Cracking image John! Love the idea of tilting the mindset of feeling like you have to recapture iconic shots. Love the dedication, reckon I would have just struck this one off the list based on light pollution. We are pretty spoilt for skies once you clear the metropolitan areas.

Love this, John. Beautiful image, and weirdly I think the light pollution, and definitely the cloud, adds to it. In the UK we struggle to get the core high enough above the murk on the horizon, so finding alternative compositions is super helpful. Great video as always. 👍

Top result John considering all of the haze and light pollution at Catherine Hill Bay. When the core is up, every man and his dog are there for a shoot, so changing it up to shoot at a non core time is a good move. Orion and the Gum Nebula with the Summer Milky Way is definitely on my shooting agenda over the next few months. 😁👍😎

@@johnrutterphotography quite a lot, but well before I was into nightscapes (actually was pre digital when I lived there), visited a few times to do landscape stuff in recent times when I am over, it is a beautiful spot, but generally crawling with photographers 😂.

nice work mate and loved the Jandals! Just made me want to break out a beer and bbq by the beach. Thanks for sharing

Hahaa it's definitely a challenging place to shoot these days, so much light around. It definitely took all of my experience to manage to pull off an image there.

The flip-flops guy did it again! Very nice image John, fantastic composition woth the jetty framing orion. I really like it, it is very different and original composition. And great details BTW, did you use the narrowband filter?

It's funny you've made this because this week I was working on a project doing the exact same thing with orion. It kinda fell to pieces at the last second due to the fact I was borrowing gear, although it's probably been done many times, I think this may be only the 3rd image like it ever created from this location

@johnrutterphotography a a young kid I was a member of the YMCA, our camp (Crangan Bay) was on lake macquarie opposite catherine over the highway this was 1965ish The Milky Way, all the stars were very bright.

I'd take Orion over MW core every time :D. BTW why have you moved away from shooting the sky with 40mm?

I agree! I have been testing stacking each panel at 24mm rather than doing singles at 40mm to see if there is much difference, by stacking with a wider angle it takes about the same time as singles with the 40mm, so essentially I'm swapping resolution for integration time.

why did you take the old sky tracker and not gti?

Currently the gti is setup for a bit longer focal length with computer control at home, I'm just lucky I have a few trackers to use, if I only had 1 the gti would be it
