average cost of the aerocat device?. BTW a 17 years old cat that's amazing, gj on taking care of your cat, she must be very attached to you.

Hello, my kitty is 17 and just diagnosed with asthma. The inhaler is hard for her and the cost of the Fluticasone is horrific. The cheapest I found was 261.00 so I was forced to order from out of the country. It hasn’t arrived yet but I am so worried. She also uses Albuterol. Any thoughts on the Fluticasone?

What if Feline Asthma is left untreated? My female cats has had asthma for about two years. Just recently I've noticed that she seems more tired all the time. Also, she tends to have more attacks when I pick her up or if she starts purring. Is an inhaler really necessary.

@saveusrecycle If feline ashtma is left untreated, the next coughing attack could cause your cat to suffocate and stop breathing. Some cats die of asthma this way; some are rushed to the hospital after they have turned blue. Do you know what asthma is? If you had it, you wouldn't let your kitty suffer. Your kitty cannot breathe comfortably and her lungs hurt probably all the time. It isn't just when she coughs that she suffers. You need to help her.

I started giving my cat Miu her meds through the Aerokat. The first time went pretty much all smooth, but the second time the flow vu indicator wasn't moving in the slightest. Could she be holding her breath? Because I find it pretty strange to believe she didn't breathe for about 30 seconds..
