I love that the tapes give that beefy sound of flats but still have a little bit of the heat of rounds.

If you want to use strings similar to those on a U-bass, you'd have to make sure they are a Polyurethane (or other composit) wrapped around a steel core. If there's no steel core, magnetic pickups of a standard bass-guitar won't amplify the strings. Most of the rubbery U-bass strings are straight Polyurethane, although there are some with steel wraps and steel-wrapped-steel-core varieties. If your bass-guitar has a piezo pickup installed, that actually will work with any type of string you use. Great video & thanks for the comparison!

i was so mesmerized by your dancing i had to go back and watch the blind test again LOL! the tone is very close, but the nylons definitely have that bouncy rubbery finish. i've got some in the mail, will see if i like them more than my chromes!

Great comparison! Always liked that tone, but didn’t like the feel of the stainless flatwound strings. I’ll have to try tapewounds to see if those feel better to me.

I used cobalt flatwound until I discovered tapewound. Now my Gretch and Hagstrom are both strung with tapewound and I love them.

I use the tapewounds on my fretless and love them. I have regular flat wounds on my Horner violin copy bass and now I may try them there as well

I like tape wounds better than flats, myself. They’re just warm, but a little livelier, and more flexy if you bend notes.

The flats have a pinch of clarity and the tapewounds are similar but a bit less clear. Still like the flats. Appreciate the demo and liked/subscribed. That’s a super bass too. Love to see this demo on a Hofner 500/1.

I have tried flatwounds and tapewounds on my Hofner Violin bass. The flats sounded great but my fingers did not slide so well on the strings. I switched to tapes and have found them to be the sweet spot between flats and rounds tone wise. My fingers slide much better on the tapes as well. In summary, if you’re looking for a tone somewhere between flats and rounds, give tapewounds a try.

Was waiting for the little slide on B that you did on A to determine the difference. Without hearing the slide I think A sounds more crisp and also deep at the same time.

I've used both flats my tapes on my German hofner. To me the tapes kind of make it feel like a toy and a bit cheap but the flats to me sound and feel more professional if that makes any sense

I wonder if stepping up the string gauge would solve that… Tapes have really low tension compared to rounds and especially flatwound strings, that could be why they feel cheap or flimsy

Used DR Black Beauties for years. Just switched to LaBella Tapewounds. Huge differences in sound and feel.

the rubber uke bass strings won't work. The pickups in a regular electric bass are magnetic meaning the strings have to have a steel wire core. Also, the rubber material works best with a string tension made for a shorter scale length. Longest scale length on a uke bass I believe is 28 inches

Hi mate, i have this same bass and flatwound strings on it. But it doesn’t sound anywhere near as muted as yours does with the regular flatwounds on it. Is there anything else you are using that makes it sound more muted? Thanks a lot brother

I recently got black nylon tapewounds but they look nothing like this, they have these little ridges which makes sliding kind of uncomfortable

What about halfwounds on JC bass?

The rubber ubass strings will only work with instruments that use piezo pickups. They won't work with an instrument with magnetic pickups.

They sound nearly the same. But I think the tape wound strings sound less metallic than the flat wound strings.

Do the tape-wound strings start life as a round wound with the nylon tape wrap added on top to the exterior of the string? If not, then what is the string type to which the tape is wrapped around?

Apparently so. Because there needs to me some sort of material that is magnetic to be able to get picked up by the pickup.

My statement about the tape wrapping a round wound was purely speculative, i.e., specifically the string material underneath the nylon wrap need not be a round wound string. It could be flat wound or just the iron core that is the foundation of any string that is part of the induction of current in any magnetic pickup equipped stringed instrument. I was hoping you knew what lie beneath the nylon tape wrap in terms of string construction. Your well-made comparative video gave me pause to consider the question.

They are roundwound strings on a hex core underneath a black plastic sheath. However the D'Addario website describes the ETB92's as "D'Addario Tapewound bass guitar strings are flat wound, silky smooth bass strings, expertly engineered to provide you with the full, percussive tone you're seeking." hence the confusion. The tape effectively makes them flatwound as it covers the ridges but the actual metal string is a normal roundwound. Best of both worlds, perhaps.

Tame Impala-Feels Like We Only Go Backwards

The strings on a Ukebass aren't magnetic, so wouldn't make a sound on your standard electric bass, unless you had a piezo bridge/pickup. I know what you mean though as you'd definitely achieve the sound you're after with them. Perhaps a Ukebass?

Also like the sponge trick...

I wish you had done this without a pick. It would sound so much better.

I really don't hear much of a difference at all. I think texture and comfort of playability is a better reason to chose between the two. not tone.

