How to Get Rid of Your Sleeves
Ойын-сауық
Kimono sleeves are very long for fashion and to be as pockets, but they do get in your way sometimes.
That’s why Japanese people used to do Tasukigaké, using these strings to tie up their sleeves.
Let me teach you how to do this.
You first hold one end in your mouth.
You bring the string under your arm and behind your back.
The string goes over your other shoulder, under the other arm, and behind your back again.
At this point, there should be an X on your back.
Tie the two ends of the string together and move the knot to the back.
Once you get used to it, it only takes about 10 seconds to do this.

It's a beautiful detail animated in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. Didn't have to be animated, they could have designed the character costume to not need this, but animators attention to detail and cultural sensitivity absolutely makes that movie.

The director sent much of his staff on several trips to connect with their traditional culture. Since he was an older Japanese guy, he got furious that his younger Japanese staff couldn't get the details right and had them do several revisions.

I saw an INCREDIBLE stage adaptation of spirited away in the London coliseum two days ago and they included this detail! You can actually see Chihiro tie it up and she did it so quickly! It was really cool that they included so many little details
It's funny because these can be compared to western trouser braces too keep your trousers up and prevent them from sagging but also keeps the usually quite loose fitted shirts back then more in control.

@@GTchumno, not belts. Trouser braces. They can also be called suspenders, each term is more common in different countries.
@MediocreNed

These are a lot more closer to sleeve garters than suspenders. You know the barber shop quartet sleeve straps. They were used during the latter half of the 1800s because the mass produced shirts were made in only one size, too long. It was easier for the factories to make it that way. What you did was stuff all the slacked sleeve above the garter so the cuff the sleeve would be in the right place. Sleeve garters died off once mass produced clothing started to be made in different sizes making them obsolete.

I like how simple it is to apply.
Sleeves as pockets, very genius.
It explains where Mai Shiranui's back ropes come from while simultaneously makes it an ironic character design quirk since her outfit has no sleeves

More specifically, I believe that’s a tasuki made of shimenawa. Shimenawa are ropes are used in Shintoism to adorn sacred trees, temples, etc. They are also traditionally worn by yokozuna (grand champion sumo wrestlers), though those are worn around the waist, since it actually has to be functional-characters wearing it in a big bow on their back just makes for a more dramatic design I think, and was probably easier to visually parse back in the days when we didn’t have super advanced graphics in arcade games haha!
he becomes a minecraft villager for a second
our women in morocco do the same thing when doing chores etc!!! lit the same technique and it’s still used to this day by women in the traditional way, but it ALSO evolved to an accessory and women nowadays wear chunky gold chains in the shape of this X around shoulders and back !
Yes! I love the look tasukis give to kimonos! I learned it from Chihayafuru, people use it to hold their sleeves in Karuta matches! It makes the look so cool while keeping the elegance!❤
I've seen this before, but never knew it was a normal practice.
Me as a kid watching chihiro do this and go :o! oh the sleeves!
Beyond keeping sleeves up, it also straightens posture, holds the shoulders back, and somewhat eases the back pain I get when leaning over a sink.
I’m very glad you uploaded a video on this. As many people here have said I’ve heard of this and only found maybe 1 or 2 tutorials for this technique but only on fully Japanese websites or with Japanese text descriptions. Very wonderful to see you show more people this common and yet hard to find techniques!

