How To Get Started Learning How To Draw Comics
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
If I had the benefit of knowing everything I know now, this is how I would start learning to draw comics. There's just so much to know and learn that it can be a daunting task to know just how to start, and all of the things you can ignore until you're ready for them. AND some things you can ignore entirely!

I always say this was the book that actually taught me how to draw. I read several art and anatomy books during my teenage years, with almost nothing gained from any of them. At the age of 19, I had kind of assumed that I wasn't going to progress any further in art (and trust me, you wouldn't even say my level was 'decent'). But a few years later I read How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way, and for the first time, something really clicked. This book really teaches you the fundamentals. None of my previous books did that. The next months after reading it, I improved faster than I had ever done. I remember feeling that, until that point, I had been 'drawing without knowing how to draw'.

That book is a masterpiece - not only for comics but even more so for animation and general illustration. It covers all the foundational stuff that's important.
Just bought this book at 54, but I got to give Mr Finch a huge thank you for sharing his tutorials, hands down the best info on KZread thank you David.

I bought this book when I was 17 in 1989. I'm 52 getting back to drawing after a long absence and this book is still very useful.
It’s always a great time to see an art tutorial from David finch. This helped a lot since I’m doing my own comic and it is pretty hard doing it all yourself.
Spot on! The gesture drawing bit is absolutely key and will trickle down through everything else you do.
I didn't finish the video as I am scripting right now, but if you see this David I just want to say thank you. With your videos and numerous nights spent until sunrise I still found a way to tell the stories I wanted to tell. I've come so far in so little time and have even exchanged conversations with Chuck Gibson. He even inked a short five page comic I did for some practice in sequential story-telling. I really do hope you see this so you can know for a certainty your videos are teaching people. I would not be where I am today without your videos. You've helped loads. Thank you.
David, your roadmap is pure gold and this video is perfect for anyone starting. Thanks!
I bought that book as soon as I heard you talk about it Dave and it’s helped me so much I wish I had it since I was a kid, as always Dave your an inspiration and can’t wait to see your art book
I feel like i have learned alot of useful stuff from visual storytelling from these videos. I always pay mind to planes that overlap eachother to create depth. I heard that somewhere else, but i think i'm starting to understand it. And now that i study David's or others work, i really enjoy seeing it in action.
Loved how to draw comics the marvel way since I was a kid stumbling upon it in a book store in the 70s. Many books have been published on how to draw comics but for the most part they pale in comparison . I’d also like to say thank you for being so generous with your talent and sharing your knowledge with everyone. This is probably the greatest KZread channel for learning and expanding your artistic knowledge. Your avengers books were on my pull list back in the day every visit to the comics store. Thanks again and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you and your channel!
Thank you David sir, for this video. I'm a beginner drawing student and wanted to become a comic book artist like you, so i watch your videos and guide on my drawing.
Thank you for doing this series, it will give me something to direct newer illustrators to and how to begin in a low stress way
I can’t even begin to express how big of an inspiration you are man. I come back every few years just to catch up almost like you’re an old friend. Just bought How to Draw Comics the Marvel way. I really hope to make it to your level some day.
Another majorly helpful video that I’ll be revisiting countless times! Looking forward to that next one. Thanks a lot for this Dave!
Thanks David once again that you're doing these Marvellous tutorial clips!
You're an inspiration for aspiring artists, and old timers like me, alike. Keep up the awesome work!
Also thanks! This gave me the confidence and insight on how to take on a huge project I’ve be been putting off.
I always wanted to draw comics too, so thank you all the comic book creators you all inspired me, including you
Thank you for your time in this video David, it surely has helped. God bless you and your family have a great day ya'll. 🇺🇸
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! i have been waiting for such a video!
Thank you for this tutorial. I've just bought this book not to long ago. It's helping bit by bit.
Thank you for your tutorials! I recently subscribed to your channel so I don't miss out on anything! I have been studying and practicing comic art since I was a teenager starting with this book by Stan Lee and John Buscema. I wanted to be a comic book artist but had no school near me that taught the subject. I took a different career path but I never totally abandoned my art and desire to create my own comic art. In my forties now, you are helping me grow as an artist and learn lessons I have desperately needed to achieve a lifelong dream. I have many books on this topic including Joe Kubert's correspondence course. I will keep learning and hopefully publish someday. Thank you for sharing your rich knowledge and experiences😎!
Thank you David, thank you for the best comic tutorials In KZread!
Thank you David please more videos like this, like your roadmap bootacmp!!!
Love this new series! Can’t wait for the videos to come!
You're my absolutely favourite artist to learn from David !
This is so amazing, thank you David!
Got how to draw comics the marvel way as a Christmas gift when I was 13. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving..
This is a great series and I'm glad you started these David
just so informational dave! exactly how i learned! getting back to the basics.
I have that "how to draw comics" book. It was helpful and i like the trailer you made for your book. Great work David!!!
Love that book , got it as a Christmas present as a kid, still got it today.
I'm a young artist, and have been studying this mans art for a few days. I love the way he draws anatomy.
This was more helpful than the half dozen anatomy courses I took focusing on the flayed man. Thank you 🙏
i can't believe it took me this long to find you! i love batman and you draw so beautifully. What an honor it is to be able to observe your techniques!
This video is brilliant! Thank-you, David!
Been giving myself a crash course on Loomis, Bridgman, Drawing comics the Marvel way and Michael Hampton. This video came at a perfect time!
Wow, great video, David! Very helpful.
Awesome video Dave! Best comic art teacher on KZread, no question!
This is amazing. I always have the article written by Dave that goes through how to develop comic draws skills close by, but this is a whole new level. Thanks Dave for this. Will happily pay for a full breakdown for continuation videos. Love the step by step. Thanks again!!! When does part 2 come out?
Great video! Just what I needed! I draw as a hobby and I really like it but, human anatomy and faces are complicated for me atm. Thanks for the inspiration!
Wonderful instruction as always. I think giving Tasks (draw just x for x days) is really helpful guideline for measuring expectations and making sure you aren't just rushing through to steps you aren't ready for.
Oddly enough, I've been looking for inspiration to get back into drawing again and started working through this book a few days ago. And then I saw this show up in my feed and the name of the channel and felt like there might have been a glitch in the Matrix.
Thank you Dave your videos help so much.
I've read your "Roadmap for Comic Book Artists" and Im currently working my way through my first run of Bridgman as suggested. Can't wait for the next video that goes into detail on how to approach it, and I hope there are some tips on learning to construct dynamic figures from imagination
great video! I hope you will show a lot more of the next steps. The STARTER foundational steps is a great theme and you should do a LOT more of this kind of vids. 😃👍
It's one thing to do the exercises in the book. It's a whole other world to see a pro apply them in front of you. Makes so much more sense. Thanks Dave ✊🏼👍🏼🙏🏼
I am glad a came upon your channel David. I have taken some community college courses, online courses, I've read books and joined subscription services for learning how to draw, and though I have taken good information from each, your channel has improved my process and has helped me concentrate on what's important as a beginner. Thank you so much for this! Any chance you will put out a "How to draw feet" video? I don't see one in the library.
I love this book. I even had the VHS.
Thank you very much for this video, this information is very helpful for someone who’d like to illustrate comics someday.
For me Dave you are one of the greats up there with Jim Lee, Tod, Frank, I love your two page speads man they are awesome!!!!!
Great tutorial as always! Fantastic break down, and focal points.
Thank you for your efforts, sir. We learnt a lot from this 🎉
I have the book in hardcover, bought it back when it came out! 😎 I studied it for hours and hours.
Thank you for this video!!
Excellent lesson! Thank you.
Genio !! Una gran tutorial , que a través de referencias de cómic, puedes lograr las poses más difíciles, es lo que estaba buscando !! Además me suscribire !! Gracias Maestro !
Thank you for being left handed. So much easier to follow.
Simply the best 'how to draw' book I've ever come across & I'm not a 'comic's guy'. I tell anybody I know - who wants to learn, to get this. Combine it with Life Drawing classes & within a year you'll be a powerful draughtsman (if you do your homework!)
When i needed answer he uploads..I think its a sign for me to keep up
this is a must book for budding comic book artist! i still have mine to this day from 1988, very worn as it should be.
I just bought that book from a comic n stuff comic book store. I will use your tips Dave. Thanks!
I can attest I purchased that book back in 1990 as a kid and it taught me how to draw
am working on my first book and this was very helpful