The tapewound are news and the others old...their sound will change becoming older...probably more deep and shorter sound

there are differences between brands too, some flatwounds are overly bright (fender), some have amazing mids (thomastik infeld), some have that addictive thud (LaBella, Ghs) and some are bright in a good way (LaBella stainless, Galli). And then there's the white nylon tape wounds ...you've got more work now 🤣

when making these sort of tone comparisons, it would be helpful to go into a bit more detail regarding your setup. show all the knobs of the active pedals and just drop a quick comment on the tone knob on your bass. nice video otherwise. keep up the good work!

Depende de para lo que sea y que clase de bajo tengas. Yo en mi short scale utilizo pyramids y la verdad es que son muy buenas cuerdas, aunque si que es cierto que la E pasa a ser muy percusiva y muerta pero eso pasa con todos los bajos short scale con flats.

Epiphone Jack Casady Signature in case you’re curious. Super versatile sounding bass. Jack Casady was the bass player for Jefferson Airplane back in the 60s, which is a bit of an odd choice in artist to do a signature model of but it’s awesome.

everybody but you, apparently.. It most definitely exists, though they didn't make them for very long.. It was a short-lived mid 70s Norlin era guitar & bass. I have a '74 goldtop Gibson Les Paul Signature. Then there's the newish, modern era Jack Cassidy bass, but it's really a LPS bass. Google it, you'll see. ;-)

I think a thin pick is a very important part of this sound. I talk about that in my first video. Cheers!

To me it sounds very similar to Palm muting. So I'll probably stick with normal round wounds and have the option to deaden.

This is not a comprehensive demonstration of what flats can do. Some people like their bass to sound as dead as possible, and this guy has obviously EQ'd for that effect, but flats can really sing. My personal favorite flats are Ernie Ball Cobalt. They're almost as growly as rounds, but feel nice and smooth under your fingers. Of course, you can get a warm, mellow sound out of them too.

Yeah, would've been nice if he sustained his notes and did some comparison without a pick, but still a decent video

Wish we could of heard both strings without the palm muting. Try incorporating different playing styles when demoing.

You can’t get that sound just plugged into a amp and nothing else unfortunately

for that minimum amount of tone difference, just e. q. and save some bread. I'm stuck on La Bella low tension flats on my Jack C, P, and J basses

You didn’t play the A and B comparison the same way, so it ruined my perception. You slid up to the first note on the tapewounds, so it sounded different

If you really want the vintage flat-wound sound, take Carol King's advise; never change the strings, and rub bacon grease on them.

As much as I like bacon, that sounds disgusting. Imagine that fat turning rancid🤢. Not to mention your whole fretboard and neck being greasy. People used mutes back then, and Carol Kaye played with a felt pick as well I believe.

Carol Kaye (LA session bassist) Pretty sure that was the same way with Motown bassist James Jamerson, intentionally keeping the same flats on his P-bass for as long as possible until maybe one of them would break or some other failure.

Let me finish my point that you pointed out was wrong, one word. Back in the late fifties and into the sixties flat wounds were the only game in town. They were the standard bass string because rounds had not been invented yet. This rubbery tone you speak of was achieved by a bass with flats plugged directly into a tube amp with no compression or other pedals to mess with the signal. Usually played finger style. Check out any James Jameson song he played on for Motown for the best examples of this.

Tape wounds are where it's at.

If you wanna get a classic 60's bass tone there is an important thing to keep in mind: almost all the british bands of that time used a short scale. Why? Because those were the basses they got on the island. You wanna get that kind of sound? This is how you do it: Short scale bass (humbucker) or a P bass for american bands sound (whatever will work), flat strings, ONLY neck pickup, foam/palm mute, playing with PICK, EQ pushing the lows and mids and pretty much killing the high end. Almost no sustain. Most of the bands even on the 70's used this kind of sound, but with the punk and stuff like the disco and popularity of funk at the 80's the bass did the opposite: the cool thing was having a Jazz with a clear high sound. I always like the classic sound better tbh

I get a similar sound by putting a sponge at the bridge..I don't like flats or tapes anyway because they aren't versatile enough for me

I prefer the flats instead of the tapes. They both sound very similar, but the tapes get stretched and tight a lot faster than the flats...they don't last as long, That little extra bite in the tone of the flats can be eq'd out if you want...but I prefer to leave it in. I also find the tapes a little tighter in general, not as comfortable to play.

Without drums it would be easier to compare. To my ears flatwounds sound like roundwounds with tones' knobs rolled off, while tapewounds are completely different beast. Their sound reminds me of a cello or a double bass, and I like that.

The sound is really cool but is not a Pink Floydish tone.

A few reasons. It helps you stay out of the guitar frequencies. The overtones, which sound great solo, can muddy up in a band context. Though this is sometimes also desirable Also there is very little string noise of fingers sliding up and down. I have a bass with rounds (in general I prefer the soundand use them for funk/metal) and a bass with flats which I use for blues and reggae.
