I’m new here started following last month. I am a spender, but I’ve done really well not spending so far this month. Went on a girls day/shopping trip yesterday and aside from lunch I only spent $3.14 and that was on sponges for the kitchen! So proud of myself.

I came to the realisation that I am going to do online sinking funds in my checking account and I’m going to cash stuff the saving challenges

I have been doing the envelope without cash over the years sense I first learned about it from my father and I have been on and off depending on where I am in life as far as income however it definitely has helped me stay a float so now I’m more consistent with it.

Appreciate the video! I've started the cash envelope system for certain expenses, and your mention of the cashless envelope tip was exactly what I needed.

I have adjusted my cash out for each envelope 3 times already. And now I am using a high yield savings account with many sub-accounts for sinking funds that I won't pull from often such as car maintenance.

I’m like you I’m not leaving money in my house you don’t know who’s watching the videos and you don’t know what’s happening out there is a lot of evil people. I do separate the money all out just since I started joining in. Normally I had just two accounts one for my bills and one for my household account and I had several savings accounts that I was saving for different things. Now it’s a little harder because I’m doing a lot more separating but it’s still OK. I need to learn where my money is going so probably in a way it’s better. I’m doing it. I’m like you the banks only three. Three or four blocks from my house so it’s not too far. It also keeps me from spending money. If I don’t have a lot of money right at my fingertips and I have to go to the house of going to the bank I don’t write checks I don’t have a credit card. I’m making it as difficult as possible to keep myself from spending too much money but that’s me. I don’t have a lot of willpower.

Absolutely, it's something that we definitely can do this. Some of my envelopes are cashless as well and track (like you do with gas).

I need to start doing this cause I spend all over the place and don’t even know how much I end up spending on groceries, cleaning supplies eating out and other unnecessary stuff. 🥵🥵🥵 I do save and keep in my safe box at home. Cause if I see it on my bank I most likely will spend it. I need a plan here lol. Thanks for this 🤗🤗🤗🤗

I love all the videos. But for ME, as I mark off my challenges, I put the money in a color plastic bank( so I can't see the money). After they're completed I open the bank and began counting.😊

I tried the cash envelope system. It did not work for me. I had too much cash on me, which was causing me to freak out. I now carry a little notebook that I add up my spending to make sure I stay under a certain amount.

Same here. I just do not think I would like it. I have thought about using prop money to better visualize, but I like using a card. Sometimes certain venues do not take cash, or it takes longer to use cash.

Where are you getting the pre marked envelopes from?

You are the first person I have come across on KZread who actually says that maybe the cash system may not be for me. Thank you! I have been struggling for 2 years to use the cash envelope system and haven't been able to make it work. I use a hybrid of cash & cashless by having a bank account exclusive for my "envelopes". This year I resolved to do away with most of my cash envelopes and go mostly cashless. Now I don't feel like such a dismal failure. Maybe cash envelopes aren't for me. The cashless envelopes seem to work out fine usually.

Do you do sums for the year and then divide monthly for cash envelopes?

Yes, do your budget first. Otherwise, you won't know where you're going; financially. I tried doing envelopes for cash stuffing but it got too overwhelming. So now I have only one envelope for increase in food expense come holiday time and a couple for savings challenges. It feels better to cut way down on the envelopes.

I withdraw cash and spend as needed but not in categories. Bay cc and hills from checking and keep balance in checking for expenses where cash cant he used.

The cash envelope method is not for me either but I noticed more and more that stores prefer cash or they will charge you extra for using debit. So I have some cash envelopes for takeout food or other small things.

Heeeyyyy! Happy 2024! I just want to jump in the conversation. I dont mind going to the bank but i dont want to go "back to the bank" so thats no for me. My high priority sinking funds are cashless but i like saving for car tag renewal in cash. If i only had cash envelope for my trouble spending area (eating out) that would work. The trouble im having is what to do when i am doing a shopping trip and getting things from all categories. I know one solution is go thru the receipt afterwards and fix the cash envelope but it would be interesting to hear what others do.

Well....I just have multiple transactions at the register. I know that people can get a little impatient sometimes (not often) but hey....If I am shopping at Target and I have both household items and toiletries, I separate the items on the belt and pay separately. It has worked for me.

For me if I go to Sam's/Costco and get groceries /household, then I will pull from the envelopes. Then that will allowed me to see if I need to adjust by budget.

I have 2 children it’s hard saving a penny Update: you do not need to be a bank to have a money counter. They sell them on Amazon.

19:35 let’s say a budget is set for $180 to go grocery shopping. $200 is spent and -20 is in the envelope. Would $20 be owed to the envelope? And if so, where would it come from? Another category that may be not as important as groceries such as nail care maybe?

This was good information. I have a question...is it important to be a month or so ahead in order to be able to stuff the envelopes based upon your paychecks?

Hello There! Yes, I would not pay any bills with a credit card....If you are not paying the credit card in full every month before the interest is applied, you are paying more that what the bill originally is. I hope that helps 💜

Where did you get the envelope that you just took the cash from? That’s a snap not the wallet

I’ve tried and tried to do cash envelopes to no avail. I started one time but end up taking money from different envelopes in certain situations, couldn’t remember which one it came from and it all became a big mess. I don’t tend to carry cash regularly. The bank is usually closed by time I get off so I can’t get the breakdown that I need and I don’t go back on Saturday. I’ll try again.

Envelopes don’t work for me. I have an excel worksheet that I can drop amounts into each column and keep totaled to track spending.
