    Definitely a classic surf sound with that spring reverb. After many years playing rock n roll, I've just switched to learning classic surf guitar which I really enjoy. Luckily I have a Fender 63 reissue reverb tank and Bassman amp and a Princeton amp, plus of course a Strat. I enjoyed your video and picked a few tips. Thanks.

    What if you want to get it really sounding super wet, like actual water dripping and endless echo type sound? I heard one song before and never heard it again.. total water dripping, Bloop-blooop type sound, kind of like this surf tone mixed with a bluesy tone, with an echo too.. how to get that tone?

  • @bristlefist

    @bristlefist

    Жыл бұрын

    Man or Astroman have that sound in a song but I'm pretty sure it's a sample of actual water dripping played behind more typical surf palm muting and it just sorta blends together. Saying that, surfy bear reverb tanks go super wet. I doubt many actually use them with the mix and dwell turned up to 10, combine that with slapback echo. Or put it through an amp that has built in reverb and dial back a little on the surfy bear. Could give you more clarity. Bluesy tone is likely amp break up/pick up selection and more than anything, in the fingers and pick attack.

    Is it possible to get a convincing clean surf tone using a Joyo American Sound pedal through a Vox?

  • @fuzzyloomchannel

    @fuzzyloomchannel

    Жыл бұрын

    You can use the Joyo directly through the PA actually, since it has a cab simulator. Of course it's possible through a Vox. The Joyo simulates Fender amps from the Twin (voice at 1) to the deluxe (voice at 12 o clock) to some kind of Tweed amp (voice at max). I have done it and it's a cheap trick that works. I would use it at just around 1-4 on the voice knob. Just don't expect it to be exactly like the real deal. Try it!

I will just be playing at home and do not need to replicate the original surf sound, but need something clean and small. Also I was thinking of the Fender '57 Custom Champ 1x8" 5-watt Tube Combo Amp plus I was going to get the Fender 63’ Reissue Reverb Unit Brown Tolex to go with it. You can use humbuckers for surf. You can use just about anything as long as it's clean, and it never hurts to have spring reverb on tap. I personally use a 2014 SG standard, but it does have coil splits available.

  • @fuzzyloomchannel

    @fuzzyloomchannel

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, you can probably do metal on an acoustic. You can do whatever you want, but single coils are simply better for surf. Why would I use hot pickups wired in series for music that is supposed to be played very clean? Also getting a drip from humbuckers sounds very undefined and messy imho. This is my idea of the surf sound, based on what I've listened to and the artists I've talked to.

  • @fuzzyloomchannel

    @fuzzyloomchannel

    Жыл бұрын

    Coil split is better than just a humbucker, but it doesn't sound exactly like a single coil, tbh. The reverb is used as if it was an overdrive pedal. We want to drive it hard enough to give us the right amount of compression and fatness. The amp should be on the edge of breakup so the tubes give that nice and fat tone. This is why I don't see a humbuckers working in anybody's favor for this particular kind of tone. I'm not gonna try to change your mind, but I could never use humbuckers for surf. Believe me. I've tried. And yes, I'm a much bigger tone snob now than in my first video.

  • @ryankane7177

    @ryankane7177

    Жыл бұрын

    I feel like guitarists are too focused on gear for tone, as a substitute for practice. And I feel like this conversation is a good snapshot of that. If we are really talking to beginners here, we should let them know that all they need is a clean amp and some reverb and they can impress their friends with surf rock, as long as they put in the work to learning how to play it.

  • @fuzzyloomchannel

    @fuzzyloomchannel

  • @ryankane7177

    @ryankane7177

    Жыл бұрын

    @@fuzzyloomchannel I'm telling you that you're perpetuating the idea that you "need" to get certain gear in order to "get" a sound. I've played surf rock on a Soviet-bloc guitar, through a Soviet-bloc amp, and we all had a good time, except for my fingers. It worked. Most beginners have limited funds, and it doesn't matter the brand. It also really doesn't matter whether they're single coil, humbucker, mini, P-90, or acoustic. Nobody needs to go out and spend any money on any thing, as long as they have a stringed instrument that isn't physically impossible to play, a small amplifier, and the capability to put reverb on the signal chain is a plus. Of course ideally, surf rock is done on a boring guitar like a stratocaster, through an absolute gem of an amplifier like a Twin. If you disagree that the guitarist is the most important factor in this equation, well, we will just have to disagree. (I got mixed up with your video, because the other one I'm thinking of was explicitly pointed at novice players, and I thought we were talking about that subject, but my opinion stands)

    Taking the Lordś name in vain, the swearing ruins this video for me and probably a lot of other people. It is a shame because you seem to have some great knowledge.

    I've been playing guitar for 37 years and I can say that the classic surf tone can be replicated for around $120 and only with 2 pedals. I wont say which brands as Im not getting any money from anyone, but I will say play with the presence on the amp and tweak the highs. Then you just need a reverb pedal and a tremolo pedal. My distant cousin was Merle Travis and he played with all the greats and as every generation of my family is guitar players, the secret just gets pasted down. Dont forget, ebay is the place to be looking. 2 pedals sir. Also, your spring is way too dominant. Nice video though!

    I don't know what you are saying. It doesn't sound like you are a big fan of surf music though. You can use whatever you like, but it's not the same as the real deal. If you think so, then fine. Also this is my first video and I'll make a new one soon. All you need is single coils, a reverb unit in front of the amp and a clean amp with lots of Watts. That's the classic formula and the only pedal that comes close is the Surfybear Reverb, which is almost not a pedal.