So that's what it's called! I knew there had to be a name for them. I see them used all the time when watching things like woodworkers working on carvings and such.
Right! I remember seeing this in Spirited away 😮😃 I originaly thought that Chihiro improvised that on spot. I didn't know this was actualy a thing (althought it makes perfect sense) 😅
Suspenders for sleeves, neat!
Their version of tying your hair up before a fight 😂
Thats a beautiful pink kimono. Very nice
I never knew that and I've seen it in anime or movies so many times, this is top tier info 😮
That's interesting! Thanks for sharing that part of your culture Shogo.
This was demonstrated in Spirited away too!
I didn't know Kimono sleeves were used as pockets, sounds like a handy design
That color looks so nice on you! Great video as always!
Great video! Always wanted to know this.
I love your mural!
I remember watching this in Seven Samurai and a few other classic movies.
Wow that's an extremely versatile method, I absolutely love it!
I was literally just thinking about how they did this earlier today 😂 forgot to look it up and now I'm here
HAI! this is something, i always saw in japanese samurai movies. thank you.
thanks! this will help for my Yoimiya cosplay!🎇
Since I didn't train in a hakama gi I never knew that that was one string, I always assumed it was two strings and they were used to help hold our ninjato in place.
Nice to see again Mr. Shogo.😊
thanks shogo!
I was given a cotton kimono that I love wearing and saw this described somewhere. It took the kimono from something comfortable to lounge in to a garment I can wear all day for all activities, if I want.
Very interesting tutorial about why they had such a tie knot around their back. I see that almost everywhere, even from samurai.
Ooooooh nice hair shogo I like that new style 👍🏻
now it makes more sense how that specific character saves their drink in the pocket sleeve
Oh hey, I did it right, my first try this past weekend! 😅✌️
I've only seen tasuki-gake in an anime, but now I know how to do it for real 😂👍.
Didnt even know it was pockets, thats sick!
when we are in kyoto soon - we hope to find some one to take a tour with as enlightening and fun as you appear to be!
I use this technique to tie back my kaftan sleeves ❤ I first saw it in Manga and thought it was super clever.
I've been wondering about this for like, the last month! Now I know how it is called! I've been watching matcha samurai and he always struggles with his long sleeves when he's cooking, and I didn't know the word for this to tell him 😅
Awesome the kimono reminds me of the Irish léine as it also has large sleeves ❤
Such a rad tip!
Holding something in your mouth is the last thing I would expect the Japanese people to come up with.

Useful tips.
I dont know why men doing this so effortlessly can look so attractive. Like a dance
Okay so... I need some ribbon like that. I have several big sleeves tops that I cannot manage cooking while wearing. Until now.
It seems nice to put things in, like a backpack, I prefer a tighter backpack. I recently used the Roycroft backpack for two days, once for 7 km with 10 kg, and once just on the way back, 3.5 with about 7-10 kg (I didn't weigh it, or if I did I forgot), it was more comfortable than a normal backpack, I was very surprised. At first it seemed like it was going to hurt, in the end it was much better than the one I use most.
Very nice.
So cool
People who watch a lot of samurai TV and movies know this haha!
I learned this from Beat Takeshi's 2003 "Zatoichi". Tadanobu Asano was who ised it and I practiced it.

OH SO THAT'S WHAT THAT IS!
I can see why Japanese peopl adopted western clothes so quickly.
The red theads on your tasuki-gaké make it look like a snake! 😃
I like that the string have a smaller red string at the end so it looks like a snake with its tongue out
During my Iai training years I taught myself to do this one handed watching Tadanobu Asano do this in the 2003 Zatoichi remake with Beat Takeshi 😂
Oh, I think I saw this on some shogun 2 units. Usually, the levy units in fall of the samurai
does it allow to keep what you put into the pocket or not? I'm curious to know and wanna use it for cooking. I mean cooking with kimono is hard for me.
I always wondered how Chihiro did it in Spirited away😊
This is also done in Spirit Away.
Ohh, I always wondered what that does.
I saw you last time in japan
Few more videos and when I'm done building my time machine I'll be able to survive in middle age Japan.
I saw a guy doing this in osaka, very nice and I got real confused 😅
I used them several times already to your up the sleeves if my "kosode".
And that's how Shibari was born
Idiocy from 400 years ago feels refreshing nowadays.
Got it Now i just need a katana
I used the sleeves to stor my stuff and I didn't know it was actually meant for that, I thought I was gping to jail for it 😂
That explains it. I think I've seen them in Kerosawa movies. (Sorry for the misspelling)
I wondered what those were for.
COOL
This is how adventurers can say they're fu**ed when they see Mio Misume doing this
I once read this story about two samurai who were about to duel. As they were tying their sleeves back, one of the samurai was basically like 'screw this, I'm not fighting that guy' because of how quickly he tied his sleeves. Anyone else ever heard that? True or no?
We all have learned how to do it in Spirited Away.
Apprentice: We could just make smaller sleeves. Master: Get out. You'll never be a tailor.
The end is the Japanese equivalent to Americans on their first day of elementary school looking at their parents before getting on the bus
"Couldn't you just roll them up and tie them by your wrist-" *smeck* "Ow..."

I learned this from Chihiro in Spirited Away.
I have seen this in the wano kuni arc