What an incredibly helpful tutorial. God I wish I had these when I started as a youngster!!
Incredible work. Im aware of alot of the work but didnt know it was from him.
David could you maybe do a forearm anatomy study for us? The forearms seem to be the most complex part that needs to be right.
David The Great! Thanks
Great tutorial! Thank you!
i literally just started making a comic and then this video came out. that's some great timing.
Thank you David !!! 👌👍
Hey Dave! I love your videos, I've learned so much cartooning and basic drawings skills from your channel and having you as a free resource is absolutely incredible. I would love to see a video on dynamic environments/"camera angles" your perspective videos are excellent and I've learned a lot, but my environments always end up looking p stale or my "camera shots" are not very compositionally interesting. Any advice on this would help a ton. Thank you again
Wow this was my most favorite book as a kid, wish I still had it!
Thanks, Dave!
I have this book and you are my fav artist! This video is the shiznit!
I had this book! It actually helps a lot
Thank you for this video.
This really help me a lot.
I’m fiftyellum years old and when I saw the thumbnail I turned into a kid again. 😂. This book was life.
Thank you you have helped me so much

Great video! I had that book years ago (not sure if it's still here) I'll have to use your suggestions though. Thanks again!
It's good for start my friend
Can't wait to see next video where you show how to approach Bridgman!
This is super helpful
Funny seeing this cover. I know I have this book. A few years ago I was at my parents house combing through some old boxes. I asked if they saw a super hero "how to draw" book. They had no idea what I was talking about. I know I have this book. I have to find it!! Looks like it was first published in 1978, (I would have been 9 at that time). I am not sure how long this was being sold, but I hope I can find it just for the fun of it. Great video....as always....thank you David!
Good choice for a book cover!!👍👍
This is wonderful thanks!
Ha! Bought that book as a kid. Wish I still had it
The video we all needed.
The absolute best book to get you started.
So I started to draw Forever Evil #1 Director's cut which is David Finch's amazing pencil work and with the first two panels it was a complete eye opener (pun intended) and I started to realize David's navigation on how to study a figure and how to use the rule of thirds to emphasize where to draw the reader's eye and how shading can make that figure even more dynamic. Check out his sketch of Wolverine being beheaded by ninjas. What is even more thrilling is that Finch never stops studying even more dynamic shapes, poses, shading, and even paint and airbrush. He is essentially one of the greatest not only comic artists but expressive artists in my opinion in my lifetime. I suggest checking out the new kickstarter
I found this book in a discount store about seven years ago. It completely changed my technique. I'm in no way an accomplished professional, but it gave me so much pleasure in manifesting my visualisation of things. I also went down the road of anatomy books, because I find it interesting, although I get that it's a hinderance to many. It's just my nature. I've tried to go pro and got to semi-finals in British comics, but the effort nearly ruined me. Just experiencing the path was enough to form greater appreciation for those that do this work on a daily basis. But getting back to "forms" - Hulk breaks every rule and to this day is a challenge for me. He's also a favourite character because of that. Wonderful content, David, thank you 🙏
Another David big W
