I have autism and definitely saliva related problems even as an adult. What's weird is I never had a spitting problem because spitting isn't ladylike so I don't do it. But I lack an automatic swallowing reflex so I don't swallow unless I remember and I only remember when I notice my mouth being extra full, and because the sensation of a mouth full of saliva is normal to me, it doesn't send the signal to my brain until my mouth is completely full. I've been told that sometimes my cheeks start to bulge and huge wads pulsate in the corners of my mouth. I usually manage to keep it all in my mouth but I've been told sometimes I'm hard to understand because of all that saliva.

Robin, thank you for sharing your experience. Did you consult with a doctor by chance?

@@MariaBorde Yes, quite a few times over the years. My parents brought it up with the doctors when I was little, they noticed after I was done cutting teeth that I still drooled profusely. I eventually learned how to swallow but I have to remember to swallow or I drool. Thankfully by age 8 I'd curbed most of the drooling. I'm 27 now (well I'll be 27 in December)

@@LogoFreak93 Glad to read that you curbed most of it since you were 8, that's great! I want to wish you a happy birthday in advance, too.

@@MariaBorde it was due to medical issue. in GERD , acid comes into throat and increase the saliva in mouth. so i gave him ranitidine . and now he feel relief in his swallowing and spitting issue. first of all we should treat medical issue.

My son is 2 years old so i cant give him either of those 2 things yet but he has straight up impulses from grabbing food and trying to throw it or smear it and spilling his milk and rubbing it everywhere and a couple months ago started spitting and smearing it everywhere. Is there any hope or do i just spit back at him to assert dominance

  • @MariaBorde

No, because repeating the behaviour will "teach' him that it is acceptable. How do you respond when he does that?
