How to Get the Highest Rating for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

The highest possible rating for post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is 100%. A 100% rating means that a veteran’s PTSD symptoms are so severe that they are totally impaired and unable to function in daily life. VA assigns PTSD ratings based on the veteran's level of social and occupational impairment, as well as the frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms. Tune in to learn how to get a 100% VA rating for PTSD.

My c&p exam lasted 5 minutes. She asked me to tell her about the traumatic events you’ve had in your life, try to keep it under a minute and I don’t need much detail. I ended up with a 30% even though I had a civilian exam that filled out the DBQ and I qualified for 70%. These examiners from QTC medical are a joke. “Thank you for your service “ as they screw you over.

That’s 100% an inadequate C&P exam. I’d appeal that if you haven’t already.

@angryshrub1: I was rated 100% for PTSD/MDD/General Anxiety in 5/2017 (I filed a FDC and was awarded 100% in less than five months). When my three year review came up, an awesome QTC psych doc (via Zoom during COVID protocols) told me that he wasn't going to make me re-live my trauma and triggers. All he asked me was had my condition improved? (Uh, no), was I working? (No) and was in any kind of relationship? (No, again) It lasted about ten minutes. Within two weeks I was made 100% P&T/SMC-S (My other ratings are 30% Vertigo/30% IBS/10% Tinnitus). With QTC, it's hit or miss. Not all are bad or out to screw you over. Just my experience. Although, I hear "chatter" within VA ranks (current and former VSR's) that the days of getting 100% for a mental health rating are largely gone. I don't understand the criteria they are using now but they are definitely given more scrutiny. My personal take is that five to ten years ago veteran suicides and lack of access to care had spiked as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan winded down. The VA was handing out generous ratings to appease pressure from Congress. Nowadays, for any veteran to receive a 100% MH rating it is going to be a tough uphill battle. BTW, I sincerely thank you for your service. -Dave

@@daveb2280, I did get a 100% MH rating last year, but it definitely wasn’t an easy task, and it wasn’t on the first try either. I really feel like I deserve it though. Without medication, I’m a huge mess and suicide risk. The medications make life at least tolerable.

I was diagnosed with what we now call PTSD in 1971. It wasn't till 1999 that someone told me to file a claim. For years it was the VA's intention to always say NO even if they had to invent the reason. When they do say yes it's one step at a time, 30% first then you have to beg it up over years. I sent them proof I was 100% for PTSD and they still found a way to deny me based on a legal timing issue. the only symptom I never spoke of was my issue with personal hygiene, but they never noticed because I always cleaned up to go to the doctor. So I stopped and when I went in I stunk. The doctor couldn't help but notice and made a note of it. I am now unemployable permanent and total, based on how I smelled, they said no one would work with me. (Add that to your list of how to get the highest rating!)

Best thing to do during your exam is to tell the truth about all the stressors you have had starting out as a young person, through your military career or service period and even after your service. My exam lasted an hour and a half and I probably gave my examiner PTSD just from listening to all the stressors during my life, before, during and after military service. I pray for healing for all my brothers and sisters who have went through hell and back during their lifetimes and military service!! I am with you….always!!

I have a C&P exam with tomorrow with VES to review my PTSD rating. Been out for almost 10 years and last time I had one they tried to reduce my rating unjustifiably. Then I fought it and they said they would keep it where it’s at. I know people that are way better condition than me that have there P&T. I just pray I get the P&T so I can stop dealing with these people. But my gut tells me I’ll be calling you guys in a few days. Last time it was two days after my exam that they made their decision. It’s like they think I want to be this way. Might as well just off my self.

I have PTSD, no doubt about it. I was a witness to and subjected to brutal assault and other torturious methods while training in the military. The company was even court-martialed for abuse. The worse that came from this wasn't actually the abuse but the military taking away my opportunity to grow amongst a military career. I seriously believe if I had gone through a fair experience I would've not been injured and not sent out on medical and would've served my term, or even retired from the military in 2021.

QUESTION: I am 70% PTSD and hearing combined. Should I try to increase to 100% PTSD? I filed for sleep apnea and was denied because the DR said " "The sleep apnea was "probably because of service connected" So they denied me. So I am given the option of a SUPPLEMENTAL CLAIM OR HIGHER LEVEL REVIEW. So now I either have to take it to the next level or get another Dr top re-write it. What should I do?. Not sure what would be the best route for getting to 100% Thanks! I would really appreciate the help

Hello! VA may increase your rating in certain circumstances. However, veterans themselves also have a few options when seeking a higher disability rating. These can include: Filing an appeal within VA’s deadlines Filing a new claim for an increased rating Filing for TDIU, or total disability based on individual unemployability Filing for secondary service connection Here's the link to our blog on how to increase your VA claim: cck-law.com/veterans-law/how-do-i-increase-my-va-disability-rating/ Have a good day!
