How To Get The Best Coverage With Beeswax Furniture Polish (Gilboys Gold)

English antique furniture restorer Simon Gilboy explains how much coverage you can expect from a high quality beeswax polish. Pure gum spirits of turpentine is able to hold more wax in suspension than petrochemical solvents, so a high quality polish has a much higher wax content than cheap alternatives.

    I've used many waxes, and yours is the best and the easiest. It also smells wonderful. Matt blackboard paint, followed by button polish and then Rose Gold wax, results in the best ebonised finish, and is so easy to do.

    @@GilboysRestoration Excellent, the great thing about blackboard paint is that it's very thin and dries in 30 minutes. Even after two coats, the grain of the wood is clearly visible. The button polish and Rose Gold Wax ensure that it's not a true black, but has that old ebonised look. I use a mop to apply the two coats of the polish rather than a rubber as I didn't need to body up. I used this technique on an old oak cutlery canteen first and then a small set of drawers. I then refurbished a satinwood chest of drawers which was a very boring colour and blotchy. It doesn't look at all painted, and has been regarded favourably by all who've seen it. Maybe if you like the result you could film an example?

    HI Neil. Personally I would apply a few coats of our hard wax oil and then wax polish it. ✅ gilboys.co.uk/products/hard-wax-oil-food-safe-interior-wood-finish Also maybe take a look at our latest video. I think it will help you decide which finish you would like. 🙂 kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWeJtqOaf8eWqZc.html Kind regards Simon

    Love this transformation. How could I accomplish a matte look instead of the shine?

  • @GilboysRestoration

    @GilboysRestoration

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Amanda. It's a good question with a few answers: 1) If you are applying our wax polish to a dirty but previously shiny finish, it will not only revive the original finish but enhance it. As you can see by the results in this video. 2) However if you are applying it to a newly sealed surface that has a matt or satin finish it will leave a soft satin sheen. 3) If applied direct to bare unsealed wood it will leave a matt finish. 4) If you want to wax polish a perviously finished surface and don't want the shine then you can dull it by using the "0000' wire wool dry. Apply it to the surface with a little pressure (following the grain if possible) and it will take approximately 50% of the gloss out of it. The term in the French Polishers world is called 'Dulling' and there are many other ways of dulling but this is the easiest process. ( There's a demonstration of me doing this (43:17mins) on this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6R4yZuMaNewlaQ.html I recently finished a huge (also hugely expensive) bespoke made oak shoe rack using the (No.4) technique as the final finish. It leaves thousands of very very fine scratches on the surface creating a dulled finish that is pleasingly different from a liquid finish which has matting agents in it to create a more uniform matt finish. I hope that makes sense? Basically you can buy a matt liquid finish that uniformly dries to a given sheen, or you can create your own finish by mechanically scratching the surface in a controlled manner . Phew!

    @@GilboysRestoration thank you so much for your quick reply! Makes perfect sense. We have recently purchased a new Mennonite dining set in Ambrosia (wormy) maple and I'm hoping to keep it looking new for decades to come and see your products as a great way to accomplish this. I have yet to determine what type of top coat they've used (oil or water)... if that even matters when using your products, I'm not sure. I believe I would need your darkest colour as this was stained a med-dark greyish brown. Thanks!

    Thank you very much for the videos you share. I want to ask you, can I use a buffing / polishing machine or is prohibited?

  • @GilboysRestoration

    @GilboysRestoration

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Nikos. When you are buffing a natural wax, the aim is to flatten all the wax cells so the are flat to the surface. If you use a buffing wheel or similar machine too much heat will be generated, melting the wax causing it to smear. That's why we use an open weave cotton buffing cloth. (its good for your arms 😁)

    The piece of wood seems to be quite glossy before you applied the wax. Was the gloss achieved by previous waxing or because the wood was treated?

    Thanks for this: interesting and informative, as usual. I have a panel which I have French polished and then waxed, and I am now wondering if I was a little to sparing with the French polish. If I want to add more French polish, can I safely do this, over the wax, or, if not, what is the best way to proceed?

  • @GilboysRestoration

    Hi. Yes you can, if you just go over the surface first with dry '0000' steel wool to remove the wax polish. You don't have to be overly exact doing this. We have done this successfully, many times in the workshop. ✅

    Hi Akmal. I wouldn't recommend just using a beeswax polish to create a hardwearing glossy finish. If you are looking for a natural gloss finish then I would have it French Polished first.

    I have a very old Mahogany cabinet that I’m using your products to repair scratches/chips and polish. The face of the cabinet door has painting/picture on it. I am nervous the wool may harm this part of it. Should I just use the soft cloth? And...would the antique gold have any effect as far as fading/hiding the painting on it?
