How To Get Up On A Foil

Ойын-сауық

WATCH BEFORE TRYING TO FOIL! This will hopefully save you some time, frustration, and hopefully put some of your fears to rest. I too thought it was scary at first but after teaching a lot of people to get up for the first time on a foil, I've learned some key steps to help riders have success on day one! Foiling is a different start compared to anything we've done behind the boat and is why so many people find it difficult at first. Remember, you are RIDING A WING NOT A BOARD! I know there are many different ways to learn how to do this but this is the way I have found the most success for most riders that are learning to get up for the first time.

    I bought a foil board earlier this summer and couldn’t get up on it for the life of me so I put it up in the rafters. After watching Shawn’s video I was excited to try it again with his super easy riding tips. Yesterday I was able to get up on it and actually foil. What an amazing feeling really is like nothing else!!! Thank you Shawn! Love everything you do and the way you explain it all! 🎉

    So fun, and Shaun explained it all perfectly. Foiling is hands down our favorite thing to do behind the boat now, and this is coming from a family of skiers and surfers. Terrifying the first couple times, but stick with it and you’ll be riding in the surf wave before you know it 🤘🏻.

    Finally ~ a tutorial video that starts folks on a long line! Great overview. I still recommend folks as they pump to waves further back, wear bright colors so other boaters can see you. Without a tow line out that far back, I do not trust other captains to see me so I wear bright orange or neon yellow dry-fit shirt over my CGA vest!

    Thanks for the tips Shaun! I struggle most with the lateral rolling of the board where it seems to have a mind of its own and usually end up getting bucked off one side or the other. I appreciate your insights.

    Great question Jeff. It's a way slower turn/bank than anything I've ridden before. It's just very slow to turn essentially. BUT, it's very fast to climb so in that direction be sure to make adjustments in very small increments, but in the turns it's super super slow, so wait for it and be patient.

    Have watched a few "how to foil" vids, but this is the one I was waiting for! Especially after the history of foiling series. Love the way you explain it as you're actually doing it (shout out BBTalkin) and as always the tips and hacks are huge; hope to get to try one before the season ends. Curious on one thing - how do you know when you're about to breach? Is there a feeling from the wing or just learning how tall the mast is and not flying too high?

  • @Shaun.Murray

    @Shaun.Murray

    10 ай бұрын

    when the water is calm enough you can look down briefly and see the wing's clearance from water surface. Then look around and see how it feels/looks. Mid mast is a good place to cruise for starters but feels like you're a mile high.

  • @Shaun.Murray

    @Shaun.Murray

    Now that's kinda funny bc the backwards start was my very first shot in wakeboard magazine back in 1995! I should def do a video on that so thanks for that. What's your proper name so I can mention you in the video if I do it? I can also just call you by your handle.

    Tks. Very good aproach. Foil is the yoga of watersports. You can do it for hours but I do suggest that everyone wear a helmet, safety first.

    Helmet's not a bad idea. I use the Bb Talkin setup when I'm coaching people. Still have yet to have someone need the helmet bc the board hit em but doesn't mean it can't happen.

    Do you have video of how fast the boat is going at 'idle' when you are first flying? How many mph is it going? This looks so much more controlled than ALL the other learn to foilsurf videos!

  • @Shaun.Murray

    @Shaun.Murray

    4 ай бұрын

    I don't yet but you can begin to fly the wing around 6-8 mph on a 75 foot rope bc your speed from cutting is faster than the boat. You can fly the Hyperlite Booster 1300 and Commander 1300 around 8-9 mph going straight. People generally go way to fast on the start and makes them think foiling is scary and super hard. It's not. It's different than anything you've done bc it's a wing and we don't ride wings elsewhere.

    Fantastic. Get some straps on, like the wing foilers……I’m really looking forward to a strapped flip or raley, just like the wing foilers. It takes plenty of practise……but the tricks that the wingfoilers are doing just show that the ‘full airchair’tricks is possible standing. It just needs someone to push the sport behind the boat!

    Nice video, was the one I was waiting for to decide on buying one, however the Hyperlite Shuttle set isn't available for purchase anymore in Europe... I have an e-foil (for when I don't have a driver for our boat), how is the comparison to being pulled by the boat?

  • @Shaun.Murray

    @Shaun.Murray

    E Foil helps w the understanding of climbing, descending, and banking, but you lean pretty far ahead of the wing. But definitely is helpful in my experience.

    Is a ski rope better so it does not bounce you like a wakeboard rope?

  • @Shaun.Murray

    @Shaun.Murray

    10 ай бұрын

    For foiling it's not super important but honestly wake ropes are static (no stretch) and ski ropes are more dynamic (stretch). For the most part.

    Seems the most unstable position on a foil is going straight. Much better to pull against a 3mph boat and control the line yourself.
