You have to work for free, but be sure to enjoy yourself and grow through the entire process. I've been releasing music production to KZread since April 2013. It took 4 years before I made any money off it and now it is my job and I'm on the incline. Weird thing is that I never once thought about giving up. I enjoy it too much. Same to you - enjoy your work!

I highly agree with your comment, I do think the job industry starting up is fucked for beginners/recent graduates (especially in some job markets like my own, Spain , I'd say) but I think Gary's on about another thing. I think he means that the value you get from serving coffee to JEFF BEZOS/JIMMY FALLON/etc (key part being the caps) is worth not earning money, I'd like to think he understands that the current job market is offering the same tasks but instead of bringing you value because you're getting literally closer to your goals they're just underpaying you for doing menial tasks for a nobody a rank above you.

Beyond offering to work for free to land a dream job, providing free value upfront opens the door of opportunity for getting new clients and customers as well. For example, if you're reaching out to a potential client, instead of just talking about the benefits of working with you, etc., you'll really impress them if you do your homework and present 2-3 valuable ideas to improve their business upfront. This helps businesses get over that hump of "ok, you seem to have the skills and experience but how will you actually be able to use them to help my business?"

Why do people always get things to literal? When someone says "Work for free" means you gotta work for the minimum wage thus working almost for free. You gotta learn to network, meet people, stay close to those who can provide knowledge and stay away from those that won't ADD anything towards your goals. Growing a business or achieving your dreams ain't an easy task. It requires time and a lot of sacrifice and sleepless nights and days. Keep pushing and do anything, GOOD, to make it :)

The housing thing is tough because often times renting is more expensive than owning even when it’s for a smaller space. I actually did sell my house back in Indiana and now rent in Ohio. While I do pay about $300 more a month to rent, the time required to maintain that house was insanely high compared to now having things taken care of by this apartment complex. Now I focus on my photo/video work more instead of water heaters and yard work. 👍🏼👍🏼 We all appreciate your words, Gary! 🙌🏼 Thank You 🙏🏼

7:28 I find this extremely interesting that you point that out 'cause I've been tutoring hockey players in high school and a college sports team for a while and those who were the most committed were usually those who REALLY wanted a place in the NHL or NFL or NBA or whatever it is. They sucked at school, but if they failed a course, they would bench for the rest of the semester (failing twice was a big no-no, both for the school and the team). They wouldn't wing it, they would work their ass off to get that passing grade and make it to the tournament. As a tutor, I'd much rather have these students than those A students who barely listen to you and just want the easy way to get an A+ instead. The grades (or results IRL) are important, but you likely won't achieve much without putting minimal effort into it.
