How to get the TIE: Non-Lucrative Visa for Spain

In this video, I explain what you do after you have received your visa and arrived in Spain, so you don’t make any mistakes that could jeopardize your stay and ruin all that hard work you did getting the visa in the first place. I am going to explain the order in which you need to do things, timelines, documents you need, how to fill the online application to make an appointment, how to complete the forms, how to pay the tax, and share our experience getting fingerprinted at the police station.
I am not covering what a non-lucrative visa is nor how to get one. I jump in right after you have arrived in Spain. Warning, this video is going to be very Madrid centric. These are the steps:
1) you need to find a place to live and secure a signed lease that is 6 months or longer
2) you need to padron - that is, register that lease with the local government
3) you need to secure a fingerprinting appointment with the police (harder than it sounds these days)
4) gather your documentation and bring it to that fingerprinting appointment.
5) wait for a period of time and return to pick up your TIE
In this video, I will explain step 3 & 4 in detail. I covered step 1 in this video: • Renting an Apartment i... and step 2 in this video: • How to Padrón in Madrid . Check out the time stamps in the description if you want to skip around.

This video has come just in time for me. Thank you for making it easy to understand. I needed it spelling out to me in digestible steps. I have a question as I want to arrange a toma de huellas before I get to Spain. Will a Spanish friends phone number be used for anything else or just initially to get the code?

  • @theSSHITT

Glad you found it useful! Spanish # is Just initially to get the code. You can schedule your fingerprinting appointment before you enter the country, but keep in mind, you will need to schedule a padron appointment to occur before the fingerprint appointment so that you can get the padron certificate and bring it to the fingerprinting appointment. You’ll need a 6 month lease to bring to the padron appointment. So when scheduling toma de huellas, give yourself enough time to secure a lease and padron.

@@theSSHITT Thanks. Yes I was hoping to schedule an appointment 3 week in so I can schedule a padron beforehand. I believe you only get 1 month after arriving to get it all sorted. It would be harsh to not make it when Ive just gone through the process to get the NLV. I do not arrive until October. When is it best to start trying the booking system? Is now too too early?

@@BRIYONCE1 3 weeks might be enough time. It took me 2 weeks to find a place. I had the padron appointment 3 weeks after my arrival and the TIE fingerprinting appointment 6 weeks after my arrival. Same for Chris. A ton of immigrants did not make the 30 day cutoff because it was so hard to get appointments. Sometimes the appointments are too soon and then the next time you check, they are months out, and then the next time you check there are none available and then the next time you check the offerings are just right. The Spanish authorities are really understanding about this. The consulate workers told me that they knew almost no one was able to make the 30 day window. No authority held us to it or even questioned us or anyone we knew about it. Aim for 30 days, but don't be too worried if you are only able to secure the fingerprinting appointment for day 35 or 40.

Hello! Thank you for posting this useful video! I successfully obtained my non-lucrative visa for Spain. I do not have a place to stay for 6 months or an address in Spain because I plan on exploring a bit before finding somewhere permanent to live. This obviously poses a problem for the Padron. You said that they did not ask you for your lease. Do you mean they did not ask you for the Padron? Is the Padron really necessary? Thank you!

The padron is necessary. Rent an airbnb for several weeks while you look for a place. Then rent a place for at least 6 months that will give you a lease. Here is how to get a padron: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHZrlKqrZ7ewadY.html

Hi, I'm looking to travel to Barcelona next year to take a 2 month certificate course, because of this I'm most likely to receive a short term visa. However, I'd like to travel to Valencia afterwards for a 6 month language course followed by an internship program. That being said, can I travel to Barcelona on my short term visa then head to Valencia to extend it? And can I apply for a TIE?

  • @theSSHITT

Hi! I am unsure. Are you from Uganda? We are from the U.S. so short term visas are not issued to us (we don´t need a visa if we are staying less than 3 months). I am unsure of what the rules are for your country. I would ask the Spanish consulate in the city closest to where you live. If you are a temporary resident (which it sounds like you will be), then you´ll need to apply for a TIE, probably in Valencia because that will be where you padrón. But ask your Spanish consulate to be sure.

Do you mean the 90 day mark on your visa? What type of visa do you have? We had a 1 year visa and our appointment to pick up the TIE was right on the border of the 90 day expiration date. It´s confusing because you can stay for 1 year but the visa expires after 90 days. It matters if you are trying to leave the country and get back in, especially during covid restrictions (when tourism wasn´t allowed). During covid, people had trouble getting appointments and extranjeria was months behind. It was not uncommon for people to secure fingerprinting appointments after the 90 day expiration date. You don´t get kicked out of the country though. Just don´t leave the country without the TIE. It´s less of a big deal now because you can just re-enter with your passport under no visa as a tourist. Carry the appointment document with you when you travel if you think you will have problem.
