Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Does your cat have asthma? How do you use an asthma inhaler in your cat? In this video, Dr. Justine Lee, veterinary specialist, demonstrates how to use the Aerokat (or Aerodawg) aerosol chamber to help give albuterol (inhaled bronchodilator) or fluticasone (inhaled steroid) to your cat. My cat has asthma for roughly 18 months and it gradually got worse, i came in from popping to the shop yesterday to find my poor Leo dead at 5 years old. He has never been the healthiest of cats bless him and was on steroids full time to reduce the inflammatory on his lungs. I never thought asthma would be the route cause of his death and to find him dead was horrifying. Please be aware that if you looking at these videos because your uncertain if it a hairball or cough etc.. it really is a serious condition and causes your cat great discomfort, get them to the vets. Avoid using aerosols around them, dont use dusty cat litter and there are cat inhalers you can get. Only after loosing him did i realise how serious it was, i was advised by the vets the steroids will shorten his life but my poor boy lost his battle way to early and all it makes you do is look back and think what else you could have done. Avoid that feeling by doing what you can now. RIP Leo x

    My Tuna is so laid back that she is fine with me using the AeroKat Chamber. I would lay it beside her for about a week before actually using it. I would talk softly to her and place it over her nose and mouth for a second or two and lay it back down. She is also diabetic and receives insulin. At 6am and 6pm I bring out all her meds and her food, usually about 5 mins prior. I tell her its medicine time and she knows she gets to eat. I start with the AeroKat so its long forgotten by the time she gets to eat. I always let her smell the chamber before I use it so she knows what comes next. Then she sniffs her Insulin syringe prior to me giving it to her. I use a freestyle Libre Sensor on her so checking her glucose is easy. My one question is ...how do I clean her mouth after administering the Flovent? I squirt water in her mouth but she swallows it and from what I read its to be a rinse . Can you please advise on this step?

    Janice, you are a true Animal Angel. Compromised creatures need dedicated, and sometimes long, care - especially if they are Seniors. They need their medications given on time - and our minds go crazy if we are not on time. We need to have a willingness to learn, so we can understand their conditions and signs to look for. They are just like us. They get the same diseases we do; they can take the same medicines we do; they get old - just like we do. We are their voice. We exist for them, not the other way around. Thank you, Janice, for being a wonderful voice for your creature Tuna. I can tell how much you love and care about her. This world needs more people like you. ❤

His Dr and his team were wonderful and loved him as much as I. I asked a lot of questions and learned so much about senior dogs and how their bodies are. How resilient they are. Dr lee, Thank you for your video. My cat has been having asthma type attacks since more than 1 year. We made a huge blunder by ignoring it as she used to have it only once every couple of weeks and we thought its a digestive issue. The attacks have started to become much more frequent (thrice a week) and violent. My vet did a xray and blood tests including heartworm and diagnosed her with asthma. Vet said there is significant lung scarring and trachael congestion. She didnt rule out Lungworm but said lungworm is rare in Western India due to aridness. Could lungworm be the cause or does this for sure sound like asthma? She hunches during the attack and has periodic wheezing. No nasal discharge. Sometimes when shes sleeping i notice rapid breathing. I have got the Aerokat inhaler and starting treatment tomorrow. Should we give fluticasone twice daily 110mg and Albuterol when there is an attack?

  • @drjustinelee

    @drjustinelee

    Great question - it is really rare for pets to get trush (a fungal infection) in their mouth or face while using steroid inhalers FREQUENTLY. IMO, you shouldn't be using inhalers frequently (e.g., more than once a week) - if you are, you need to talk to your vet about ORAL steroids for a pulse coarse therapy, removing smoke/inhaled asthmatic stimulants, getting hepa filters, etc.

  • @drjustinelee

    Great question - in general, no. It's not fast acting enough in my experience, and albuterol is a bronchodilator (fast acting), so I prefer that. You CAN use a steroid (like Symbiocort - budesonide) but I prefer the steroid fluticasone. When i doubt, check with your vet. There are contraindications for using certain ones. Best of luck! 7 to 10 breaths is one minute. That's how many breaths a cat typically takes within one minute when they are relaxed at home. With an asthmatic cat who is breathing harder, they will be inhailing in more drug so you could likely do 10 breaths or 20 to 30 seconds.

    Cats normally breath 10-20 breaths per minute. So in general, I say 1 minute vs. counting breaths.

    So true. No one should be spraying chemicals in to their home or worse yet using plug ins that spray 24 hrs a day. Good way to get breathing issues and cancer.

    My cat was diagnosed with asthma recently. My vet said don’t use any sprays at all, including perfume. No scents at all. Dust free litter. I also have an air purifier. I don’t smoke but a nearby tenant does. I have draft stoppers around the doors to block it.

    DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE INSTRUCTIONS. 1 minute is way too long. Aerocat has its own video...ur only supposed to hold it on for 5 breathes!!

    Well, being that most normal resting respiratory breathing rates of cats is 20 breaths per minute, and cats with asthma can breathe inappropriately at 60-100 breaths per minute, "5 breaths" is erroneous, FYI.
